Update: UNLOCKED FIRST STRETCH GOAL!
AER HEAD will now have a professional letterer! AWESOME!! So thankful to have gotten this far! Now, revealing our next stretch goal: If we reach $3,600 I can hire a flatter for the first stage of coloring. It's quite a stretch, but hey, reach for the stars!
I am creating a 52-page, hand drawn, full color comic for this passion project that I’ve been cooking up for over a decade. For some years it’s been on the back burner or marinating in the fridge, but for the past 2 years it’s been on the front burner on HIGH! I chose a page length that's more than DOUBLE the size of a regular issued comic because I love in-depth character exposition. As issue #1 of a series, many characters are introduced, from endearing hippie surfers to aerospace grad students at the end of their rope.
Aereo Zephyr, nicknamed Aer, is a teen surfer and lifeguard who struggles to control his ESP. He sometimes sees the future in his dreams, but he senses there's a missing piece to unlock his power's potential. One night he predicts a wave of flame will careen towards Earth, and his lifeguard instincts kick in. Can he save the people of New San Diego, and Earth, in time?!
I can’t wait for others to read this comic and be inspired just like how manga and anime inspired me (especially as a teen). Some of my favorite series (Space Dandy, Cowboy Bebop) have had healthy doses of comedy & sci-fi and AER HEAD delivers on both! Manga & anime fans (Ranma ½) and classic comic fans (Archie) will rave over this X-Men meets Blue Crush epic. YOU can make AER HEAD #1 a reality by supporting this Kickstarter.
WHY Am I Creating AER HEAD?
Each character represents different parts of myself, people in my life, or qualities I admire. The character's personal situations, hopes, and fears are close to my own. I'm a light sleeper so I remember my dreams. I'm a planner so I always want to know the future. I've only surfed once but it's a fun theme!
I also realize that, even though I have many ideas for stories, my time is limited and I can't create all of them at once. If given the choice to pick JUST ONE awesome story to completely put all my energies into, even if it's the only series I complete in my life, I choose AER HEAD!
The following is an excerpt from the MIDDLE of the book. This is a fully rendered page with traditional watercolor backgrounds. This will be the whole style of the book.
This next page has some shading and a few gradients and water shine.
This page has some flat colors.

We did it! Many thanks to all my backers who have helped me reach my first goal of $2,000 and first stretch goal of $2,800! My next stretch goal is to hire a letterer if we reach $3,600. This will save even more time (possibly another month cut from production time!)
Currently I have 32 out of 50 pages drawn (last 2 pages are for the Thank Yous and some other tidbits), so it's over half but not quite 3/4 yet (as of this posting). I have all the writing and layouts done. Only 18 more pages to draw! Drawing is the most time-consuming, but inking is a breeze compared to that. My colors are half digital and half traditional watercolor (backgrounds) so that takes awhile.
The current timeline is what I estimate if I'm completing the whole project by myself, but if we surpass my current Kickstarter goal, I have some stretch goals that will aid in speedier production. These months represent DUE DATES I've aimed for. So January 2020 represents when I'll be finished with the drawings & so on. I estimate that I'll have AER HEAD #1 in your hands by the end of 2020.
This pie chart reflects me crunching numbers in Excel many times! I made sure to calculate the shipping carefully - international shipping is always complicated and I've prepared for that. In the largest golden chunk of 34%: Kickstarter + processing fees are 10%, Income tax + state taxes are 27%, and I gave a buffer of 15%.
Risks and challenges
I am a freelance artist full time: I’ve worked as a colorist, sketch artist, and have worked in other niches within the industry long enough to handle deadlines (since 2010). As a freelancer I still need to pay my rent & bills, as this Kickstarter is mainly for printing of the books. I still need to honor work for various clients and may need to pick up more work, which may influence completion of the project and/or fulfillment. But I have the business acumen and organizational skills to deliver on this project. You can see by my Patreon updates that I've made steady progress on AER HEAD over the past year (you don't even need to be a patron - just look at the dates I posted).Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
