Over the years I've had several friends and colleagues say, "Mike. You should do a book of your photographs". It's been a goal since I first picked up a camera in the early 90's. After doing research into printing and financing a proper bound book I realized the cost is quite high. I thought it'd be wiser to take a baby step of sorts and publish this large format booklet first. The cost is much lower and the quality of the printing is excellent. I like the idea of people holding the booklet in their hands and flipping through the pages and seeing the pictures BIG. Small size books are very popular. Good photos come off better BIGGER.
I recently attended the NY Art Book Fair and noticed several pieces by reputable publishers printed on this large format newsprint style paper. This Kickstarter project will help me get acquainted with the process of self publishing and prepare me for possible future endeavors.
Over the years my photo blogs have been fairly well received. I've had work linked on popular contemporary photo sites like TINYVICES.COM, HAMBURGEREYES.COM, ne-te-promene-donc-pas-toute-nue.tumblr.com, http://www.emptykingdom.com/main/featured/mike-spears-revisit/, and http://www.amypink.com/ to name a few.
I want these images to have life in the physical world. Not just on a blog or website. Posting has become vital in the dissemination of my images to a viewing public. The selection I've made is a greatest hits of sorts. I'm hoping the attention these images received online translates to photos people would purchase as an incentive reward or contribute to the making of this piece.
The booklet is going to be 24 pages full color. The pictures will be printed to the edges (not full bleed) filling up as much real estate on the page as possible.
Any incentive images you'd like custom printed by me can be found on my two photo sites http://www.mikespears.net/ and http://alieneyeball.tumblr.com/. Thanks so much for reading and possibly contributing. Looking forward to seeing how this project does.
