Gothic Horrors are coming March 27th!

Posted by Mike Gnade (Creator)

I wanted to start off this update with some exciting news, the next expansion for Maximum Apocalypse will hit Kickstarter on March 27th.  This deluxe expansion will introduce 2 new characters, 2 new apocalypses, an insanity deck, day/night cycle, dividers for the Kaiju expansion, an expanded rulebook, new tiles, etc and much more of course as the game is stretched.  I'll be sure to post a preview link for backers here once the page is ready.  I'm really excited about the expansion and just got my butt whooped by the Cultist/Cthulhu set last night.  Here is a quick FAQ but feel free to ask more questions in the comments below:

Will the Core Game and Kaiju Rising expansion be offered as part of this Kickstarter?

Yes, the Core Kickstarter edition will be available along with the Kaiju expansion.

How can I get the Kickstarter Play Mats?

We will have them available and do another limited print run of them through this Kickstarter.

Will there be a big deluxe box to fit everything in?

Not yet.  We're already in pre-production on the next standalone expansion.  We plan on offering a big box with that campaign.

Are you fixing/changing/revising the rules?

We are going to offer an expanded rulebook with this expansion rather than an insert to go over all of the new game additions.  Hopefully we can address any rule clarification questions that we've seen over on BGG.  If you have any burning questions, rule clarifications, etc - I advise that you ask them over on BGG if they're not already asked in the FAQ that was put together over there since we are actively working on a draft of the new rulebook now.

Shipping Update

ShipNaked (CAN/USA/South America)

If you're in one of these regions and have a problem with your order, please contact ShipNaked directly at  They are very responsive and send me a quick email if they're missing your info and don't have your tracking info.  Canadians may still be in the orders queue, but I can tell you that for the most part this fulfillment queue is complete.

ShipNaked/Unicorn Games (AU/NZ)

Aussie backers definitely seem to be on a bit of a delay.  If you haven't received a shipment notification email or contacted ShipNaked and/or have a problem with your shipment, it does not hurt to contact them directly at If for some reason ShipNaked can't locate your order, they will contact me and I will take care of it immediately.

GamesQuest (UK/EU/ROW)

I am really frustrated with GamesQuest.  The last email that they responded to I sent on 2/22/18 and got a response on 3/1/18 (about a week). I have several more emails and questions that have gone unanswered.  I did some digging online in other Kickstarter/Publisher groups and have learned that they have been overwhelmed (which is probably why they sent the games out without play mats even though they waited to start shipping until the play mats arrived at the depot).  I've heard they are overwhelmed for primarily two reasons: first, they're fulfilling for CMON and this little game called Rising Sun. This issue is compounded because I've heard they are also changing/upgrading their warehouse/shipping software.  Unless you filled out the PledgeManager late in 2018, GamesQuest has your order information and you should have your games so I implore you to open a support ticket with them: and select "Rock Manor Games" as the publisher/creator.  They will not respond quickly to this ticket but hopefully if they see a lot of issues under the Rock Manor Games tag I can get their attention.

      Looks great!
Although pricing feels heavy at first. 3 characters and 3 apocalypses for 39$ as veteran& his dog vs. 40$ for the cure with 6 characters and 4 apocalypses AND ALL maptiles, tokens (not just monster ones)...
Sure, day/ night and insanity are new. But it feels overpriced at first. I hope there'll be plenty of stretch goals knocked down as with the main campaign to make that feeling go away.
Hope the card quality will be as excellent as with the core. Overall quality was great - only the dice were just average. Well done!
And I hope for additional characters (male and female as with the promos, would enjoy the missing sex for existing characters and new classes) and new map tiles. Additional missions for existing apocalypses would be super too.
Awesome you added standees and dividers for the promos. One more antidote would be cool to fix the one core apocalypse. :)
Can't wait to get my hands on this expansion!

    2. Carsten_de_1981 on

Just saw the preview page - glad to see the promo standees and dividers are already in. Great job!

    3. Carsten_de_1981 on

One more wish I have to add besides adding more dividers:
Standees for the Promos! That would be amazing!
Concerning the rules - would like to see kaiju in the book for example. And FAQ as well or get the affected parts adjusted. Would be awesome. Maybe ask for suggestions on bgg. Community will gladly help I bet. :)
Thanks for the great game - can't wait for the expansion.

