The next generation Million Mile Light® is the new and improved planet friendly battery-free safety light that's powered by motion and is designed for everyone who's active in low light - whether you're a runner, hiker, dog-walker or you walk children to school.
The new design is now hyper-sensitive, more adaptable and secure to attach, more versatile and stylish to wear, more durable and even more visible. Working perfectly with the tiniest of footsteps as well as for the most demanding runner. This is a human powered innovation for everyone (and their dog).
The new MML can be attached to running apparel, outdoor clothing, school coats, rucksacks, dog harnesses and more. A single MML produces a 180º fan of light, so our Visible360º double pack worn front and rear makes you visible from 360º, ensuring that you and your loved ones can be seen from all angles from up to 200 metres away.
Just clip it on and go outside knowing that you'll be visible when you move... and of course, it never requires charging or needs expensive batteries replacing because this eco-innovation is entirely battery-free. Conveniently meaning it's always ready to be used, which is great for you, your pocket and the planet.

A magical beginning
In January 2017 Tom made an impromptu trip to Edinburgh for a few days where he hoped to seek inspiration to write a children's book that incorporated Million Mile Light. By sheer coincidence he found himself writing 'Lets walk to school' on the same desk, in the same room that J.K. Rowling wrote the very last word of the very last Harry Potter book, ten years to the very day that she finished writing it.
'Hopefully all pre-school and primary schools will be motivated to be involved in the ‘Let’s walk to school’ campaign. We want all children to be safe, and when using the roads in darkness it is imperative that our precious little people are seen at all times.' - Michael Woodford, MBE Executive Chairman, Safer Roads Foundation
'A fabulous book and a brilliant product that have the potential to safe lives. Million Mile Light really does shine a light that shows how creativity can help others' - Caroline Norbury MBE, CEO of Creative England
'I would buy one, because I run at night and I want to be safe and there hasn't been a good running light until now' - Charlie Dark, Founder of Run Dem Crew and star of Mind Over Marathon
'We encourage all road users to look after their own welfare and the welfare of others. Whilst ultimate responsibility lies with the drivers of vehicles, the Million Mile Light is an effective way to ensure pedestrians can be seen when out on the roads during times of low visibility' - Joe Burns from Brake, the road safety charity
'I've just backed this fabulous idea. Motion powered light for #everyone. It's SUCH a top idea. A life saver' - Suzi Perry, BBC TV Personality and Gadget Connoisseur
Little steps can make a big difference
Our vision is to provide the light for use by school children across the planet. But we need to test it first. We know that the lights have the potential to save lives but the question is, will children wear them?
We don't know for sure so we are working with the Safer Roads Foundation who have pledged their support to assist us with the roll out of hundreds of lights for free to a number of pilot schemes in UK schools this autumn. From there will be able to assess whether we need to factor in any other design considerations to encourage mass adoption and widespread use of the design.
We're also working with Wiltshire Council to explore rolling the lights out for use in areas where children are at higher risk from traffic while walking to school. We hope this inspires other councils to follow suit, especially in rural areas where the problem of being seen is most prevalent.
But none of this can happen without your support, which is why we're looking to kick-start the production again. As you know, the set up costs and minimum order quantities to bring the improved MML to production are not insignificant. But we've done all the development and have walked this path before and we know we can get there and deliver something amazing. So please support us if you can and share our story far and wide.
Sponsor a school
Join us on our mission and get your company to sponsor a local school class or provide free lights to school children overseas - and join our list of 'Walk To School Champions' below. Either find a school local to you or donate overseas via us and the Safer Roads Foundation. We have a special class sized bundle of 30 lights and books available at a stellar price. It couldn't be easier to pledge your support and the details are below. Of course, be sure to share the good news with your local paper and on social media.

The first generation MML was designed especially for runners and was a great success - we've manufactured tens of thousands of lights to date we've had only a handful of returns. We also gained industry appraisal and were voted by runners as 'Best Accessory' at the 2017 Running Awards in London. But our goal was always to make the light work for everyone and to do that we needed to make it more sensitive, so much so that it could be worn by a child walking to school, on a dog harness as well as on an elite ultra marathon runner. We wanted to achieve a universal design that works perfectly for all people.
In developing the light further we listened to feedback as to how to better the original product and found two distinct areas for improvement - greater versatility and security in how it fastens to clothing - and increased sensitivity so that the light would work while walking.
After two years fine tuning the design using the feedback from our original customer base, we have worked with our manufacturing partners to optimise performance.
We have a universal design and we have a mission. We want to encourage as many journeys by foot as possible and we want to empower as many people as possible to stay safe by making their own light.
We support the UN's Global Goal for Sustainable Development, whose mission is for a safe and healthy journey to and from school for every child by 2030 - www.childhealthinitiative.org

We have left nothing to chance on this project. Our component suppliers are already selected, the CAD for the mould tools is already approved and we are ready to go from every angle of production. It helps to have such an experienced team on board who have all worked on several successful Kickstarter projects. Many of the prototypes you see in our video are actually pre-production prototypes made with our production components, by our manufacturer and they perform simply superbly. So confident is our manufacturer that our 5-year warranty is 100% backed by them.
So how long do you have to wait?
- Mould preparation – 30 days
- Pre-production samples and final mould work – 30 days
- First production – 30 days
- Delivery to UK and US warehouses and fulfilment to individual supporters – 15 days
So it should be about 105 days from when your funds arrive with us but let's say 4 months for safety as the odd day will no doubt slip in.
We’re keeping our stretch goals pretty simple. If, by the power of the people, we raise over £150,000 in pledges we can switch to post-consumer waste plastic that will reduce the environmental impact of production.
When we first asked runners why many of them didn't wear lights while running in low light we were surprised to learn for most it was because of the hassle of having to worry about powering yet another device. To be fair, it's enough of a challenge to keep your smart phone charged without worrying about powering peripheral accessories and safety gear. So we designed the battery out of the safety light and the Million Mile Light was born.
To us, being battery-free gives us the most efficient and elegant design solution. We don't want a throw away society. We don't like waste. We love renewable energy. We can't bear planned obsolescence .. and we think there's something quite wonderful about powering the light you need to stay visible with your own energy. Our brand and our products are battery-free and we are batteryfree.com
The harmful process of mining rare materials for battery production is a good reason for being battery free too.

Risks and challenges
Our last campaign ran like clockwork and we have everything planned out and ready in the same way, if not better. But don’t take our word for it simply take a look at the comments on our last campaign from our previous backers. Our favourite is “This is the best managed campaign I have ever backed” (said by somebody the other day on the comments…) So whilst you can never plan for every eventuality we are very confident we have everything in hand as much as we can. We have met and overcome issues with our first generation product so we go into this second generation with our eyes wide open and the experience we need under our belt.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
