About this project
LAST AUGUST combines the Coming of Age tale with allegorical science fiction to create what I think is a unique yet relatable tale of youth. Testament to works like Children of Men and Blindness, the "science" of this story actually plays a secondary role to the personal struggle of the characters, in this case, a group of fifteen-year-old kids trying to enjoy their summer together, hoping to develop their budding social and romantic relationships in a world becoming increasingly bleak. And as summer winds down in the suburbs, doesn't it always feel like its own little apocalypse?
I've been working in music and promotional video for some time now, but I'm extremely excited about the chance to direct a narrative that unfolds at a slower pace. I feel confident that if I'm able to execute the vision in my mind, we will have produced a film worthy of the festival circuit.
As we move forward, more and more talented actors and filmmakers are joining the LAST AUGUST team, including the duo of Columbia grad and award-winning filmmaker Rachel Mersky and talented art / casting director Hannah Becker (producers and co-founders of IIWII Studio), independent videographer / FX specialist Taylor Lisney (director of photography), and recording artist / music blogger Sam Sodomsky (music supervisor). Together, we're in the process of fleshing out a great cast and crew, all of whom are passionate about bringing this story to life.

We Need Your Help!
Unfortunately, we can't make this film for free. While I'm already spending plenty of my own money to make this thing happen, and many people are donating their equipment and time, we're still far short of our budgetary requirements. Money you pledge will go towards the following costs:
1. Lens & Audio Rentals
They say that the only thing as important as the person behind the camera is the lens in front of it. It's also a known fact that a poorly-shot movie with great sound can be enjoyable, but a beautiful picture with terrible sound is unbearable to watch. While much equipment is being shared with us for free, high-quality glass and audio recording equipment is expensive.
2. Set & Costumes
I've written this story as small as possible to keep production costs down; we're shooting in our houses and neighborhoods whenever we can, and most props will be borrowed or purchased at deep discount. There is, however, still a price tag on this portion of the film.
3. Cast Services
While many films about teenagers tend to use actors in their early 20s, I feel strongly about making sure the cast of LAST AUGUST is actually made up of fifteen- and sixteen-year-old kids. I believe that this will bring an authenticity to the film that we might otherwise miss. Unfortunately, this does result in a necessary increase in budget (getting the actors to and from rehearsals, set, etc.). Plus, you know, you gotta feed 'em.
Keep in mind that if we don't reach our goal, no Backers are charged, and we receive nothing! So please consider pledging, even at the $5 or $10 level (although you can give as little as $1, and I'll still love you forever); we're pretty excited about our list of rewards and hope you are, too! If you can't become a Backer right now, PLEASE forward this link along to anyone you believe might be interested in our project; spreading the word is a wonderful way to help us out at no cost to you.
As a filmmaker, I'm always eager to learn about the experiences of others making their films. For that reason, my cast, crew and I will be doing our best to document the entire process, from pre-production through post, and making all of that information openly available FOR FREE. So whether or not you choose to become a Backer, we hope you keep checking in with us here as we make this movie!
Thank you for your time, and hopefully for your pledge as well.

#1: New $5 Reward - All backers, beginning at the $5 level, will now receive a playlist of music that inspired the film!
#2: Traveling for Deliverables - For donations at the $200 or $500 levels, we will travel on our own dime to create your content if you live within the Greater Philadelphia Area. Outside of this area, we ask that you please cover our modest travel expenses, but we're still happy to spend the time and come to you!
