Mind of Mirrors:
We (Dan and Leland) have recorded our fourth album, which is undeniably our best yet, a blend of our signature sound of tight vocal harmonies and guitar acrobatics with a slightly different instrumentation that incorporates a variety of traditional Americana instruments in a pop-rock setting. As we were writing for this record, we realized that we were telling a story over the course of the album, although each song stands on its own. We felt that the story needed to exist in another medium in addition to the music and, since we're both huge fans of comics, we decided that a graphic novel would be the perfect companion to the record. We wrote a script for a graphic novel and had the great fortune of connecting with...
a virtuoso and celebrated comic creator whose credits include The Simpsons, Lucasfilm and the band, Rush.

Art in Progress
This Kickstarter campaign will fund the creation and printing of the graphic novel, "Mind of Mirrors" and the printing of the CD by the same name that will be included with the book. Both the book and the album can be enjoyed on their own, but the idea is that each informs the other so that, by experiencing both the record and the book together, you can take a journey with us through this story on several levels. We are so thrilled to have the opportunity to create this project that has been literally years in the making and of which we are so proud. We hope you are as excited as we are to bring this epic, multimedia piece to you!

The story opens with our hero, Jack, in a jail cell. He’s just turned 25, and has landed himself in a type of trouble that’s become all too familiar to him after another bar fight. Growing up in a small mid-Western town, Devils Lake, ND, the child of an absent mother and a distant father, with no real prospects for his future, Jack has spent his life rebelling against the mediocrity that seems to be his destiny. Unwilling to live an average life, he has been raging through the world with no regard for his future. Alison, his best friend since childhood, comes to bail him out yet again. Jack realizes that there’s a romantic charge between them that he hadn’t acknowledged. They fall in love and Jack is forced to question whether he might be able to live a domesticated life after all.
One night, after some time of domestic bliss, Jack ends up at the local watering hole and meets an unusually persuasive and flamboyant man who gives him a drink from a golden flask. The stranger persuades Jack, under the influence of the unusual elixir, that he needs to explore all that the world has to offer before he’s tied down in a small-town, average life. The elixir begins to transport Jack into a mirror world in which he becomes more and more enmeshed, losing his mind by degrees until he is deeply engaged in a totally unfamiliar, hallucinogenic reality.
After many adventures and a further departure into the alternate reality, Jack struggles to disentangle himself from the mirror world, but ends up further down his own personal rabbit hole. His quest is to understand not only the strange landscape in which he's been trapped, but also the nature of his self.
Jack is 25 at the start of our story and has spent his life in his small, rural hometown of Devils Lake, North Dakota. Despite being an intelligent, introspective young man, he has a rebel’s spirit and a penchant for landing himself in trouble. Jack is bored with his small-town life but, having fallen in love with Alison, he pictures himself satisfied in Devils Lake. After his encounter with Mr. Green, he's not so sure.
Alison has been Jack’s best friend since they were little. She is the quintessential girl next door, the daughter of the wealthiest banker in Devils Lake. She and Jack have always looked out for each other, and their relationship has blossomed into something more. She is loyal, loving and patient with Jack, but when he leaves her all alone, how long will she wait?
Never actually referred to by name, Mr. Green is the embodiment of the classic trickster (Coyote, Loki, etc...). He wears an outrageous green silk suit, has pitch black eyes and large teeth that are a little too white. With the vaguely mystical but malicious charm of a charlatan salesman, he encourages Jack to leave his unexpectedly comfortable life to explore the possibilities available outside his narrow experience.
Mind of Mirrors, the graphic novel, contains mature content. Reader discretion is advised. Mind of Mirrors, the rock album, is for all ages.
Risks and challenges
The main challenge we face is to simply get the funding to make the art and the publishing of Mind of Mirrors a reality. The record is done, as is the script. What we need now is the support of our fans and friends to make sure we can create the art for the book and get it and the CD printed. If we are can achieve our Kickstarter goal, we will be able to share this epic story with whoever is interested. This is a project that's been many years in the making and we are so proud to have the opportunity to share it with you!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
