Erica, myself, and Xander are loading up the car next week (July 21st) and heading off on a road trip around California! We don't have a solid route mapped out, the plan is to make it up as we go along - heading through places like San Francisco, the Redwoods, Tahoe, the Sierras, Sequoia, Barstow... stopping to explore in all the small towns in-between, far away from the main highways .
All of this is fairly last minute in planning, the summer is going by fast and we want to do something special that we'll all remember - and we thought we'd find a way to share our road-trip with others.
Each of us will be making something during our trip to bring back home and share...
Erica takes roll-after-roll of film on any of trips that we take, whether we're just on a weekend trip or a full cross-country drive. She'll be taking detail shots of plants, animals, textures that catch her eye, landscapes, architecture and usually too many photos of our dog, Maeby. She would love to share a small part of our trip with you... The majority of the time she'll be shooting on her medium format Hasselblad or less-often with her 4x5 view camera, both produce lovely images, then the negatives are scanned and a digital print is made.
Xander is taking a summer class at our local nature-center here in the Verdugo Mountains - he spends his weekly meetings learning all about the flora and fauna of our area. Recently he learned how to press plants and also how to identify them. Armed with his new knowledge and his trusty California field guide he will pick you a beautiful specimen from a place on our trip, press it and create a postcard with a little note, and also identifying info for the plant.
I will inevitably be taking tons of video on our trip, I always have a camera in my hand these days - and I would love to share a 2-5 min vignette with you from one of our stops. Each vignette will be unique, and captured with full audio. No one will receive the same vignette, in other words - your vignette will be yours alone.
From All of Us
If you're feeling extra special you can choose the reward level that features a reward from each of us. All of the above, a pressed plant post card from Xander, a photographic print from Erica and a video vignette from Mike - a little bit of this and that from somewhere in California.
Risks and challenges
Well, we tried our best to keep this campaign simple - the things that we're sharing are all things we'll be making and capturing regardless. As for our individual things:
We made sure to put a limit on Xander's plant-pressings so he doesn't get overwhelmed by the project. We want to make sure this is fun for him.
Erica will be swamped with developing and scanning negatives after we get back from the road - but, we have a pretty good workflow down these days for keeping up with the large batches of film that come with any road-trip we take.
I'll be keeping most of my footage fairly organized on the road - so, after returning home from our trip, I'll be able to start pulling unique clips for people and sharing them (using either Dropbox or Vimeo) right away.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
