New Character: The Scientist Revealed

That's what I get for heading to bed early! I wake up to your breaking through more stretch goals.  3 more stretch goals down! The game will now feature a relaxing Oasis, a special promo boss card for Kickstarter Backers and a sweet monster token upgrade. You guys have been clamoring for it and I’m happy to reveal that another Survivor is on deck to join the fray in this next set of Stretch Goals:

---

New Tile: Military Base

Here’s another tile to make your lives a little easier. Reaching this stretch goal unlocks the Military Base tile. Monsters never spawn on this tile from a dice roll and when you enter it, you deal damage to any monsters following you. You can also scavenge from the red or blue decks while you are here. Don’t expect to see this tile included in too many scenarios though, it is meant to be a something you can add to any mission to make it a bit easier.

New Survivor: The Scientist

Remember that guy you saved in the first Zombie mission? Well he’s ready to join your party. This stretch goal is a Kickstarter Bonus item, meaning that it will be given free to backers but will be sold as an add-on or expansion everywhere else.

The Scientist is a unique and versatile class. His deck is smaller (only 20 cards) making him more susceptible to dying from reaching an empty deck - but his ability lets him ‘break’ some of the class rules and start adding other player’s cards and abilities to his deck. He is designed to be the best character to face the Alien threat. When he gets his laptop out, he can actually flip an entire player deck over so you know what card you are getting next. This is also great to use in conjunction with his innate ability to get a weapon or card you need quickly. He’s a bit squishy and utterly defenseless at the start, but he learns quick so a clever player can make the Scientist the hero of the party.

Wooden Ammo Tokens

Reaching this stretch goal will replace ammo cardboard punch-out tokens with wooden bullets.

Alpha Playtester Pledge

I am happy to officially announce that Alpha Playtesters will be receiving a prototype of the Scientist deck in their alpha copy. We’re hoping to receive more feedback on this particular character since he is ‘newer’ and has not been playtested as extensively and may need a few card tweaks.

Not everything is included in the picture above, but it does show off most of what you get.  Here is a full component list:

  • 4 Survivors + Corresponding decks (124 Cards)
  • 30 Monster Cubes
  • 2 white dice
  • 4 black hunger dice
  • 80 Scavenge Cards
  • All 35 unlocked map tiles (on card stock)
  • Scavenge Board (on card stock)
  • 50 Monster Cards (2 Apocalyptic Scenarios)
  • 4 Boss Cards
  • 60 Hit Point tokens (not pictured above - on card stock)
  • 24 Ammo Shards (not pictured above - on card stock)
  • 12 Poison counters (not pictured above - on card stock)
  • The Scientist Prototype deck (21 cards, not pictured above)
  • 1 large box

We may have a chance to add a few more extra goodies to this tier as we unveil more stretch goals, but this should give you a good idea what's included. Keep in mind that the mission logs and rulebook are not included and are linked to online.  Our goal is to finalize the written documentation with your feedback.

Such a good strategy gone out the window... ;)

@Kevin: Yes, Hunter can break the rules

@Stavros: If the monster deck is empty, you reshuffle it (including the boss card)

I guess I'll have to change the Scientist to be Player discard pile so you don't cheat. The intention is for that ability to buy more time.

Doesn't Hunter's Resourceful also break class rules (albeit only for Gear, not Instants)? The way I read that card (pnp version), Hunter can end up with Trusty Axe or Scalpel equipped.

Mike-inator, I have a question (well two questions):
If the Monster Deck is empty, do we reshuffle the Monster Discard?
      If yes:
If there is no Monster Discard to reshuffle when you would encounter a monster cube and replace it with a card, is the cube discarded for no effect?
      If yes: (OK three questions)
If the Scientist adds all the monster cards from the discard to his deck, could the survivors empty the Monster Deck/Discard completely and thus win by having no enemies left?

      :)

@Ethan: Yeah the intention is to give backers more exclusive stuff and a one stop shop to get it all by pledging. It's not that you can't get the KS exclusive stuff - it's just that it 100% won't be in retail.

Kickstarter Bonus stuff will be in retail as an expansion i.e. the Scientist may be a retail tuckbox mini expansion or part of another larger expansion if you guys unlock some more stuff!

I'm happy to see that your KS "Exclusive" means "not in retail version of game but still available via other means". :) I hate showing games to my friends/family, them loving it, and then not being able to acquire the same game themselves.

The only thing he's missing in his pocket is a slide rule. (Anyone else remember those?)

Cool SGs to come - even if there's no Amusement Park ;)

I was hoping you'd make the scientist playable!
But I have to point one thing out: that is not a scientist.
      That is an awesometist!
