October Update

Hey Backers!

This update covers the progress we made over the last two months. In addition to the hardware, we’ll be sharing some updates on the software we’ve been working on, including a few really interesting applications that we haven’t yet shared publicly.

You can check out the update on our blog. Enjoy!

We’ve fixed the cabling, Bluetooth, and PCB layout, ANC, and button problems we mentioned in our last update. We’ve also commissioned our first tooling, a huge milestone! We’re considering making the armbands out of plastic – please read below and voice your opinion in the comments.

Our timeline is to finish tooling by early January, finish DV by February/march, and start ship soon after.

Below we describe the software interface, and announce our neuro-adaptive music system: a dramatic innovation in focus music. We also have several questions we’d like feedback on, so please comment with your responses!

We'd like your feedback on a few questions, to help us develop our app! Please read the update for more details, and comment your thoughts on our blog.

   1. What music tracks help you focus, so we can use them as a reference?

   2. What metrics would you want to track on a session-to-session, day-to-day, and week-to-week basis, to motivate you to do more deep work?

   3. What tool integrations (to do list, calendar, notes, email) would help motivate you to do more deep work?

That’s all folks! Check out our update on our blog, and please comment your answers to our questions!

As always, lots of love,

- The Mindset Team

      Music to code by.
Gladiator and Kingdom of heaven soundtrack

         2. What metrics would you want to track on a session-to-session, day-to-day, and week-to-week basis, to motivate you to do more deep work?

         3. What tool integrations (to do list, calendar, notes, email) would help motivate you to do more deep work?

      Fitbit
      Sleep as android
      Android calendar (+digical, +nine folders)
      Outlook on windows
Meditation apps like calm, fitbit coach, tide

Pretty late to the party answering your questions but I thought I'd throw mine in too anyway.

      1. Mogwai, Russian Circles, God is an Astronaut, and any similar post-rock bands I find best to focus.

      2. I like to measure how long a focused session I can manage. I try and do pomodoro and find 25 mins of total concentration hard. so if I can see that I'm at least increasing my session length that'd be great.

      3. I use trello to store all my tasks in and have a rule that I don't turn my computer on unless I have a card lined up in trello to work on for 25 mins (otherwise I'll drift into blogs and facebook and all sorts) I have an app called pomello that lets me log a pomodoro session to the current trello card. and I also use 1focus on my mac to make sure I can't open up any sites or apps while I'm working. It might be handy to see what I was doing for a focused session. My brain might be focused but it might be on the wrong thing :)

No plastic, thanks to help us save the planet. Or maybe use some plastics from oceans !
I would like a perfect fit for buttons to control my spotify app and get a call from my phone app, thanks. Without these, I would consider that the headphones couldn't compete with others.
      1) I prefer chill music without a lot of voices or some lyrical voices. Maybe some pianos too. I like specially some chill playlists from Spotify.
      2) I really don't know.
      3) My prefered app at this moments is Tasks from google. If there is a link with this app, it would be great but I dont know if it's pertinent with a music app. Do you have some UI to show us ?
Appart of this, I hope it will be a great piece of work and I think you put a lot in it.

Thanks for your feedback everyone! I've amalgamated your comments into a doc I'm sharing with the dev teams, so they can use it to motivate their decisions - if they have any followup questions, we'll reach out individually.

      1. What music tracks help you focus, so we can use them as a reference?
All sorts yet for reference: Moonlight sonata (Beethoven), While my guitar gently wheeps (Beatles), Soundtrack from Hair (the musical), Paranoid (Black Sabbath), Karma Police (Radiohead), Mystical Machine Gun (Kula Shaker)

      2. What metrics would you want to track on a session-to-session, day-to-day, and week-to-week basis, to motivate you to do more deep work?
Since delivery is overdue, start with a dump of basic measurement from all sensors on a timeline. Correlation to music/sound can be refined later and will depend on user feedback once there is a solid installed base. Create that base first with a solid, tangible product. For the software, stick to a healthy most viable product (MVP) and build further on that over time.

      3. What tool integrations (to do list, calendar, notes, email) would help motivate you to do more deep work?
Doesn't sound like part of an MVP. I mostlyt use gmail and outlook on windows.

