Greetings, my name is Mike McQueen and I...Am..On..A..MISSION - a mission to help boys with reading!!
You see, when I was young, I was a poor reader and had a terrible attitude about it - I’m sad to say that I passionately hated reading. This experience hurt me in all academic areas, it caused me to barely graduate HS and even made me miss out on a basketball scholarship.
Despite my academic problems, I made it through HS, graduated from college 5.5 years later, and (to the surprise of many) went on to become a successful teacher & award winning TL who loves to read.
Now I didn't realize it when I was young, but my parents and teachers didn't know some simple, yet very important things that would have made a huge difference in my overall success as a student.
3 burning questions have really bothered me over my 19 year teaching career:
1) Why did I hate reading so much as a boy?
2) Why couldn't the adults in my life help me?
3) What can I do now to help prevent other boys from the same fate?
Inspired by these questions, my mission began almost 8 years ago. I started devouring information like a starved Lion at an all you can eat steakhouse. I read tons of professional books & articles. I interviewed famous authors, attended workshops and worked closely with hundreds of parents, teachers, librarians, and of course, boys.
As my expertise grew, I started traveling all over the country (and Canada) teaching thousands of adults how to help boys with reading.
About 2 years ago, I started compiling my knowledge & experience into a big organized list of over 110 “Quick Tips”. I am so excited now because I am about to take a big step forward in my mission. I am just about finished organizing my “Quick Tips” into a book and with your help I plan to publish it.
Current Stage of My Book
It's been a very long and difficult road trying to get this far. Since I teach full time, I have to steal minutes late at night, during lunch, and at the crack of dawn before school.
I started writing this thing 2 years ago, but became side tracked trying to help elect school board members and save libraries from budget cuts.
Oh yes, I was also side-tracked with my first iPad book, The Vanishing Coin and my “Reading Rocks” presentations.
The rough draft will be done in the next few weeks. Since I am publishing my book, it means that I have to do everything myself. I’ll need to find a few book coaches to guide me in having it edited, formatted, printed, marketed, and sold. I have already invested so much time, energy, and money into getting it this far, the bulk of which has gone toward developing my blog, GBR. My efforts have paid off though as my blog has attracted more than a half MILLION page views. The groundwork has been laid out, which inspires me even more in accomplishing my mission.
I NEED YOUR HELP
The ultimate success of my mission depends on hiring the right experts and getting it properly printed, which all comes down to raising enough money. Here is a an approximate cost breakdown of what is still needed:
$1,000 - 2 book coaches
$1,000 - Professional editor
$2,000 - Marketing campaign
$600 - Interior page design
$400 - Launch party with local media
$4,000 - Print copies
TOTAL - $9,000.
As you probably noticed, my Kickstarter goal is only set at $5,000, but this would only allow me to print a very small number of books & I’d have to focus on only selling the eBook version. The real goal is to raise $9,000 which would cover a decent print run. The bigger the order is for a print run, the cheaper each book costs.
The panel on the right shows the various awards that you will get in return for your kind donation. As the campaign unfolds during the next 30 days, I will add a few new rewards, so stay connected via “Campaign Updates”.
The bulk of rewards include copies of my book, but be sure to check out the higher priced rewards that involve me helping kids directly. Please note that you can also be a “Sponsor” to send me on an author visit to share my other iPad books during my “Reading Rocks” presentation. You can pick a classroom or school that you know or have me pick one. (I know tons, including a few at risk schools that are in extreme need of help). Wouldn’t it be cool to know that you can play a role in inspiring a big group of kids to read (especially those struggling boys)?
JOIN OUR MISSION
So there it was...I poured out my heart to you about my mission and dreams for publishing my important book. Now it’s time to share how I will give back to you if you can make a donation.
This fundraiser is an “All or Nothing” campaign which means that we must reach the primary goal by collecting at least $5,000. If we are even 1 dollar short, the entire fundraiser will fail and not a penny will be raised. And how sad would that be for everyone - especially the boys. I’d love to meet our dream goal of $9,000, but I will be thankful if we can at least reach initial goal.Needless to say, I need your help. Please….share my campaign with your friends and if possible, make a donation yourself.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!
Risks and challenges
One challenge that I worry about are the possible edits that will be required after a professional editor goes through my rough draft. If the list is long, my plan is to go an an author retreat in my RV and spend 18 hours straight each day until the changes are complete.
Another possible challenge is to find the best printer. If I raise enough money, I will need to do a lot of research to find one that does a great job and is affordable. But hey, I'm a LIBRARIAN so research is a snap :-)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
