About this project
Hello Kickstarter backers! Here it is, The Monstrous Makeup Manual: Book 3- the final book in the Monstrous series. I can't wait for you all to see what's new and exciting in this 3rd installment!
*WORLD-WIDE SHIPPING FROM THIS CAMPAIGN!
Here's what Oscar Winner Howard Berger had to say about the Books...
"I have known Mike Spatola for over 30 years, and to read his new "Monstrous Make-Up Manual"- well, I wish I had this when I was a kid! It is by far the most comprehensive, detail oriented, with the largest amount of photo reference I have seen in a how to monster makeup book, EVER! I loved the variety of makeup artists Mike has featured, from up and comer Melissa Jimenez, to old school magician Steve LaPorte to Super Makeup Star Joel Harlow. This book is filled with great techniques, what supplies and materials to safely use on your actor, and the best advice from true Hollywood Makeup Masters. If you love Monsters and Makeup, this book is a MUST HAVE!!!"
Howard Berger, Co-Owner KNB EFX GROUP Academy Award Winner
*As in the previous Monstrous Makeup Manuals, Book 3 will keep presenting all makeups and techniques in the very step-by-step, highly illustrated, easily to follow manner. These books are truly a complete course in character, prosthetic and special fx makeup! You simply cannot get the information in these books anywhere, at any price!
What's New in Book 3?
All new original creations are coming! Here's a few...
The Artists: So far, I have photographed original makeups by Kenny Myers (The Last Samurai, Lincoln, Return of the Living Dead), Oscar winner Steve LaPorte (T2, Lost, Beetlejuice), Bruce Spaulding Fuller (Underworld, T2, Thor), Richard Redlefesen (Batman vs Superman, Star Trek, American Horror Story). Of course, I will personally present many of the techniques and a few originals makeups of my own design as well (including a full body makeup- a very sexy/scary Succubus makeup on celebrity/actress Christine Nguyen).

What makes The Monstrous Makeup Manuals different from any other makeup books out there?
Frankly, they are FUN! The way the makeups are presented and the subject matter (MONSTERS!), it's a wonderful way to learn high-end makeup and lab techniques! If you've read of either of the previous 2 books, you know that they are written exactly as I speak, so you'll feel that I'm right there in the room with you teaching you every step. The monsters may be scary, but learning to make them is easy and fun! The photos for each technique or makeup are so step-by-step that nothing is left out. From the first technique to the last, you will get the feeling that this is not only fun, but can be really easy to do!
Please, don't take my word for it- Here is what Monster Maker Shannon Shea had to say about the books...
Here's what EMMY Award Winner Eryn Krueger Mekash had to say:
”I've got all my makeup girls here buying your book. They all want to know your secrets!!! Great job again, Michael! It is a terrific tome of knowledge and wonderful pictures. I also like the humor you added and repeating your steps in the text, not assuming people will remember what technique you used in the previous makeups. So cool! I read every word, even though I knew how to do a lot of the lab work (100 years ago-I can always use a refresher!). I loved the painting (you're so good!) and I laughed a lot-Quasimodo shaving! Hahhaah! It was obviously a lot of work to get this book made-tons of great makeups.”
Eryn Krueger Mekash, Make-up Department head, American Horror Story

Here's what Oscar Winner Steve LaPorte had to say:
"Mike, you put together a well thought out book that has something for everyone. Thanks for including such in depth info through out & in my segment too. You included every little detail that I had to offer. I hope someone saves the day somewhere on a set because of that."
Steve LaPorte, Oscar and EMMY Winning Makeup Artist, Los Angeles
Even though most of you may be here to secure your earliest copy of The Monstrous Makeup Manual Book 3, at the best price possible, I've tried to create some other fun rewards including the previous 2 books, as well as t-shirts, photos, and even chances to get original pieces from the book (a severed head, or monster mask!) You can even become an artist, or an executive producer of the book!
I think the chance to work on a makeup for the book is an amazing reward, or even one of my film projects, but for the aspiring makeup artists, the critique reward can be a very valuable one!
And of course the NEW Hard-bound Collector's Edition Sets, Mike's LIFE and DEATH color system palettes, and many other rewards are available too!
Announcing Stretch Goal #1- When we reach $25,000, all backers that selected a book (any book or disk), or any level over $50 as their reward, will receive a collection of "Favorite Quick Tips" by all the artists featured in Book 3, as well as many other makeup superstars. This will be a PDF file delivered electronically upon completion. You'll find this booklet an extremely valuable problem-solving tool!
Announcing Stretch Goal #2- When we reach $30,000, I will make a "how to" video on lighting, photographing and editing your makeup photos to look like the images I create for the books! The Monstrous Makeup Manuals are famous for the high-level of great step-by-step photos. But, in this video, I will show you how I go about creating the beautiful finished portraits of the makeups for the book. From the set up, to the equipment I use, how to light the subject, creating the images and the finishing edits to make the creatures pop off the page- you will learn it all. This Stretch goal reward will be available to ALL backers!
Here's what Curtis Smith had to say about Book 2:
"I was STAGGERED by the amount of detailed information that they contain. I'm sure you're getting lots of emails like these, but I wanted to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for your hard work and amazing generosity with the secrets you know. If you decide to do a BOOK 3, I'll be among the first to show you support."

Risks and challenges
The risks are small. Having previously written 2 other popular and well-reviewed Monstrous Makeup Manuals, I am confident that this will surpass the previous 2 in techniques, artists and photography.
This time, I started working on it a good bit before the Kickstarter campaign, photographing 8 of the makeups already. That will definitely speed up the process of getting this book done and out to the backers. Once I'm done, it goes to my editor, then it's in the printer's hands.
Truthfully, the biggest challenge is knowing when to stop working on it! There are so many artists that wish to contribute, and it's difficult to say no! They all have such great stuff to share!
Other than that, the shipping of the rewards is always a little labor intensive and time consuming. But we got through it unscathed last time. So, we'll get through it a bit easier this time.
PS- the new cover is simply a mock-up. That will not necessarily be the finished coverLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