@Mike - there is a very nice suggestion in one of the threads on BGG surrounding scavenging.

      Copy Pasta:

      1) [tile has no monster tokens and you have no monster cards]
      * 1st scavenge no test required
      * any other scavenge you must take a test. If you fail, add a monster token to to tile and SCAVENGE FAILED.

      2) [tile has monster token(s)]
      * Any scavenge you must take a test. Subtract -1 (as usual) from your stealth stat for any token on the tile. If you fail, draw as many monsters as tokens, add a new token to the tile and SCAVENGE FAILED.

      3) [you already have a monster card]
      * Any scavenge you must take a test. Subtract -2 from your stealth stat (for the monster in front of you as it's harder to slip for a few seconds) and also -1 for any token on the tile. If you fail, draw as many monsters as tokens, add a new token to the tile and SCAVENGE FAILED.

This would make multiple scavenging risky.

An easier variant was posted by the OP: 1st scavenge is always with no test. Every subsequent scavenge get a -1 per monster token on tile. If max tokens and you fail test you draw a monster.

      These work pretty well!

Looks awesome I’m very excited for the launch of the bew expansion.

FYI: I've gotten 3 emails from GamesQuest in the past 24 hours - so things seem to be moving now.

      Hendrick on

@Mike Gnade. Thank you for confirming. I like that rule. Awesome.

@Apocalypse Nerd - The Hunter will still be allowed to scavenge from any deck colour if he is on a scavenge space. But he will be limited to one scavenge action as will be the new rule.

Example: Hunter on red scavenge site - uses action 1 to scavenge from blue deck. And done. No more scavenge allowed. He will then have to move to another location where scavenging is possible.

    8. Apocalypse Nerd on

News flash not everyone cares about sleeves.

    9. DGenerateKane

Guess I'll wait for the campaign with a box to hold everything. The core box wasn't the least bit sleeve friendly. My expansion is just cards wrapped in a rubber band. I don't want to add another stack of rubber banded cards to my shelf.

    10. Apocalypse Nerd on

@Mike So How will this rule change effect the Male Hunter? Does it give them an extra scavenge on a tile that can be color? Or does it just allow the single scavenge per tile be any color?

    11. Mike Gnade 6-time creator on

@Hendrick: That is exactly right. So in your example you could start on a gas station. Action 1: Scavenge. Action 2: Move to an adjacent Farm. Action 3: Scavenge. The next player would be free to scavenge both of these locations immediately after your turn. I want to eliminate: Start on Gas station. Actions 1-4: Scavenge.

    12. Missing avatar

      Hendrick on

Going to try and incorporate that rule into my current game right now. You say scavenge a specific tile. Singular. Does that mean other tiles can still be scavenged multiple times or is it case of all tiles can be scavenged once only.

Example turn: User starts on a tile. 1 action goes to scavenge. 2nd action moves to another tile and does the encounters as normal. 3rd action scavenge again on that new tile. 4th action equip or rest.

      That about right?

    13. Richard Lindenmeyer

    14. Mike Gnade 6-time creator on

@Philippe: Yes the only explicit rule change is going to be that you can only scavenge a specific tile once per turn so if you're sitting on a gas station you can't scavenge 4x. You can still scavenge multiple tiles per turn. This rule would affect the promo Male Hunter as well since his innate ability is a scavenge from any color.

    15. Philippe Roth on

Mike, could you be more precise about the single rule change ? Scavenging limit ?

    16. Mike Gnade 6-time creator on

@Wisest: the fact that you said "system" makes me SOOOO happy

    17. Missing avatar

Tightening terminology (subjects and verbs) is huge to an expandable system like this.

    18. Mike Gnade 6-time creator on

@Elizabeth - that's fair, but as a small indie publisher nothing in the future is guaranteed. I would also like to point out that the rules are not being refined/changed - we are expanding the glossary and examples to make the current rule set clearer. There is only going to be 1 rule change to the current rule set.

    19. Elizabeth on

No offense, but knowing you are going to be offering another expansion after this which WILL come with a big box, will have even FURTHER refined rules (the biggest weakness of the original game) and will, almost certainly, include the ability to get Gothic Horrors during the campaign means there is no reason for me to back this next project.

