About

Memebr8k started back when I was in middle school. I had recently discovered a website that printed custom cards, and I began messing around and buying prototypes of some of the games I made. I tried making a trading card game based in Science Fiction called 'Galactic Exodus', I made a sauced-up version of the card game War named 'War 2.0', and a few others. Needless to say they didn't go anywhere, but they were fun to experiment with anyway.

Whenever my family has a gathering, after dinner we always sat around a table and played Apples to Apples. Recently, it's been kind of awkward since my sister is off to college, so I'm the only one under 40 years old there. And playing through the game, I would constantly get people and ideas that I simply didn't know about or relate to. Overall, I felt detached from the game.

So my middle school self made a cringy parody called 'Llamas to Llamas'. It was the embodiment of pre-2010 randomness humor. Go back and watching 'It's Raining Tacos' by Parry Gripp and you'll see what I mean.

A couple of years later, I looked back at Llamas to Llamas and decided to reboot it. This was how Memebr8k was born. It had more structure than the previous game, was more organized, and the game overall flowed a lot better (yet was still far from perfect). It was Freshman year of high school, and I played it with my friends at school, and took it to many Boy Scout camping trips. I carried it around in a Pokemon Card box that got more and more discolored and dirty over time.

Part of me wanted to take a stab at publicizing it. I was considering trying to make this Kickstarter last year, but my high school has a Senior Project, where you have to write a paper, perform a project, and do community service. Because of that, I purposely delayed the project so I could fit it in. This Kickstarter here is that project.

And that's where we are now. I took the cardlist from the previous game and revised it. I have a massive spreadsheet of all the cards from the past version and all the ideas that nearly made it in but not quite. I then spent most of my Spring Break making the cards and getting them printed.

I don't expect this to become a profession. But if it succeeds, the profits that I do make will probably go towards paying off student loans when I go to college in September. But hopefully I can make some people smile and maybe even bring them together too.

Risks and challenges

There aren't many challenges because the game is mostly done. I will, however, have to research which company I want to print the game, and deal with all the other business stuff. My dad has a degree in business and so he'll most likely help me through the process.

Also, I will need to do research about the legality of using brands and trademarked characters. I'm sure there are multiple ways to not infringe on copyright, and if worse comes to worse I will avoid or alter questionable cards altogether. There are more than enough cards to use as a fallback in case the legal side is too sketchy.
