About

Aloha, I am a Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi photographer who has been documenting the Nāpali coast of Kauaʻi for over 25 years. Recently the United States Postal Service selected one of my photos of Nāpali Coast on Kauaʻi for the "O Beautiful" postage stamp set.

Recently the Garden Island newspaper ran an article on me and it can be see at:

Tim DeLaVega: Man of Many Talents

This is the first book in a very Limited Edition series on archival documentation of the ancient Hawaiian sites located in the land districts of Nāpali Coast State Park.

For me this book was produced as my way to Mālama Miloliʻi, to care for and help protect this sacred land through documentation and education.

This very Limited Edition Hardbound, archival book is 12.25 wide and 10 inches tall with over 150 pages.

Inside the archival paper is 100 lb gloss coated premium white.

This fundraiser is to produce the smallest limited run off a traditional press, as I feel a 4 color press produces richer blacks and deeper grays than a digital press.

It opens with the Hawaiian place names, winds of Miloliʻi and ancient Hawaiian legends, to pay homage to those that lived here for over 700 years.

Each section is broken down into the basic types of sites, such as Heiau or Hawaiian temples, with if possible their name and any information from Hawaiian sources or scientific research.

Extensive research was done into the ancient Hawaiian legends and newspapers Dr. Keao NeSmith, Kauaiʻs preeminent Hawaiian scholar.

And many of the archaeologist, including Myra Tomonari-Tuggle, Martha Yent, Alan Carpenter, Summer Moore and Dr. Jennifer Kahn have written on their research and findings in Milolii.

Inside we tell the story of the Hale pili, The last Hawaiian traditional grass house, which was removed from Milolii in 1900 and moved to the Bishop Museumʻs Hawaiian Hall, where it stands today.

Including the only known interview of a Miloliʻi native Kaumeheʻiwa, done by Reverend John M. Lydgate in 1917.

Renowned archaeological artist Diana Izdebski has contributed numerous drawings of artifacts and how Milolii may have looked in 1650.

Most of the photos in the book where done using 4X5 film specifically for films archival quality. As Black & White film is still the only proven archival photographic media.

Here are a few sample images from the book...

Nāpali (the cliffs) Coast State Park is located on the northwest side of the island of Kaua’i in Hawai'i. This rugged coastline is characterized by 500 to 4000 ft. high, wave cut cliffs, which are dissected by steep sided, amphitheater-headed valleys and is generally described as a rugged and inaccessible landscape. Yet here early Hawaiians settled in the 11th century and the archaeological landscape indicates an intensive development and occupation of almost all available land along this rugged coastline. The present landscape represents the end product of a long history of settlement; yet little is known of it origin or its evolution from its natural to its present culturally modified form. While the last family abandoned the area at the beginning of the 20th century, leaving very little written documentation of the ancient Hawaiian life on the Nāpali coast.

Starting back in the 1990’s I started documenting with large format cameras the abandoned ancient Hawaiian sites throughout Kaua’i and especially the Nāpali Coast, this project is to establish a portfolio of the existing ancient sites before they are lost. I have recently finished my documentation of the land district of Miloli’i, part of the Nāpali Coast State Park. These photographs are set to be published this winter along with all the ancient Hawaiian information that we were able to find and the archeological information from the scientist who have worked in Miloli’i.

This wilderness area is only accessible from mid-May to Labor day each year, weather permitting. Access has been by ocean going sea kayaks packed with enough supplies for the duration of the expedition. The ground cover is lantana on steep cliff sides, and the climate during these months is very much a cloudless desert, which limits the available times one can photograph the sites without getting too much contrast in the negatives.

For any questions please feel free to ask...

Mahalo e Aloha ke Akua, Timothy DeLa Vega

Risks and challenges

The reason I am asking for $15,000.00 is this is the cost of the smallest print run on a traditional press done in San Francisco by Edition One Press. I can do much smaller runs on digital press but then the individual cost goes way up and I feel only the traditional press gives the rich blacks and dense grays that I desire to see in the photographs...
I have already done all the proofs of the book and the book should be ready for printing within a month of a completed campaign.
As my last book was a hand made restored version of the first book dedicated to surf riding I feel the hand made cards will be a good evening project.
Again I thank you all for all your help and interest. Aloha ke Akua (Go with God)
