A 100,000+ piece (approx 6' high) sculpture crafted entirely from LEGO, depicts a spectacular city in Odan called K'al Yne.

Please check up on the Update tab above to see progress on the model as well as helpful tips and tricks when building with Lego.

What is the Odan Project?
This will be an epic series of sculptures built entirely out of Lego, themed around the imaginary world of Odan. Each Kickstarter project in this series will help to support one very large sculpture. Pieces will range from castle-type capital cities – such as this first Kickstarter work  – to future works which cover fantastical nations of evil, beauty, exotica, spiritual/cultural centers and much more. Each model will be micro scale but super sized at around 6' high. The combination of building micro scaled pieces to this level of detail is very unusual in Lego builds, setting these works apart. Each work takes many hundreds of hours and tens- even hundreds- of thousands of Lego.

Detail of the model. Note: this is not a final image but work in progress.

For this Kickstarter project, I will finish the sculpture and photograph them beautifully (see below for other projects I've done). I'll create two gorgeous, limited edition fine art prints about 13" x 16" (signed and numbered) with certificate of authenticity and a letter from the artist (that is, me). Additionally, two smaller 4" x 6" hand embossed fine art prints will also be rewarded for most of the funding packages. Note, that the final images are not yet available for preview as the sculpture is only half finished. Also, after the work has been photographed, it will be dismantled and sections of the sculpture will be rewarded as part of the funding packages.

Packages that include parts of the model look wonderful in shadow boxes (not included) along with the 4" x 6" fine art prints. The sections – while sometimes small – are all precious one-of-a-kind elements that vary depending on their position in the model. Note, many of these pieces, particularly the larger city pieces/towers will not be offered anywhere after the Kickstarter ends. If they are not funded, they will be reduced to Lego rubble for another future project.

YOU tell ME how to evolve this city.
What you see in the video and as the main picture is only what I've currently finished – which is about 1/2 or so the final piece. The final piece will be much taller and fuller than pictured here so far. As I finish this work, the city will eventually tower above its current height and to each side of where the city currently stands.

Your funding will help determine how the capital city K'al Yne will evolve. More funding at the levels of the Farm Manor, Miller, Bailiff and Landlord packages will evolve the village area. The Priest, Bishop, Seer and Disciple packages raise the consciousness of this kingdom. Bureaucrat and higher priced royal/noble packages will build up the more spectacular parts of the city. The Beastmaster and General increase the military side of the city. Each funding will effect the storyline of K'al Yne. It should be a lot of fun to see how this grows! By the way, if you think of another package or object that would be cool to create, let me know and I might do it. :)

In order to make these models as exceptional as I believe they need to be, I need your help in acquiring Lego materials for the build. I would expect this work to go above 100,000 - 150,000 Lego pieces. While I have many pieces, I don't have this many on hand and often there are special needs for hundreds and thousands of identical bits that I don't have. Lego bits are only a few cents each (on average 6-10¢). But, when buying 50,000k or more bits, it adds up very quickly. Additionally, money donated will go to a few smaller matters, like a larger table to build on and tripod to photograph from. Money will also go towards paper, ink, printing and packaging/shipping.

Thanks so much for your support at any level!!

About Me
After graduating from Art Center College of Design 18 years ago, I've worked in NYC where I have been a graphic designer and artist. While I've worked with oil and digital painting in the past, I find working with Lego my new favorite medium. I've created and photographed a number of Lego works – the first three of which were part of the abandoned houses series. Below, you can see a few of them as well as the level of detail and drama that you can expect to find in these new Kickstarter works. You can read more or purchase these prints elsewhere.

The abandoned house series has been featured on Huffingtonpost.com, foxnews.com and Kill Screen Magazine. They were also part of a show last December at Gallery 1988 Melrose and are currently inaugural works in Boston's upcoming Museum of Realist Art.

What I love about Lego is the contrast between the stiff, mechanical, programmatic plastic pieces and the organic quality that can be achieved through advanced building techniques. Such techniques break through what is expected of this 'toy' and transforms it into something new and fresh. Additionally, through photographing these works, I can shrink down the sculptures into smaller pictures, which gain an incredible amount of detail.

Process
All that I use is Lego and Lego connections. That is to say, I don't modify the pieces in any way (for instance, paint, cut, burn etc), nor do I use any other materials for support or construction (for instance, tape, glue, paper, wood, etc). Pieces are legally snapped and connected as Lego intended. Additionally, I do not 'spill' pieces in areas to create texture – everything is attached. With the photographs, I use photoshop only to create backgrounds and adjust contrast and color balance. The models are exactly as photographed in all other details. (Note though that some of the objects will be sent in packages glued so that they don't fall apart in travel.)

The World of Odan
Depending on the success of first installment to the project, I will continue further with more models, which will expand on this universe. In this fantastical world, pure evil has taken hold of many nations. Here, there are a number of races – including a few humaniods – which have traditionally coexisted peacefully. Spirituality has evolved as fast as science. As a consequence, kingdoms in the light practice spiritual healing, animal communication and can travel parts of the universe with their spirit. The evil that has taken hold of many kingdoms, offers new powers in exchange for the light. These lands have grown dark and chaotic. Over 70 kingdoms extend into many climates and spectacular environments. These will be captured in future models.

The Seers of Odan
With the high level of spirituality, has evolved two disciplines within those practices. The first is organized religion, much as we know it. This remains primarily community based and is run by a hierarchical religious order.

The second component is run by an order known as the Seers. Their power comes from the spirits, both from Odan and from within each individual. Certain larger mammals and trees infuse the world with energy which can be tapped in by all individuals for healing, spirit traveling and other special powers. This branch of spirituality is more individual than community in nature and complements the religious order. Special crystals help to capture and focus powers which the seers carefully guard. They also train the population in these arts, administer healing and communicate with the great beasts that guard their kingdoms. So it is that the Seers' role can be divided by these distinct areas – those that heal, those that educate and those that protect.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

About the only risk is that it might take a month longer than anticipated. I've created and photographed a number of these large scale models and have a good idea how long it takes. But if funding is great, I will be adding extra sections to the model for an even more spectacular look! This might mean the model will take a little longer than anticipated to create. The benefit though would be photographs of even greater detail, resolution and drama.
