Introducing DIY LOVEBOT
You may have seen Lovebot street art around the city of Toronto and now we're ready to bring Lovebot to the world in a new toy form.
The DIY Lovebot is a 5 inch customizable designer art toy that allows you to express your creativity in a completely unique format.
You can customize Lovebot! Or you can leave Lovebot in it’s original form.
Love comes in many forms…what will you create?
Why support this Kickstarter project?
Matthew Del Degan and Mindzai share a common interest in making the world a better place.
Mindzai's mission is to give back to the creative community and provide platforms and opportunities to creatives through it's workshops and art shows.
Matthew Del Degans mission is to remind people that we are all part of a community, and in turn, spread love and kindness to our neighbours, friends, family, co-workers, and fellow citizens.
The two mission statements combined provide a simple and powerful combination. Creativity x Kindness
For us, this isn't just another toy, it's a spark of a loving and inspiring movement of people creating and sharing positive energy!
We're here on Kickstarter because we want you to join the Love Invasion alongside us in our mission to share creativity and kindness. Contribute to the Love Invasion movement! Make a Love Robot!
Lets get Lovebot into the hands of the people globally. We need your help to create an affordable Lovebot for everyone to enjoy!
Until now, Matthew Del Degan has spent years perfecting Lovebots design. We have lined up our all of our vendors to help produce and distribute the DIY Lovebot toy. We need your pledges to help with the funding of the tooling and production costs for the moulds required to make the toy.
Additionally, with your pledge funds, we will be able to provide free DIY Lovebot workshops for kids and adults to foster their creativity and kindness. If we reach our funding goals, we'll be able to rent venue space, provide free paint and art supplies, hire professional artist guides and provide professional photography for all!
And one more thing.... Everyone who pledges to our campaign will see their name on a hero heart as street art pasted up on the streets to show their love and support of a positive cause.
Join the Love Invasion movement!
*all DIY Lovebot and Gold Lovebot images are currently 3D Renders.
Each additional DIY Lovebot - $30 Each additional paper craft toy - $5
Each additional sticker pack - $15 Each additional T-shirt - $30
Want an add on? Simply add the amount to your existing pledge.
For example, lets say you wanted the early bird for $35 but you wanted two additional Lovebot toys. You would simply add $60 your pledge for a total of $95.
At the end of the funding campaign, we will send out surveys to all our backers to grab additional info on size of T-shirts, confirmations on the # of toys, address info and more.
After the campaign is completed we will send out surveys to everyone to collect more information.
NEW LOVEBOT ARTIST CUSTOM SERIES
We started the campaign with both Skam and CyCy Berlin on board. Then we brought on Carson Catlin. Now we're proud to announce our latest roster of amazing artists from around the world that have signed on and agreed to customize the LOVEBOT.
The customs range from $250 - $300 and are limited edition hand crafted customs.
The customs will be created on the final production toy so backers who pledge for one of these will get their final unit sometime in January or February of 2015 as it takes some time to get the units to the artists and of course the time to customize.

NOTE: For backers that change their pledge but still want to retain some of the benefits from a different pledge, you can add on the amount of the previous pledge to the new pledge and we will take care of the rest. For example, Lets say you had already backed $100 for the Heart of Gold Pledge but also want the custom by Jon Paul Kaiser. You would select the JPK pledge and then add $100 to your pledge for a total of $400. Message us about your switch and I will take care of the rest and make sure you also get a gold unit. It's silly...but that's how Kickstarter works.
DIY Lovebot is a Sandbox Society x Mindzai Labs collaboration art toy project.
Matthew Del Degan has a dream of sharing love all over the world. Lovebot has been his symbol of love and is just one example of how he brings wonder and magic into this world. Today, Lovebot is well known in Toronto, but for him, his city is just the beginning. Matthew works day and night to share love and kindness globally. Lovebot is becoming a globally recognized symbol of Love and Kindness that's soon to be customized by the people for the people to share. The world needs love. There's no doubt about that and just like the Lovebot, Matthew will design more tools to share Love and Kindness. Lovebot is the beginning to the Love Invasion movement.
