The plastic clingfilm on the solar panels is removable (but I will wholeheartedly agree with you that it is a major pain to remove). I'm going to work with the factory to see if we can get a less clingy film or do away with the film entirely.
As for the charging behavior question, that is a little more complicated. I've covered it a bit in this FAQ:
The wildcard is how much power is available in February where you live. If your ReadySet is getting enough power from the panel to charge each day, the ReadySet should not go into deep sleep mode. If the amount of available power is below the threshold to start charging, however, after 48 hours your ReadySet will go into deep sleep. You'll need to press the button again to wake it up and start charging (If there is enough available solar power).

One more quick question... is the plastic on the aluminum frame supposed to come off or stay on? I started to peel mine off, but it didn't come off too well.
I got mine back, but it doesn't seem to charge unless I am home to push the button. During the week, I place the panel in a sunny spot when I leave for work in the morning, but the battery has no energy when I come home in the evening. On the weekends, it charges if I push the button after placing the panel in a sunny spot. Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't it charge without me having to tell it to?

Hi, I like my ReadySet kit but I want to make sure that mine isn't impacted by the charging problem. A friend has a ReadySet that doesn't charge anymore and he was told that there is a firmware problem. I'm planning a trip and taking the ReadySet. How do I know if mine has that problem? Thanks.

My kit plus panels arrived, but not before an email warning me against charging it, due to a firmware bug. It's nice to have the unit, but I'm not looking forward to having to send it back (if that is required) and wait for it again before I can try it out. Nice packaging though.

Mike, Brian we can see you log in every day (just have to click on the see full bio link). Not asking for a Spielberg production on the update, just a few words as to how things are going. Yes, updates can include good and bad information but communication is key. Since you are outsourcing to China and national holidays occur in October (based on what other projects have said) you are already behind on your production schedule.
Many of the negative experiences on Kickstarter relate back to the lack of communication from the project leads. On the surface you have a fascinating project and the application for remote areas was a big reason for my support. But, without communication the backers get restless and thoughts turn negative.
It's now mid October without a peep on progress, ship dates, tracking, etc. . Just a quick update will calm the nerves of many of us - especially the winter campers among us. When you said October shipment for early adopters did you mean October 31st? If so say so. You have created such a buzz with this project and then near silence; an update is sorely needed. TIA
An update on the shipping would be nice. If you have production snafus/delays, please let us know.
Echoing Larry, even if a backer is in no rush (I, for instance, am in no rush) the Google Docs submission doesn't produce a receipt.
No word for almost 2 months from the project leads. So how are things going? Is production on track? Since you did not use the Kickstarter survey process but Google docs instead did you receive information from all the backers? How do we know our responses were received?
Since Kickstarter is not a store, but more of a process/journey, an update every 2-3 weeks is always appreciated. It allows the backers to get a sense of what is going on, and makes us feel as we are part of the successful outcome.

What about giving your backers a great deal for a third solar panel if they have already purchased the second at $95.00? I admire your project...and what you guys are doing to help the less fortunate in Africa very much...but perhaps the third panel for $50. Or ????
