What is I Read Comic Books?
I Read Comic Books is a podcast hosted by Mike Rapin, a comic book fan with a need to talk about comics. Joined by a handful of comic lovers, Mike and the gang discuss everything under the sun in comic books from how a comic is made, how we manage our pull lists, our favorite characters and stories, and more; the range is unlimited.
After almost three years of creating this show on our own and talking with our fans, we want to do more. With the funding from this Kickstarter, we will be able to record in-person episodes, shows on the road, and on-site interviews at conventions with comic creators.
And make sure to check out our Goodreads Group where we have ongoing discussions about comics plus our monthly Book of the Month club that powers our Monthly Goodreads episodes on the show.
Listen to some of our favorite and most popular episodes:
- Episode 119 | I’m Here For One Thing And One Thing Only (Comics and the Male Gaze)
- Episode 117 | Special Guest: Matt Horak
- Episode 114 | Shitty Moms with Hearts of Gold
- Episode 90 | The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
- Episode 61 | Skin Cape
- Episode 42 | We Support Gluten-Free Comics
What are you funding?
The goal of this Kickstarter is to help fund a few things:
In March of 2018, IRCB is planning to head to Emerald City Comic Con where we look to record and create as much content as possible. This includes creator interviews, minisodes (a 30 minute show hyperfocused on one topic), on-the-spot microsodes (2-5 minute chats or thoughts on a topic), and (potentially) live episodes. But with our current equipment, this isn't a possibility.
With the equipment funded by this Kickstarter, we will arrive at ECCC prepared.
- Zoom H1 Handy Portable Digital Recorder ($99)
- BEHRINGER XENYX Q802USB ($100)
- Behringer Ultravoice Xm8500 Dynamic Vocal Microphone, Cardioid ($20 x3)
Since our start, our website and hosting costs have been funded out of pocket, your funding would take the cost of hosting our website, domain costs, and media hosting off of our shoulders for one year.
The total cost: $85
A Nod To Our Editor
Zander is the unsung, often mentioned, editor of I Read Comic Books podcast and he has dedicated the past two years of his life to making this show sound fantastic. He puts up with our antics, vocal tics, and technical glitches every week and turns our show into a golden piece of audio.
For our Primary Goal in this project, we want to give him $1 per episode ($74 for the full year = 52 regular episodes and 12 bonus episodes). It's not a lot, but it's a start.
The greatest band in the universe, Infinity Shred, has lent us their music for our show since it started and without them, we would not be a complete podcast.
We'd like to give our thanks for their music over the years in the form of $100.
To make sure we are able to purchase everything funded by this campaign, we will be adding an extra $28 to our costs to cover the Kickstarter fee.
Anything above our initial goal will go directly into covering manufacturing costs for the T-Shirts and stickers as well as to be used to help pay for our place at Emerald City Comic Con in March of 2018.
What Do You Get?
For starters, you get another solid year of I Read Comic Books, but with even more content. On top of that, you have your pick of pledge levels, each with their own reward:
$1: Thank you!
While there won't be something physical for you to hold, we will cherish your donation no less than any other. You've been kind enough to lend us your dollar, and for that, we thank you.
$2: A shout out
We will call your name from the abstract mountains of the podcasting sphere on our show with a thank you, your name, and a short (PG) phrase.
$5: Your Name, Inscribed
On top of your shout out on our show, we will place you in the forever-archives of internet history on a special, well-decorated page on our website, specifically for our 2017 Kickstarter backers at this tier and above.
$10: An official IRCB Sticker
For this pledge level, you have ascended and reap the benefits of a true physical reward: A beautiful sticker designed by the insanely-gifted sister of IRCB's host: Rebecca Rapin.
(includes all lower tiers)
$25: An official IRCB Shirt
For this level, you have graduated to a higher plane. In order to hold your sanctimonious position, you will require a garment of true power: An IRCB T-Shirt (designed by Rebecca Rapin). (unisex, sizes XS-XL, 2X-4XL add $3)
(includes all lower tiers)
$75: We Must Talk
At this point, you have become a lord above us and we must speak with you. We will have a half-hour chat with you about comics, life, and more. It will be glorious.
(includes all lower tiers - Limit 15)
$100: Craft an Episode
It is here that your power as a backer has grown to a nigh-containable force of momentum. We shall seek your sage advice to craft the topic for an episode of our show.
(includes all lower tiers - Limit 10)
$200: You + Us = Minisode
We have no words, we simply require you to join us, if only for a moment. At this level, we will not only talk with you about something of your choosing, we will record that discussion as a minisode for our show.
(includes all lower tiers - Limit 5)

Risks and challenges
The primary risks and challenges of this project are in the potential that I Read Comic Books may not be accepted for a booth at Emerald City Comic Con. If our application is rejected, the funding secured for Emerald City Comic Con will be used toward purchasable items in our stretch goals, future server and domain costs, and towards manufacturing costs for T-Shirts and Stickers.
We may also run into conflicts in scheduling Hangout sessions with backers at tiers where Hangouts are an option. We will not renege on any backers, but ensuring regular guests and Mike are available may delay delivery of that item.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