Mindzai Labs is the creation of founder, Chris Tsang. Mindzai is a company whose objective is to give back to the creative community. Mindzai.com, is a worldwide retailer in designer toys and creative goods. Mindzai Labs is the design and manufacturing arm for the company whose purpose is to help creatives around the world make their product dreams come true.
The Inspiration - How it began
The Lovebot was created 5 years ago by Matthew Del Degan as a young Industrial Designer. At the time, Matthew was having a blast, talking and laughing hysterically with a man on the bus whom he assumed was homeless. When the man left the bus Matthew noticed that the rest of the bus was full of silent people ignoring each other like robots. He thought to himself “We are not faceless robots, we are people with big hearts who share the ability to love one another!” That night Matthew sculpted Lovebot out of clay. After presenting his toy to his class he handed his only toy prototype to a young girl who was walking down a busy city street, she held the little robot close and said enthusiastically “Can I keep it?” He said yes and from that day forwards, Matthew has spent nearly every day working on Lovebot. In the beginning he put up stickers in his city and sent them around the world. Matthew would ask people to do kind things through email, and if they did, he would read the stories of what loving act they had performed before sending them a few Lovebot stickers in the mail. Stories of love and kindness have flooded his e-mails from all over the world for years. This was his proof that he, through his character Lovebot, was in fact making the world a better place.
Following this, with the help of over 20 volunteers, best friends, and family, Matthew created concrete Lovebot sculptures to place around Toronto. Each 250 lb concrete Lovebot sculpture is numbered and dedicated to a story of love and kindness that transpired in the city of Toronto. This method of illuminating the Love in a big city lit up the media. Even now, with the exposure, Matthew continues his daily mission to share love and kindness around the world through Lovebot. Alongside him is his team of Lovebot Leaders, a group of incredible, kind hearted people who work together to add positive energy into the world.
Mindzai, created by Chris Tsang, has always been a huge advocate of Do It Yourself designer toys because it allowed people to express themselves in a unique way. More importantly, customizing toys is super fun and an opportunity for people to design on a canvas that isn't flat is incredible! Mindzai has been hosting DIY Toy Workshops at their retail shop and at various communities in Ontario for 3 years.
When the two met in 2013, it was clear that both were on a path to rock Toronto's designer toy scene. The two teams started on small retail projects like the release of the Lovebot keychain, stickers and the Lovebot key. Both teams knew that if they teamed up on a project, it would be epic.
Together, they've joined forces to create the DIY Lovebot, a designer art toy that not only spreads kindness but also encourages people to use their creative skills. Create your own monument of love using markers, pens, paints, or whatever else your heart tells you to.
Early Prototypes and Sketches
The DIY Lovebot stands at 5 inches tall and is made of an phthalate free PVC vinyl specially made for customization. The arms, torso, legs and heart are all separate pieces making each flat surface and easy to design canvas with paint, markers and more! In addition, the pieces are easily posable so you can display your Lovebot however you want!
Our die cut vinyl stickers are made from the highest quality vinyl manufactured by our good friends at Sticker Robot.
The print is a 8" x 10" size and is printed on a beautiful 280 GSM Verona Rag acid free paper.
LASTLY! EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTS THIS PROJECT WILL SEE THEIR NAME ON A LOVEBOT "HERO HEART" PASTED UP SOMEWHERE PUBLICLY!
Risks and challenges
We've been preparing for this for quite some time now. We have had a lot of experience making resin and concrete moulds so it was a relatively transition to design and create our original mould for mass production.
This is also our second Kickstarter campaign. We have experience in dealing with customer experience, accountability and communication with all of our backers.
There are some risks and challenges that might come our way when we start our second large scale production of DIY Lovebot and we want to be upfront about it. Our backers are investing in us, in art and in the designers and so we want to do everything we can to minimize the risks involved.
Our partners are in Canada, China and the USA for manufacturing all of the goods offered. We have finalized our molds and 3D renderings and have already been collaborating with all our factories and suppliers for the past couple of months.
That being said, shipping delays, customs, weather and other unknown issues can creep into production times and cause a delay. We will do our very best to deliver all goods expediently once we have them in hand.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
