About this project
**** STRETCHGOALS! ****
Oh, my, goodness! I can't believe we hit the goal so fast, thank you so much! Even though we've surpassed the goal, every pledge helps - if I can increase my print run, it'll make things so much easier!
£1000 - SMASHED! A5 print of either Nix, Belenus, Titan or Taranis in all physical tiers (all four in tiers £18+) See designs here!
£1300 - SMASHED! Sticker sheet included in all physical tiers!
£1800 - SMASHED! 3D paper toy of Bryn - as a physical print in all tiers £5+, and as a digital download for everybody else! (Example here)
£2400 (or 300%) - Temporary tattoos AND a digital download of a Bryn dress up doll (with comedy outfits you can vote on!)
Following the successful releases of NPC Tea issues 1+2, I’m now looking to print issue 3 as a 32-page, UK-sized single issue comic. If you haven't read NPC Tea before, you can also pick up the first two issues here too!
NPC Tea follows an ex-fire summon, an elf and a human as they attempt to save a failing tea shop in modern day Cardiff. Soon they find out that a lack of customers and caddies upon caddies of rotting tea are the least of their worries, when a type of banned magic rears it’s ugly head and threatens to destroy the entire city. Bryn, Oz and Hannah must unite if they are to save their business – and ultimately the city itself.
An 8 issue series, NPC Tea escalates from slice of life comedy into an epic fantasy, twisting typical RPG and fantasy stereotypes into a modern day setting.
It’s about what happens when there are no more dungeons to crawl, when magic needs to be organized, and when orcs, elves and humans try to live peacefully side by side – a balance that’s harshly tested when an entire city is threatened with destruction…
In this new issue I’m really excited to introduce the ice spirit, Nix! The sinister summoner group appear to be building in strength and Hanny and Oz reach an understanding, while Bryn struggles with the idea of his former masters rising again…
BUT, MILMO, THIS CAMPAIGN IS FOR ISSUE 3. WHAT IF I’VE NEVER READ ANY NPC TEA?
Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! I have plenty of tiers to choose from that include copies of all three issues: either all digital, all physical or a mixture of both. If you’d like to try before you buy, I also have the entirety of issue 1 as a webcomic on my Patreon page, which you can read for just $1.
SPEAKING OF REWARDS, WHAT DO I GET?
EVERY backer gets a Kickstarter exclusive mini-comic in digital pdf format, and in print for backers £5 and above. PDF copies of all three issues start from just £3, while you can get issue three in print from £5.
Comichaus have also very generously donated a 3month subscription to their indie comic app to all backers £12+! In a nutshell, it’s Netflix… for indie comics. Sounds awesome, right? I’m pumped about this project as I believe that it could be revolutionary to the indie comics scene, and I’m honoured that NPC Tea will be available through Comichaus!
I’m also incredibly excited to be working with four amazing artists, who will be providing print artwork for this issue. These artists are…
The spectacular KIT BUSS, artist for Critical Role and whose clients include Channel 4, SelfMadeHero and Playstation!
The unbeatable ANASTASIA CATRIS, creator of Cirque Du Mort, Colour me Mindful and sketchcard artist for DC, IDW and Marvel!
The astounding SIAN JEFFERSON, creator of Book of Fey and Soosh, and animator extraordinaire!
And the simply awesome FAYE SIMMS, co-creator of The Foldings, freelance illustrator, games artist and all round incredible human being!
These illustrations will be at the back of the issue and also available as separate prints. Designs are TBA at the moment, but I (and the artists themselves) will be sharing sketches and progress work as the campaign progresses.
If the campaign surpasses the goal amount, firstly, WOOHOO! Secondly, I have a number of stretchgoals to announce, including additional artists, stickers, and more prints!
WHAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE SAYING:
Issue 1 of NPC Tea launched last November at Thought Bubble in Leeds, and since then I’ve received some fantastic feedback:
"With a story full of wonder and intrigue as well as some of the most stiking visuals seen in comics of late, this is an issue worthy of delving into - ideally along with a nice cup of tea." - James Blundell, Pipedream Comics
"This all ends up feeling like a story that would develop if Neil Gaiman took over Saga and added in a tea shop but in Sarah’s hands the story & art blend together like the perfect cup of tea into something just as unique." - Comics Anonymous
WHY KICKSTARTER? WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
It’s difficult to run a self-published indie comic, and while I’ll be publishing issue 3 regardless of the outcome of this campaign, it would be fantastic to be able to cover printing costs via crowdfunding. I’m a one-man band, so keeping my comics going is a real labour of love. If this campaign can bring NPC Tea to new audiences, I’ll be happy - if I can get issue 3’s print run funded, I’ll be ecstatic!
The complete goal amount goes towards issue 3’s print run, and contributes to reprinting issues 1+2. It also covers paying the fabulous guest artists. Any money over the goal will go right back into the project (I’m aiming for larger print runs!) and I’d love to share any extra money made with the four guest artists as well.
Issue 3 is entirely scripted and the layouts are completed - the final artwork will be finished mid-august ready to print for the end of august. I've worked to these same timescales for issues 1 and 2, and I'm completely confident in my workflow and that I can repeat the same process for issue 3.
I’ve run a successful campaign before for a larger goal, and I’m fully prepared for every eventuality.
ER… WHO ARE YOU AGAIN?
I'm Sarah - I also go by Milmo - and I’m a comics artist based in Cardiff. I’m known for my indie titles NPC Tea and Heart of Time, and I also work as a freelance artist and writer. I’ve also worked in games (you can see my art and even hear my voice in Master Reboot on Steam). You can find examples of everything I do on my website here.
Thanks for reading!
Risks and challenges
Issue 3 is completely scripted and panel layouts drafted. I was planning on releasing this issue by the end of August anyway (in time for London Super Comic Con), so deciding to run a Kickstarter doesn’t change that. I completed the last two issues very quickly so aside from any serious unexpected illness or injury, I expect that everything will go to plan.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
