After a catastrophic event aboard an Interstellar Correctional Fleet (ICF) prison ship, you find yourself, an ICF prison guard, stranded in an unknown galaxy full of escaped prisoners. The prisoners grow stronger with every passing moment. Build space stations and support structures around planets, upgrade your ship, and siege enemy locations in an effort to gain strength while weakening the enemy. Take risks when necessary, but don't forget that you only have one chance.
Convicted Galaxy is a 2.5D space based territorial action game that combines aspects of rogue-lite and shoot ’em up sub-genres with a third person perspective.
The primary goal is to escape the galaxy, with secondary goals of rescuing friendly pilots and collecting their mission logs to unlock new content.
Although not necessarily like them, development was definitely influenced by great indie games such as FTL, Risk of Rain, Nuclear Throne, and The Long Dark.

Each play through contains a new galaxy, constructed using procedural content generation. Every star system is generated by the game, consisting of unique planets, asteroid belts, wreckage, and other space objects. Each planet is generated as well, containing various materials that you access via space stations and harvester satellites in order to expand your capabilities. While exploring, you will also find disabled escape pods with pilots in need of your assistance.
Explore with caution, you’ll have to fight through the many prisoners that are now roaming free throughout the galaxy. Dogfight prisoner ships, defend your territory, and attack theirs.
Lucky to have made it off the prison ship alive, you start with nothing but the escape pod that got you off the ship. It is equipped with a few handy tools, such as a plasma blasters, tether, and radar, but they won't keep you alive for long in this hazardous new galaxy without intervention. Use your tether on disabled escape pods to rescue pilots and discover what secrets their mission logs hold.
Due to the advanced nature of this mission, each escape ship was upgraded to an Advanced Capabilities Exploration (ACE) pod for easy expansion. Upgrading these pods into a variety of fully capable vessels is not out of reach. Core upgrades will make you a challenge for your enemy, but eventually you'll need something more. Discover new upgrades through mission logs recovered from disabled ACE pods and wreckage. Stack upgrades to create unique and powerful combinations. Upgrade the hull to really gain an advantage with missiles and special abilities.
There will be a variety of satellites to construct and utilize, from harvesters that collect resources from the harsh planet surface below, to laser defenses that protect your territory while you explore and siege the enemy.
Each hull upgrade will add a new special ability to your ship’s capabilities. These abilities utilize power cores, which is the primary power source of your ship’s systems, and can be used in creative ways, to attack, defend, gather resources, or as a quick getaway. Hulls also stack, so you can use special abilities in unique combinations too!

Convicted Galaxy is developed by Mind Grown Software, a small indie game studio from Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The team consists of Ryan Bemowski, Aaron Koback, and Kevin Barthman.
Ryan thought of the foundational idea that lead to Convicted Galaxy. He founded Mind Grown Software LLC and manages the project while having a lead role of designing and a secondary role in programming.
Aaron has an uncanny ability to create futuristic industrial sounds and orchestrate them in an appealing and emotional manner. His style and experiences exemplify the projects persona. He creates and composes all audio in the game while also having his say in design.
Kevin, seeing great potential in Convicted Galaxy, joined the team after he left his stable software engineering position to follow his dream of developing interactive experiences. His primary role is programming with a secondary role of asset creation, also having his say in design.
Although Convicted Galaxy is pretty far along, we still need more time to make the gaming experience we feel you deserve. You know the old saying, right? "Time is money." Well it's true. We've stretched ourselves thin, and need a few more months of full-time development to finish production and finalize for release.
A successful Kickstarter campaign means that we will have enough money to keep working on Convicted Galaxy full-time for 3 more months. The funds will help pay for our monthly costs of living and a few expected release costs, such as Plus licenses for Unity, our game engine. With the extra time we will gain from your help, we will be balancing the game and adding additional planned content, such as additional space structures, upgrades and mission logs.
If over funded, we would like to bring some indie help on board to increase the variety in visual assets even more than we already plan to. New effects, asteroids, satellites, stations, ships... we'll just see how far it can go while continuing to increase the continuity of style. We would also love to get translations into a variety of languages and possibly even some voice overs.
If not funded, we will still release Convicted Galaxy at some point. Without being able to work on the game full time, the release date will likely push back and the game will not have the same amount of features that are planned.
Risks and challenges
Challenges are the name of the game in developing anything new. Most of the core mechanics and assets have been implemented already. We do have a reasonable amount of changes to make. Any change takes time and includes a bit of uncertainty. However, we are confident in our abilities to overcome any challenge.
With any software development, the biggest risk is missing deadlines. To minimize the risk, we have planned out the remaining features, testing, and required resources to finish and release Convicted Galaxy. Along with precautions we have built into this campaign, the more pledges and support we receive through Kickstarter, the more likely we will be able to quickly combat any deadline missing threats.
As Kickstarter backers ourselves, we know there is some risk of not getting the rewards you are promised. The three of us have been working diligently on Convicted Galaxy for over a year now. We are compassionate about finishing this game and delivering a fun and gorgeous product. We have put a lot of time, effort and money into this game, so barring anything bizarre, we will deliver on our pledge rewards if successful. We have minimized the risk even further by limiting the rewards to content that we have direct control over.
All backer supplied content (names, mission logs, and others) will be screened and may be rejected or altered to create a cohesive experience for players.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
