This session was born on the heels of a magical duo weekend at the Kitano, NYC in April of 2010 with myself and piano legend Larry Willis. Almost everyone in attendance that weekend urged me to record this duo project. So we did, less than 3 weeks later through the generosity of Hirsch Studios here in NYC, on one of Larry's favorite piano's, the Fazioli. I wanted to get this recorded while the music was still fresh in our minds and the magic was still in the air and without having to "sell" the idea to a record label. The selection of compositions, the length of the tracks, how I wanted the instruments to sound, etc, was all possible because it is a totally self-produced project.
The project is completely recorded, mixed and mastered. The mixing and mastering was done by a good friend and great saxophonist, Ian Hendrickson-Smith. Ian has been hearing me live for the past 15 years so I trust him to get "my sound" and he did. Ian also uses an interesting technique in which he transfers the mixed digital tracks to analog tape to enhance the sound, then back to digital for production. I think this process adds a richness to the overall sound that is missing from digital recordings.
I now need your help to bring this recording to production. The money raised here will be used to pay for the production of the CDs and digital distribution, studio time, mixing and mastering, artwork and graphic design. If we surpass the goal, that money will be used to enhance the finished product (better packaging, download cards, etc) and promotion.
