The T-Shirt You Can Play – Tic Tac Toe Tee
It's a T-Shirt You Can Play! Tic Tac Toe Tee is a fun way to bring people together.
Tic Tac Toe Tee is the t-shirt you can play. It's a conversation opener, an icebreaker, and a fun way to bring people together.
Tic Tac Toe Tee gets people excited. It is made with special light-weight velcro in the front, a screen printed contrast grid, and every t-shirt comes with eight movable, embroidered velcro playing pieces. The t-shirts are high quality, constructed in the USA, and very durable, washable and playable over and over again.
Story and Idea
I'm Mikko, and I've been working on the Tic Tac Toe Tee idea for some time now. It started as I was backpacking around the world by myself a few years back. It was a bit lonely at times to be honest. I was looking for ideas for fun ways to connect with people and playful conversation openers. Halfway through the trip, I got the idea of making playable t-shirts. I made the first prototype by putting a game of Tic Tac Toe on a black t-shirt.
I was attracted by the simplicity, the instant recognizability and the fact that Tic Tac Toe is not a game that you have to take too seriously – but winning is still cool! Walking out, within the first 10 minutes, someone had commented on the shirt being cool and asked where they could get it. The idea was born.
From there, I polished the idea, had some more prototypes made and tested them out just by wearing them and giving them to friends. The reception was so positive that I knew Tic Tac Toe Tee deserved a bigger audience.
Actual reactions from real people
We have been wearing the t-shirt prototypes around town and when going out. Here are some unprompted reactions and comments.
"Is it wrong I want that t-shirt right now?"
– Gavin, at a house party
"Excuse me. Where can I get a t-shirt like that?"
– someone on the street, within 10 minutes of wearing the first prototype
"I need that. I'll wear that to a bar. I'll get my friends some, too."
– the guy I always run into at the falafel shop
"Oh my god. Do those move? May I?"
– a girl in the line to the bar

Tic Tac Toe Tee is a high-quality t-shirt that can be worn and washed just like any other t-shirt. But it can also be played! We use a special light-weight velcro to create a Tic Tac Toe gaming board, with screen printed grid for contrast. The t-shirt comes in black (if the campaign is very popular, we can add more colors), in sizes S-XXL.
Every t-shirt comes with eight pieces – four X's and four O's – all packed in a nice little cotton bag for safekeeping between games.
Just in case you lose any pieces, we will also make it easy and cheap for you to get extra ones. But they do stick to the shirts very well, so probably you won't lose any!
All reward levels include free US shipping!
In general, the more support the campaign gets, the better and more awesome we can make the products. We already know a couple of things we could be doing in case we hit some milestones.
- $20,000: Unlock Tic Tac Tote Bag! If we reach $20,000 with the campaign, you can choose between a t-shirt and a high-quality, sturdy black canvas tote bag, with webbing strap handles. The Tote has the same special velcro-based gaming board on it and comes with eight pieces in our custom canvas bag, just like the Tic Tac Toe Tee does. If this goal is reached, every reward with a t-shirt can be substituted for the tote bag (wholly or partially in the case of rewards that get you more than one t-shirt!). And if we go well over that goal, we can make the tote even awesomer with more details.
Process, Manufacturing And Materials
We've created a number of prototypes along the way with constant testing. We wanted to optimize the quality and the wearability of the t-shirts, and finding a light, pliable, breathable velcro – that was still durable enough for thousands of games – was a key development. Working with US textile specialists we've been able to secure the best special velcro that works perfectly with our pieces and with comfortable, traditional high-quality t-shirts. Unlike the bulky industrial strength velcro you know from your backpacks and camping gear, this is a really light and svelte member of the hook-and-loop family.
For a t-shirt, the process includes quite a few moving parts (pun intended). We get the garments made to our specification, printed with the contrasting grid and shipped to the trimming factory. At the same time, the velcro for the shirt is manufactured and cut to size, and shipped to the same factory, who then put it together with the t-shirts, adding detailing. And all the while, the embroidered pieces are being created elsewhere, bagged in our custom made pouches, shipped to us, awaiting to be united with the t-shirts, and finally to be shipped to their lucky new owners – that's you!
We're lucky to be based in San Francisco with its rich history in the garment industry. We have found local factories to work with in constructing the t-shirts. We will at least put together the garments, the velcro and the prints locally. If the campaign goes notably over the goal, we'll be able to concentrate more work and volume locally.

Risks and challenges
Manufacturing risks: no project is without unforeseen risks arising in manufacturing. We held off launching the project until we knew we could get the materials we wanted in the way we wanted them, but there may still be problems arising on the way that we have not anticipated.
Delivery risks: we've modeled and managed the delivery pipeline, and can't see major risks at the moment to the timeline. However, there are always risks in creating new things.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
