About this project
THE DEATH OF RASPUTIN. Yes, we know that if you've followed our other projects, it seems like we're fixated on death. Or making death funny. No, we don't know what's wrong with us.
WHO ARE WE? We're Mildly Fearsome Films, the creative team that brought you the 50+ award-winning musical comedy short film SUDDEN DEATH!, the multi award-winning comedy web series RESEARCH., I HATE IT!, and currently running the festival circuit MURDER? (hey, no punctuation on this new one!) comes a brand new comedic mini-series: THE DEATH OF RASPUTIN.
*please visit http://www.mildlyfearsomefilms.com for more information
WHAT IS THIS? THE DEATH OF RASPUTIN is a hilarious comedy web miniseries that we'll be shooting just before Christmas. This is a joint project between Mildly Fearsome Films and the Azusa Pacific University Theater program. We've been lucky enough to cast the amazing Kyle Howard (MY BOYS, currently leading YOUR FAMILY OR MINE on TBS) and Golden Globe winner Barry Bostwick (ROCKY HORROR, SPIN CITY) as our leads, as well as Mark Christopher Lawrence (Big Mike on NBC's CHUCK) and a number of supremely talented up and coming actors from the APU theater program. We'll be shooting the project in December, editing in the spring and premiering online in May of 2015 on the Mildly Fearsome Films Youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/mildlyfearsomefilms). APU has provided us with part of our budget, which is amazing, but we need an additional $5000 at a minimum to make this thing happen!
WHAT'S THE STORY? For the first time ever, Mildly Fearsome Films is adapting a totally true historical event - the assassination of Grigori Rasputin, advisor to the tsar and tsarina in early 1900s Russia. You may be familiar with a version of Rasputin if you've seen ANASTASIA. Or if you just love history like we do.
The short version is, Rasputin was a peasant who worked his way into the good graces of the emperor and his family through his "healing powers," gaining sway over the tsarina and eventually having quite a bit of say in the empire's governance. Rasputin was an... interesting character to say the least, and was hated throughout Russia for a variety of reasons (he's even now considered by many to be one of the most evil men in history). If you want to know more about Rasputin, you know, Google him or whatever.
Where our story begins is in Rasputin's assassination, possibly the most hilariously botched and insane assassination attempt in history. I'm not exaggerating when I say that in the course of one night, Rasputin was poisoned, shot twice, kicked in the head repeatedly, shot again, bludgeoned with a dumbbell, and depending on who you asked, drowned. Sounds hilarious, right? It will be, don't worry.
So what are we doing here? Over the course of 3 five to eight minute episodes, we've taken the story of Rasputin's assassination and adapted it into a modern, comedic retelling. That means while we've taken some creative license with the dates, location, dialogue etc... we're sticking as close as we can to the actual events. Which makes for a project we're incredibly excited about. I can tell you that I've wanted to make this event into a movie/series of some kind since the first time I heard about it when I was 15 years old. And now, with your help, we're finally going to get to.
If you've enjoyed the humor in SUDDEN DEATH! or RESEARCH., I promise this will be right up your alley.
LOGLINE: Felix puts together a "crack team" of assassins to murder Rasputin, advisor to the emperor and, in their minds, threat to the empire. It goes just like, hilariously badly.
WHY SHOULD I DONATE? Well, first because it's gonna be good. I'm super pumped about it. But beyond that, Kyle Howard and Barry Bostwick are about as perfect as you get to play Felix and Rasputin. If you don't recognize Kyle's name right away, you've probably seen him before. He's a super talented and funny actor, and he and Barry are going to be amazing together on screen.
If you don't know who we at Mildly Fearsome Films are, check out some of our projects below, including INSIDE THE EXTRAS STUDIO, a show starring Barry Bostwick that we recently sold to Pilgrim Studios, then produced, directed, etc... The show was recently featured in Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, etc... You can check that out here:
Beyond that, a lot of you have seen and enjoyed a lot of our projects, but none probably more than Sudden Death! (if not, see below). Well, this is the first time since SD! that we can say the entire creative team is back together as Dave Selle will be joining us as our DP. Add to that the writing team, the producing team, the production designer, the lighting guys and Adam directing and editing... it's the closest we've been to the original crew of Sudden Death! since we shot it... and we couldn't be more excited.
Why do you need our money? Now that you've seen what we can do, let's talk about why we're doing a Kickstarter. Well, simply, we love all our projects, but this particular project is insanely exciting to us, and we want to make it as good as it can possibly be.
We are committed to stretching every dollar as far as it will go. (We are bargain basement heroes!) That being said, we are also committed to making THE DEATH OF RASPUTIN look and feel like a million bucks. We already have around two thirds of the budget from APU, but we need to raise the rest to be able to make this thing!
Here's what we'll use your money towards:
Locations and Props/Set Dressing. The location for this film will be the largest single production cost on the project, and right now, we just don't have the money for it. I don't think anyone wants to see a version of RASPUTIN that we shot in a friend's studio apartment, so we need your help to make this work. We will have to rent a location and design & decorate the rooms to fit our needs.
Wardrobe. We know we're old fashioned, but we really feel our actors should be clothed. And that adds up!
Crew. We have one of the best indie crews there is, and they deserve to be paid way more than the very, very small amount this will allow us to pay them.
Food. A fed crew is a happy crew. Our days are long and a hot meal goes a long way.
There's obviously more, but the more we have, the better this mini-series will be. So help us out! If you want to know for sure that your money is going into capable hands, here's what we've done on small budgets in the past:
Please consider joining with us to make this project a reality. And this isn't just a total charity case - beyond that awesome perks you see to your right, your donation will bring this project to reality... and you'll be able to see the end product for free online.
Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges
How does Kickstarter even work?
It's pretty simple:
We set a goal. We set a deadline (Thursday, December 4) You pledge whatever you can to help us reach that goal. Bigger pledges get bigger rewards from us. (like tee shirts, secret links and dates with the writer – you can even get a character named after you!) If we reach (or hopefully far exceed) our goal by the deadline, your credit card is charged, we get our funding, and you get the cool reward you chose. If we don't reach our goal by the deadline, your credit card is NOT charged, and you do NOT get the cool rewards. Shipping costs are relative (you'll see them in the reward tiers). It's okay to exceed our goal (Barry Bostwick is much more likely to not phone in his performance if he's well fed!) but it's NOT okay to make even a penny less than our goal. In short, we have to make our goal by the deadline, or we don't get our funding, and you don't get your rewards. What rewards?
You always get something for your money...even if you pledge as little as five dollars. Check out the fun, unique, and meaningful rewards on the right hand side of your screen. Pick something you like because your pledges will help us redefine the level of comedy and quality for web series so we can create an outstanding product.
Why should you support this web series?
We'd never ask you to support something we wouldn't put our own necks on the line for. Just as with SUDDEN DEATH!, RESEARCH. and INSIDE THE EXTRAS STUDIO, we are stretching our time, resources and money as far as they can possibly take us and will continue to do so to make a great web series. THE DEATH OF RASPUTIN will be a web series of superior writing, directing, production and of course, comedy. (that is what we do isn’t it?)
We believe in this project!
THE DEATH OF RASPUTIN has been in development for nearly 8 months... but really 18 years, in our directors head. We’ve gone through numerous drafts and brought on the very best cast and crew. We know that it's going to be fun, funny, unique and entertaining (and hilarious of course). We’ll be bringing you a new product in a way you’ve never seen it before with the quality and commitment with which we created Sudden Death! and Research. And you really should help, because Barry Bostwick needs the work.
So join us! And let’s create something super awesome together.
