About

FREE DOWNLOAD: Please click this link for a high-resolution JPG of the game. (Instructions for game assembly are on the sheet, and game instructions are in this Kickstarter.) This will make 2-inch square cards from your laser printer or ink-jet, rather than the high-precision large round cards with this Kickstarter, but it will give you a chance to try the game and experience the weird, almost unexplainable effects of physiologic gameplay. Please feel free to post your results in the comment section. Please click here.

"Cool game! I have no idea how those cards work, but there was definitely something freaky going on once we got to the second game." -- MC, Brooklyn

Scientists now know of little support for Telepathy, ESP and Clairvoyance, even though the U.S. Government spent millions of dollars in the Stargate Project to try to understand what was happening in their studies. So how do you explain the ability of some players to win at this game over and over and over?  It defies mathematical probability! You will discover that your mind has abilities to pick up on tiny, nonverbal cues better than you ever imagined.

Telepathic Training Wheels is a scientifically-designed game for two players, and each round takes about 10 minutes to play, or a bit longer when players are evenly matched. It is fun for ages 12 and up.It uses physiologic triggers to make for maddening gameplay as players gradually find it more and more difficult to bluff or hide their strategies. The rules take only a few minutes to learn, but unlike regular card games, the color, line and graphic structure of the game act on s the mind and body to to trigger nearly unnoticeable reaction in the players that change each time you pick and choose a new card.

Your opponent picks a card, places it face down, you place your card face up, the player with the lower-ranking card privately chooses a card to discard, face down. Players alternate. If you match a card on a face, moon, sun or star, you get back all of your discards. Eventually, the weaker player runs out of cards and loses. Mathematically, the game should be evenly matched, but inexplicably, strong players emerge, game after game! Why?!?!

As shown in the groundbreaking work of Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, people react to tasks in front of them due to the how much ability they have to handle the task and how difficult is the task. (We're just huge fans of Professor Csikszentmihalyi, he didn't have anything to do with our Kickstarter or this game.) For example, if the task is easy and you have plenty of ability to do it, you might feel relaxed (and your body might respond with more regular breathing, decreased blood pressure, with pupils that open slightly). But if the task is difficult and you don't have sufficient skill to handle it, then you might get anxious, (and your skin may flush, pupils may dilate, and your breathing rate may increase). However, if you have more than enough skill to handle that difficult task, then you may enter a state where time flies and you feel perfectly at ease, right in the zone ... that's "flow."

"We were down to my last two cards, and it seemed definite that he would win, but then I came back, and I got into it, he couldn't match any of mine and I kept matching all of his. I beat him in the next three games. He was not happy." -- MJS, San Diego

How it works

Telepathic Training Wheels exploits the emotional reaction of color, line and structure with careful design of the cards and how they relate to your body's physiology. For example, red and yellow will trigger a different physiology than blue or green. Or jagged lines may be more visually stressful than smooth, undulating lines. So even though you aren't at a ski resort skiing down the bunny hill, or skiing the double black diamond run, the action of picking a card with this specific design vocabulary can trigger a tiny, nearly unnoticeable response in your eyes, skin and breathing that is a tiny shadow of those two extremes. And this mind-body response can change the pace and reaction of the game, which will make for maddening, addictive play! This reaction is typically subtle, so that even though a yellow sun on a blue background may make you think of pleasant times, the actual color scheme and structure of the graphic leads to an emotional reaction closer to boredom than wild times on the beach with friends. These subtle emotional color and design dependencies are something on which we have a lot of data and experience.

"Can I keep these?" -- CB, Denver

Background of the game

Telepathic Training Wheels was originally made back in 1999, but because we couldn't solve some problems with the rules, it was never commercially released. The cards were made to a high standard with quality card stock, full film lamination, die-cutting, and high-end Mitsubishi lithography. Because of these release difficulties, the entire production run was put into storage in 1999 and it stayed there until recently, when a gifted mathematician, musician and friend of the game, adjusted key game play points to solve the rules problem. In doing so, he also made the game much easier and more fun to play. The original artwork and plates were accidentally destroyed back in 2002, so this Kickstarter limited edition of less than 1,500 games is all that is left of the original run, and this 1st Edition game can never be reproduced the same way again! It is a true collector’s edition. For the last twenty years, Scientific Illustration Services has developed deep experience with emotional response to colors and design with products here on Kickstarter, and hundreds of backers, typically graphic designers and artists. But unlike these graphic designer tools, Telepathic Training Wheels is a game for everyone who doesn’t mind being betrayed by his or her own card game.

Plan for Future Editions

If this Kickstarter is a success, we hope to do a 2nd Edition Telepathic Training Wheels. But since our original printing and digital masters are now gone, it will look different, with changes to the designs, and possibly some different cards. If you think that Telepathic Training Wheels has a future as a fun and interesting game, and if you would like to own this very limited edition that can never be made again, please consider backing this project. Your support can help us launch the 2nd Edition, which will also ensure the rarity and value of your limited, original-run, 1999 1st Edition Telepathic Training Wheels.

Production

Since we have all these incentives in stock, and ready to go, we expect a relatively short time from close of the Kickstarter to ship your incentives. We do need to unsheet the games, collate and assemble them as part of the handwork and pack them, but the manufacturing of the cards is complete. If we can generate enough backing for this Kickstarter, we will be able to hire a small hand-assembly production staff to help get your games out more quickly.

Telepathic Training Wheels is a card game unlike any other, in that the rules take only a few minutes to learn, but it is essentially impossible to master without a lot of experience playing different opponents. We hope that you are as excited by this game as we have been to bring it back from the crypt with updated rules. It is now back out into the real world, and into your hands.

"I should have let her win a game, but it was more fun watching her get angry. She kept telling me she hated it, but she kept asking to play another game after she lost." -- AH, Brooklyn

Risks and challenges

These cards are already manufactured and in the warehouse. We still need to unsheet and pack the individual sets which will take from a week up to a month or two depending on how many incentives are needed. If we hit our first stretch incentive, we'll be able to hire an assembly staff to get your incentives out more quickly. This is a very low-risk project because these incentives games are already produced from our original 1999 production run, which was never released until now. Once this original set is gone, they will never be made the same again. If this Kickstarter succeeds, and we are able to make more of this game, we will have to make new digital files and designs since we no longer have the original masters for this game.