    20. Johnny Freedom

So excited! We love the base game, it quickly became a regular on our table so much that it doesn't even live on the game shelf anymore, it just site on the desk waiting to be played every few nights. Please send old backers a message/update the second you drop the new campaign!

    21. René Schultze

@Mike: I have an issue open with GamesQuest but I never heard anything after I received a message that the game mat will be send out next week - this was on 9th February... :(

    22. René Schultze

I would absolutely love a box for all gaming components and sleeved cards :)
And as I see more expansions coming for this great game I would like a bigger box so that you can put the expansions in the box too. And let us have dividers for all factions, characters, etc.!

      Michaela Williams on

Hi I love this game and my only suggestion is dividers for all of the cards - I have a bunch of plastic bags in the box and it’s all a bit’s a lot easier to set up if the cards are sorted. Looking forward to the expansion!

Ahhh, Cthulhu. A man after my own heart (and wallet). Love the base game, will definitely back the expansion.

      *Previous characters
Stupid autocorrect and lack of proofreading...

    26. Adam Alderman

Hell. Yes. Day one pledge here, too!
      You had me at Cthulhu...

A cardboard standee for precious and new stretch goal characters would be nice too!

    27. Tobias Reinhard on

Will you offer other languages this time? Maybe as Stretch Goal?

    28. Missing avatar

      Instant pledge as well.

If there are card corrections/improvements for the second printing of the base game, please consider an add-on to get the updated cards.

And please make sure color matching against the first printing is up to par!

    29. somonflex

      Day one !

    30. SMYR

Yeh, still waiting for Sub Terra and the MA play mat. GQ should at least start to communicate openly. I could except waiting longer because they are overwhelmed but right now - with no open honest words/statements - I’m not a big fan anymore.

    31. Sunny Neuroshima on

Expanded rulebook! Yes! Please consider using a professional writer and editor. A good rulebook is so important but so many publishers place such a low priority on putting a decent rulebook together. One sign of a poor rulebook is when the FAQ is as long as your arm. That tells me the rulebook isn't doing its job.

Glad to know you've recognised MA's poor rulebook and looking forward to seeing the updated version.

@steven I've backed several games over the past months as well and allthough I don't share your experience (the games were delivered within the given timeframe), I've read comments from fellow-backers that were let down indeed. I think Mike hits the nail on the head in the update above - they were overwhelmed. I sure hope they recover soon, because KS is a BIG community to dissapoint.
@Goodsound: I think they also fullfilled GKR- Heavy Hitters, Sub-Terra and Get Off My Land (not 100% sure though)

    33. Goodsound on

@Mike - you‘re welcome. So I can also get insane due to many Zombies as well 😉 ?
GamesQuest do not only send out Rising Sun at the same time, but also Green Horde another big KS ...

    34. Steven Crane

I have backed a lot of games over the last 12 months and GamesQuest have let a LOT of people down over many Kickstarter projects

    35. Jason Cisneros on

      Nice! I'm down for this!

    36. Mike Gnade 6-time creator on

@Goodsound: Good question! Yes at the end of a round (after all players have had a turn) you go to the day/night cycle so yes it can be added to any scenario/mission.

    37. Goodsound on

Will innovations like f.i. day/night cycle also be applicable to the base game scenarios/apocalypses?

    38. Cory Kneeland on

      Instant pledge when it opens....

    39. Andy Quiles on

Please tell me we have a werewolf boss! Im so excited for this kickstarter, this is literally my favorite game right now. I have so many requests for content i'd love to see.

    40. Apocalypse Nerd on

      Second on improved bullet tokens.

    41. Mike Gnade 6-time creator on

Yes dividers for everything in the Kaiju box (Kaiju, Ranger, Scientist). Adding an antidote card is easier than fixing the mission cards lol so that's a good idea.

    42. Carsten_de_1981 on

Love the idea of the consolidated rulebook!
Would love to see more additional mini campaigns for the existing apocalypses.
Please confirm dividers for the Kaiju Expansion include the 2 characters (Scientist & Ranger). A few spares can't hurt so we can divide up to our own discression (p.e. played vs. not yet played Scenarios etc.)
And please give us the missing Antidote Card (although it is actually not missing, rather the Mission Setup Cards are wrong ^^)
