New stretch goal! Get another book! If we hit $10,000, Tilbury House Publishers will send all backers an e-book copy of Ed Muskie: Made in Maine.
I'm incredibly excited that my book, As Maine Went: Governor Paul LePage and the Tea Party Takeover of Maine, is finally headed to the printers!
Before it's available in bookstores this July, I want to give those who are most interested a chance to get their hands on the very first copies and help to fund a marketing campaign to get the word out.
As a columnist and blogger for the Portland Press Herald and Bangor Daily News, I've revealed some of Governor LePage's most controversial statements and actions: his claim that 47% of Mainers refuse to work, his secret plan for a special session, his assertion that a wind turbine is driven by a "little electric motor" in order to trick people, the exemption of his own pension from budget cutbacks and the wholesale plagiarism of the Alexander Report, to name a few.
Those all pale in comparison to some of what I've dug up and am publishing for the first time in As Maine Went. You can be the first to read all about it.
But this book isn't just about LePage's controversial comments and actions. It's an examination of the 2010 election, the grassroots movement that helped him win, the effects of corporate influence on government and what LePage's policies have meant for the people of Maine. It's a nationally-relevant case study of what happens when a moderate state is taken over by the Tea Party.
Of course you can get physical and electronic copies of the book, but thanks to the generosity of a bunch of great Maine artists (and a few more that I'm still hoping to get on board), I'm also able to offer an album with an eclectic mix of relevant music, including several songs about LePage. Anyone backing at $15 or more gets the As Maine Went Soundtrack.
There are a ton of great rewards, whether you're able to back the book for $5 or $1,000. See the full list on the right.
If we meet the $4,000 goal, I'll be incredibly appreciative and we'll have to come up with some new stretch goals for the project. If we're lucky enough to get to that point I'll be asking backers what more they'd like to see.
Special thanks to Chamberlain, The Colwell Brothers, Pard the Countryman and Strong Like Bull for their contributions and to Alex Steed and Knack Factory for the awesome video. If you'd like to have your music included on the EP, please contact me through the link on the right.
Risks and challenges
There are few risks with this project. The book is written and edited, Tilbury House is a solid publisher with a long history of quality work, and we're committed to getting rewards out quickly as soon as the campaign ends.
If there is absolutely insane interest, we might have to print additional copies, with a delay of a few days or weeks.
There's always a chance that we won't hit the $4,000 goal to successfully Kickstart the project, which would mean no rewards for those who have pledged and we'll have to scale back our marketing plans for the book. To make sure this doesn't happen, please help spread the word about this campaign!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
