Beware the Yokai!

Day 1 Recap

Wow what an amazing first day! In the first 24 hours, Gothic Horrors raised something like $67,000 to put that in comparison, the first Maximum Apocalypse raised only $7600 in the first 24 hours (it did launch against Gloomhaven’s 2nd Printing but who are we kidding it would have never beaten that).

As many of you returning backers know, I like to use updates to go over aspects of the game in greater detail. Since we just unlocked the Yokai Apocalypse, I thought I would  give you a peak at what this apocalypse has in store for you.

Beware the Yokai

This monster set was designed with a few ideas in mind. The biggest idea was to make many of the monsters warriors that could stand up and retaliate against the stronger survivors in the game (Ronin, Fireman, and Gunslinger). Giving them a counter ability sets up some interesting combat decisions where you won’t bother attacking an Oni because you know it will hit you back if you cannot kill it. They’re even more dangerous for the Ronin (who also has counter attack type actions) where she can inadvertently set off a chain of hits back and forth until something dies.

If the Ronin ends her turn in a defensive stance against a full health Oni, she's going to suffer 12 damage before she kills it...get It?

The trickiness of this counter mechanic is mixed with some high damage threats, poison, Life Drain and the biggest trickster of them all - the Kitsune.

Tengu are a flying annoyance and Kitsune want your stuff!

Of course no Apocalypse is complete without some threatening bosses…

Proven ability to deliver a product and good reviews probably helps with the funding speed..

To me, the Oni looks sad and bewildered. I think it's the furrowed brow that lends to that interpretation.
