This project's funding goal was not reached on March 17, 2012.
About this project
My name is Milton Guity, Jr. People often ask me "What is Garifuna?". I'd give them the short answer that I've said a thousand times before. "It's my culture… we're scattered throughout Central America". Like many of us tend to do, I speak as though I know where I come from. But do any of us truly know? How can I say "I am Garifuna" and not speak the language? Am I truly what I say I am simply because of my lineage? Or perhaps being who you are runs a little deeper than that. I want to travel to Central America to answer many of the questions we have often asked ourselves because as I was once told, a tree without roots will die too quickly.
This is a documentary that will teach the viewer about a culture that very few people know about. Although both my parents were born in Honduras, I was born in the US and don't actually know too much about the Garifuna culture so along with learning about who we are you will also get to see my experience as I reconnect with my roots.
With funding for this project, I will be able to go to Honduras in April of 2012 to begin filming with an annual parade that celebrates the Garifuna's arrival in Central America. I will be traveling with my father who will serve as a translator, an assistant director and a camera and lighting expert. During our stay in Central America we will travel to several Garifuna communities and film the day-to-day life of the Garifuna people. We will discuss with them what it means to be Garifuna and interview important community leaders. We will also film here in New York City interviewing well-known Garifuna-Americans.
Once filming is completed at the end of May 2012, I will take the rest of the summer to edit the film (estimated to be 60-90 minutes). I expect to be done with post-production by the end of August. During this period of post-production I will also be preparing the incentives for delivery to my wonderful backers. I plan to have all incentives sent out in the month of September along with a festival-ready film completed.
I feel that making this film will bring me closer to my roots and bring the public to a closer understanding of what it is to be Garifuna. It is ultimately an wonderful opportunity for us all to take a plunge to learn and discovery more about this world we share.
So, when someone asks me "What is Garifuna?" I want to confidently and proudly answer "I am Garifuna".
