Milo and Bruno Rocket To The Moon: A Sci-Fi Picture Book!
Adventurous young bears Milo and Bruno build a rocket and launch themselves to the Moon! A tale full of science and imagination.
I love sci-fi and I owe much of what I am today to the reading I used to do as a child, particularly science fiction and fantasy books. This project started as I looked through the landscape of children's picture books for things to read to my own boys and I hope you like it.
I write stories about characters who take risk and are able to dive off into the unknown, as many little kids do. Who but a child or someone with child-like wonder would fire up a time machine or ride on a rocket to the moon, not knowing if and when they might return, and never even thinking of the question? I have a family now and I can’t do things like that anymore. But Milo and Bruno can!
In this book Milo and Bruno are going on a space adventure to the Moon.
The goal is to show Milo and Bruno, who are fraternal twins, about 7 years old, and who happen to be cartoon bears out exploring the outer limits of their world.
My mission is to get kids to be curious enough to ask their parents how to build a time machine. If they can go to the Moon before dinner. What would happen if they flew to the sun, or travel to another planet, or 20,000 leagues under the sea? These are the types of questions that science fiction asks, and answers! That's why I think addressing some of these themes, even lightly, in picture books read to and mention for young children, seems like a worthy thing to do.
If I can get even one person to ask a question like that, I will know that I’ve created something meaningful. Creation is a joy, and it is hard work, and great for its own sake. But I would love it if a child asked me questions like that. That would make it really worthwhile. Milo and Bruno are smart, and even a little (or a lot) nerdy, but they always know that there is more to know. Milo is more of a dreamer, more theoretician and Bruno is more experimentalist, more of an engineer or builder, but the big imagination that only children have is what drives their adventures, and it also drives my creation of these titles.
Here is how Milo and Bruno MIGHT look. But it won't be exactly like this. And it might not even be close. (These illustrations and the ones from the video are from an as yet unpublished Milo and Bruno tale, not this book.)
I hope some of this rubs off on your children as you read these books to them and with them, and that the book spurs them on to imaginative journeys all their own. These are designed to be fun to read for kids as well as their parents.
Milo and Bruno build things and do things. Their lives are full of passion, intensity, magic, and infinite possibility. I hope the same for everyone out there. There is always more to know, and more to imagine.
Money raised (including any that exceed the goal) will go towards:
1) Paying for an illustrator that will really bring the characters to life.
2) Publishing physical and e-book editions for the Milo and Bruno stories I write.
3) Paying fees to Amazon and Kickstarter for this wonderful platform.
4) Getting the word out to as many people as possible about Milo and Bruno's great science fiction adventures!
Milo and Bruno Rocket to the Moon (and all other titles) will be fully-illustrated picture books in their final form, ranging from 24-32 pages.
In addition to pledging funding, here are a few ways you can help let others know about this project:
- Please share with any math, science & technology lovers you know, whether they have kids or not! Science has sparked their imagination at some point during their lives, so maybe they'd like to fire up the next generation.
- Email your friends asking them to check out this Kickstarter page!!
- Like the Milo and Bruno FB page. https://www.facebook.com/MiloAndBruno
- Share this Kickstarter page on Facebook, Twitter, and any other of your favorite social media venues.
- Please share with moms and dads with kids.
- Please share with anyone you know who has nieces and nephews they want to encourage.
- Please share with anyone you know who just might know someone who knows someone who can help!
I have an undergrad degree in physics and was formerly a math teacher. We need to get more kids excited by science at an early age, and I believe science fiction is a great way to do this.
Just as a side note, the text for “Milo and Bruno Rocket to the Moon” is already 100% completed. (If you have ever written anything yourself, you know that I am obviously joking, as like many writers I will keep making small revisions until I am knocked unconscious and the galley is pried from my hands and sent to the printer. I am writing “Milo and Bruno Build a Time Machine” concurrently with this Kickstarter campaign just to make me stop torturing myself with the these little tweaks for a while.)
Little children gladly accept as truth even the strangest stories that other tell them. So if your child asks you about time machines, or aliens, or exactly HOW to build a rock to take them to the moon after reading one of Milo and Bruno's adventures, picture me apologizing to you as you try to explain if that helps. But be sure to picture me smiling, because that is surely what I'd be doing...
If these are the kind of books you'd like to see, please support this project and spread the word however you can.
Thank you for your consideration and for your support!
Risks and challenges
Getting e-books and physical books from inception to publishing requires lots of steps. Finding the right illustrator that fits the text of the book is a labor of love. Then, you have to pay them a fair wage for their work, because they are not doing you a favor, this is their job, and they are supporting themselves and their families. Then you need to pay a good graphic designer to do separate layouts and covers for both the print and e-book editions. Etc! The support you give to this project to bring it to life goes to help defray some or all of these costs, and lots of others items not listed above. There are lots of risk and challenge in all of those items, many drafts, lots of sketching, and lots of late night conversations. But there is also lots of love. I believe Milo and Bruno are ABSOLUTELY worth it, and I am honored that you are considering going on this journey with us! Thanks again!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
