Slightly Jet Lagged : The Travel Sketchbooks of Mike Lowery
Oh, Hello. I'm Mike Lowery. An Author, Illustrator and big-time sketchbook enthusiast. I've been keeping a daily sketchbook for more than 20 years and I've carried them all over the world.
I've gone through my sketchbooks and collected some of my favorite pages about travel and am making a book out of them. This is what it would look like:
WHAT IS IT?
Slightly Jet Lagged: The Travel Sketchbooks of Mike Lowery (by Mike Lowery, featuring Mike Lowery) is a super-high-quality, full-color book with tons of drawings, comics, and notes from all over the world. It's 120 pages and hardbound. I mentioned in the video that I broke my tooth in the jungle in Cambodia. This is NOT a joke. Want to hear the whole story? BUY THE BOOK. (sorry I can't give away ALL the good stuff for free!)
Right now it will be at least 120 pages, but it could end up being longer. Why? The more people buy the book the more pages I can add (the more copies I print, the more the cost goes down!). I've always made travel a big priority for me and my family, and I've made comics and journaled in tons of places: All over the US, Norway, China, Japan, Germany (where my wife is from), Portugal, Iceland, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Russia...you get the picture!
I've been posting travel sketches on my Instagram feed for a few years at @mikelowerystudio and figured it was time to collect them into a book.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR.
I've written several books and have illustrated tons of books for kids and adults. Last year my collection of weird, doodled facts was turned into a book called Random Illustrated Facts: A Collection of Curious, Weird, and Totally Not Boring Things to Know. It made it onto an Amazon best-of list thing. I still draw random facts (almost) every single day and post them on instagram. I live in Atlanta, GA with my wife Katrin and our awesome kids. Oh, and I got to do some drawings for a Filipino food truck recently.
There are a lot of options over on that rewards menu over there, see which item is the best fit for you. You can simply pledge to buy a copy of the book OR you can add a limited edition Iceland or Japan print. I've also got a few custom levels where you can get art about your favorite city, state, country or whatever. There's even a reward where I will FLY TO YOUR COUNTRY and do a few days worth of journal drawings and posts on insgragram and WILL INCLUDE YOUR COUNTRY IN MY BOOK. With your name, of course. If you want your name on it. Want me to speak at your school or event? There's a level for that too.
Stretch goals will be set up throughout to make the book as amazing as we can. With enough backers, we can make it cloth bound and add pages. We can also add limited edition screen prints, and other fun stuff.
If you made it this far in my pitch, I just wanted to sincerely say thanks. I hope you'll consider backing this project! If you have any questions or realistic rewards I could add to the list, feel free to shoot me a message.

Here's a behind-the-scenes look (part one) of my scene from the video where I was getting a haircut. I was in "Hong Kong Barbershop" in Chinatown (NYC) and got another barber to film with my phone.
Risks and challenges
WILL THIS PROJECT ACTUALLY HAPPEN?
If you're asking yourself right now "Wait, is this one of the projects that won't actually happen because artists are notoriously flaky and not good with deadlines and money and stuff like that?" Well, first of all, uhh...why all the bad attitude?! Secondly, I've been working on books professionally for a really long time now and am not new to deadlines. The drawings are already done and scanned and just waiting to get printed. I've also already met with TWO different printers for the project. Why two? Again, the more books we print, the better our options are for printing, so I've lined up two possible printers.
Now if you're asking yourself, "Why does he need EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS to print a book?" I can answer that. To make this book as high quality as possible, I need to print a significant number of books. Trust me, I won't be getting rich off of this project, but it's something I've wanted to do for a very long time and 8k is roughly how much I'd need to do it.
Like all big projects, there could be unexpected hiccups along the way which means that the book could get delayed. I set a very conservative and realistic production deadline, BUT things might happen. If so, you'll stay informed along the way. If we get the book sooner than expected they will ship immediately. Do you think we just want them around the house?Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
