Clockwork Creatures: Commissions for Conservation is a campaign to create an over-sized, beautiful coffee-table style book full of illustrations of steam-punk inspired animals and short stories. Building off the success of Mike Makes Stuff’s ongoing Clockwork Companions series, this project gives backers the opportunity to commission their own favorite animals and even pets for illustration and inclusion within the book. With two different editions to choose from and tons of influence from the community, this is a great opportunity to influence the outcome of this first-of-its-kind project.
Clockwork Creatures will be at least 100 pages long, featuring a foundation of original illustrations both new and old, a selection of illustrations created in partnership with our conservation partners, and commissions and suggestions from backers like you! While there are a host of rewards available, the most important are the books and the commissions. We’re looking to raise $6,000 to cover printing costs, the cost of producing all of the rewards, and the hundreds (if not thousands) of hours that will go into all of the drawings and illustrations that will go into this book.
We’re offering two different editions of Clockwork Creatures, not including the digital PDF version. Every first edition copy will be numbered and signed, regardless of which edition you select. Our Basic Edition is a hardcover, 10”x10” book with a full color interior and a glossy casewrap cover that is very similar to your standard hardcover book. It features all the same vibrant and detailed illustrations that the other editions will feature, at a more affordable level. Our Deluxe Edition is a true collector’s item. A limited edition print, the deluxe edition features beautiful, soft imitation leather cover, brass-style corner protectors, hand-stained 160gsm endleaves and #70 lb interior pages for a fabulous tactile and visual experience. Both first prints will be numbered and signed.
In participation with Kickstarter’s Commissions Month, our campaign is offering the opportunity to get fabulous, unique illustrations in the book as well as for your home and office. Backers are able to select one of their favorite animals – including mythical creatures! – to be illustrated in this unique style, as a clanking, thumping clockwork critter, and included in the book. One level up, backers are able to get commissions of their individual pets! By supplying our team with photos of their favorite furry (or scaley, or feather or…) friends, you can watch them transform into a mechanical companion and be included in the book. If you have multiple selections (Species or Individual) that you would like to commission as part of this campaign, but do not wish to receive the higher rewards tiers, you may increase your pledge amount as below and receive additional commissions. $75 each per Species $125 each per Individual Creature
The only reason you need to help someone is that you can. With that and in mind, and with this project so heavily focused on our animal friends, I wanted to find a way to help animals as part of this book. I've partnered with a handful of really fantastic not-for-profits that are doing great work across America. It's my hope to use this campaign to share their mission with a wider audience and bolster support through outreach and community awareness. I'll be including illustrations and stories in Clockwork Creatures inspired by the work being done by each of these groups. In the rear of the book, I'll be including an un-illustrated version of the same stories so that interested readers can learn the real life tales as well.
I have some fantastic partners that I’m able to include in this book who do truly incredible work with their communities and with at-risk animals. Please check out the videos below to learn more about them and their fantastic work.
HAPPY TAILS – NATCHITOCHES PARISH HUMAN SOCIETY
The Happy Tails program in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana was founded in 2008 with the vision of creating a no-kill shelter that would rehabilitate abused and abandoned animals to ultimately transport them out of the area and into their forever homes. Located on the Parish’s Detention Center grounds, the Happy Tails program works with correctional labor to help care for their many needy charges. By helping to care for and look after the animals, inmates make great strides towards rehabilitation and reintegration. The Happy Tails program has been recognized by the Governor’s Animal Welfare Commission, and recommended as a prototype for other programs within the state.
HUMANE SOCIETY OF INDIANAPOLIS
The Human Society of Indianapolis (casually known as IndyHumane) is a household name for animal lovers in the Circle City. Providing a wide suite of services to the community, HIS is a pillar of the community and a boon to every stray, pet, foster and animal lover in the city. Whether it’s their foster program, their adoption center, the low-cost vaccine clinic, or the low-cost spay and neuter program, they’re here to help our furry friends, big and small. My own pup is a “foster failure” from their halls and I cannot loudly enough sing their praises.
THOROUGHBRED RETIREMENT FOUNDATION AT MONTPELIER
Situated on James and Dolly Madison’s historic Montpelier estate, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at Montpelier aims to care for and retire Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter. The reality is the Thoroughbred industry is made up largely of owners with only modest resources and current economics dictate that among all owners, no matter how responsible and well-intended, only a relative few are capable of maintaining even a single Thoroughbred once it is unable to earn its keep on the track. This is where the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at Montpelier steps in, providing a home, veterinary care and retraining services to help these aging animals. Partnering with correctional labor, they also provide an opportunity for offenders to do good work within the community and help turn their lives around. Fantastically, they have been able to retrain former race horses as show jumpers, companion animals, and even handicapped assistant animals.
ON WINGS OF CARE
On Wings Of Care is a truly incredible organization. A network of pilots, veterinarians and plenty of folks in between, OWOC provides rescue and relief assistance all across the country. From flying animals from high-kill shelters in the Southern US to forever homes across the country and in Canada, to ecological surveys and even humanitarian missions, the scope of their love is just so impressive. It's hard to know where to start, given just how much incredible work they've done. OWOC also works to prevent illegal poaching of whales, and with great white sharks and elephant seals in Baja, Mexico. As part of their ocean conservation work, they've documented damage of oil spills and other ecological disasters in the Gulf of Mexico. They've aided veterinarians in Galapagos with rescue, raise and release of small mammals and birds, and transported supplies and doctors to people in need from Alabama to Tibet!
Thank you! I cannot thank you enough for your support, your interest and your patronage as I bring this exciting project into the world.

Risks and challenges
The risks with a project like this are fairly minimal. I've priced out modest print runs for both the Basic and Deluxe editions, as well as all other backer rewards, to make sure that the project's goal accounts for them and my team's time. I've also tested out shipping options with the United States Postal Service to ensure that our quoted shipping rates will cover the necessary postage.
Having worked on numerous books before, I have lots of relevant experience to make sure this project moves along swiftly to completion. The more backers we get, the easier the economy of scale becomes and the the lower our already minimal risk becomes. As this is a commission based project, there will be a lot of man hours required to get this book completed, but this is hardly the first large book that I've put through to print, and is a style I am well-versed in.
The most likely cause of any potential delays are related to my labor as the illustrator, or vendor issues. Vendors have already been selected for most items included as rewards or materials that will be made into rewards, but unexpected supply line issues are always possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