      1. Aluminum is nicer. I hope the headphones work also well for those who wear eyeglasses and do not leave any pain while using it .
      2. I use classical music

I would be interested how stiff the aluminium version is compared to a plastic version. Since the size of the headphones should fit all heads I'm a bit concerned the clamping pressure could be a bit to high with aluminium since that's most of the time a problem I have with headphones. If there's no big difference between plastic and aluminium I also would prefer the later.

As for the timeline, I really hope that Chinese New Year in 2019 doesn't set back the timeline once again. I can't wait to get my headphones and start working with them.

Far bigger issues for comfort than weight shavings, cost savings.

Over ear is much more comfortable than on ear. The first thing to hurt is your ears. Second is clamping pressure. Weight isn't an issue when you consider things like helmets athletes and military wear for hours... So the head shape of the armbands, clamping pressure, ear cup shape, ear cup cushion, ear cup fabric, etc are much more important.

Do not plastic my armbands unless you are trying to customize its shape for each individual head which would be crazy expensive for all the molds! That would be the only reason to do so.

You aren't going to be wearing these for longer than the battery lasts...

Could have made this much more easy to accomplish project by making them wired headphones with external powerbank or something if power was needed. Wireless/battery could have came later with version 2 or upgraded model. Wireless and especially Battery technology is lacking right now...

NO PLASTIC ARMBANDS. Less plastic the better. Seems like you are trying to save cost.

Don't worry about the complainers about how long the project is taking. Do it right. I am however disappointed that you aren't testing the fabric for electrodes... Seems like you are rushing now. This has much more chance to be a success if you deliver a quality product. You won't have the money to make an upgraded version later if the first is bad.

Headphones development is the priority because it can not be modified once shipped. The app can be developed with time... Especially if you enlist the donated user feedback and data from use. You won't get much enough or most important feedback at this point.

      Aluminium armbands NOT plastic.

      Please use aluminium!

    14. Thais Parreira on

Do not use plastic! Please! That might lower the cost but it will make the product much more prone to break in key areas! My computer headsets that had metal bands on the top with cushioning are the best I've had for both comfort and durability.

      Another delay...
Just out of the blue, still hoping the other backers will finally wake up and report this project to @kickstarter :
" We’ve also commissioned our first tooling, a huge milestone! "
Seriously? You are 100% delayed: PROMISED your product in 1 year, 2 year almost passed, people graduated, finished school, retired from job while you are still not able to do what we paid for, now getting even more delays, and after 1 year (ONE YEAR, 12 months, 365 days) of delays you have the guts to say that is a huge milestone?
Guys (the other backers) if you really respect so lowly your money, what about send the same amount (let's make a deal, half of that) to me too? I promise some hypster photos, useless and empty updates every month too. Is that enough right? Ah... almost forgetting: I will also go to some world-wide super expensive conferences with your money and telling you it's all for the business (who cares about a product here, right?). Deal? Can I start the campaign too? :D

I understand that this is the first concept to product that you guys embarked on. I empathize.
I understand that you and your team have taken a risk and I appreciate that you have. I empathize.
I understand that you guys are trying your best and it’s easy for me to be sitting in the sidelines becoming irate and angry saying, “Where is my bloody headphones?” I empathize.
What I don’t understand is how could have you guys been SOOO off with timings and product launch?
I’m not having a go at you guys, i genuinely appreciate what you guys are doing and I’m sure you guys are under a lot of stress. I’m merely venting.

      1) Varies but some days something upbeat and lyrical like fall out boy and then other days steady beats like amazon's dub step station.
      2) How long concentration is maintained, of course external events might interrupt this. Not sure if Mindset can determine level of concentration but that would be good to know too
      3) I am going to be concerned with determining what times I am able to concentrate the best and try to do busy work at the most inopportune times and complex coding at the peak times. Currently I listen to amazon music to help focus but if mindset software could somehow integrate with like music from there that supports focus that would be pretty neat. Not sure if anything like that is possible though.

Please, please, please, DON'T use plastic. That's the exact reason SONY had a recall on their MDR 1000x and had to give me a 'free' pair or the upgraded ones. Sony used plastic in a 'key' wear area... I'd hate to see your project go south because of using plastic when metal is a far petter option.
