A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

The Story. Way back in 2014, we ran a campaign on the LEGO® CUUSOO website (Now LEGO® IDEAS). We sumited a design of a Buffalo Airways DC-3. We came so close to having LEGO® pick our design to be produced as an official set. We narrowly missed our target and the project was dropped. We were so bummed out. Thousands of people from all over the world voted for the DC-3 design. When it did not make the cut, we felt that we have let a lot of people down.
The project received massive social media attention. Even 3 and a half years later, I get asked about where people could buy a Buffalo Airways DC-3 LEGO® set. I still have the only physical prototype and to be honest the version we made was a little big and very fragile. I always hoped that the project would have been selected so I could see what a production version would have looked like.
The Decision. So in September 2017, I decided to once and for all make a production DC-3 set out of real LEGO® pieces. I want to share it with the world so anyone could have one. So I began my search for a designer and company to produce a kit that we can sell directly to our fans. I was lucky enough to find the owner and lead designer of ICHIBAN Toys, Chris White. After a short discussion, he was on board and excited at the chance to build an all-new DC-3 design!
We are taking what we learned from a couple previous aircraft models and going back to the drawing board to re-design the ULTIMATE DC-3 set!
Our first prototype was a success! Chris was happy with the pieces used and the DC-3's structural durability. The only step left is ordering the parts need to start making the kits.
This is where you come in. The money raised from this campaign will go directly into ordering the brand new LEGO® bricks to start building up the sets for you.
We are only making 200 of these sets. So if they sell out here on KICKSTARTER... then that's it!
Why did I pick ICHIBAN Toysto design our DC-3? ICHIBAN Toys have produced almost 30,000 sets for customers and companies all over the world. This new DC-3 kit is based on that experience and knowledge so you can have confidence that what you are getting is a high-quality product.
