About this project
The Better Backpack is...
1 ) A Premium Backpack That's Built to Last a Lifetime. In an era defined by disposability, we designed a bag that’s built with tough, time-tested materials, and stitched together with precision.
2 ) Timeless. If you ever feel the need to part ways with your backpack, send it back to us for a 10% rebate and our pledge to recycle it. We want the materials to live on. Let’s make this bag timeless.
3 ) Minimal. We have combined a simple, clean appearance with neutral, muted colors - four in total - resulting in a backpack that’s fit for any era and any style.
4 ) Functional. 100% cotton canvas, heavy-duty water resistant lining, and a reinforced, padded laptop compartment mean style and substance were considered equally in our design.
5 ) Co-operative. Our mission was to build a better backpack – so we designed one. Now we need your help! Let’s make disposable design a thing of the past, and let’s do it together.
In recent years, fashion retailers have been moving designs from the runway to the rack faster than ever before - feeding a fashion cycle that appears to have no end in sight.
At MIJLO, we believe that fashion doesn’t have to be fast, or disposable, or temporary. We believe it should begin and end with a classic collection of well-designed essentials. And we’re starting that collection with a backpack – A Better Backpack.
Since we believe a product’s lifespan should be as timeless as its design - simplicity and sustainability were an integral part of our design process.
We’d love it if you kept this bag forever - it was designed with that in mind - but we want to ensure that if you ever part ways with it, we’ll be able to minimize the environmental impact.
Stitched inside of every backpack is an eco-tag. If you can’t pass your bag along to a friend or family member, we suggest that you send it back to us, tag intact, for a 10% rebate and our pledge to recycle it.
We’ll break it down to build another bag, or donate it to those in need. We want the materials to live on. Let’s make this bag timeless.
Join the Fight!
Share this campaign with everyone you know, and help us blaze the trail. It’s our mission to be at the forefront of sustainable design, and we’d love you to be there with us, leading the way.
Let's bring back the classic, well-designed items this industry was once built on - let's make disposable design a thing of the past - and let's do it together.
20 Ways to Lighten Your Footprint
No matter what your pledge, we’re going to give you a special item – an exclusive print that provides you with 20 simple ways to lighten your footprint.
Use it, swear by it, let it guide you, and when you’re done with it – plant it. Each print is constructed from seed paper – paper that grows when you plant and water it. Happy gardening!
Our Design Process
MIJLO's design team spent several months pouring over the tiniest details of our backpack, ensuring that our finished product was the sustainable, stylish bag we originally intended.
- Because of its time-tested reputation as a durable, weather-proof fabric, we chose 100% cotton canvas as our base material.
- High-quality nylon thread was stitched throughout each bag at 10 stitches per inch, reinforcing each and every seam to ensure that our backpack lasts.
- Fabric flaps run alongside zippers to prevent rain from seeping in, while heavy-duty water resistant lining was added throughout to ensure possessions stay dry inside.
- Four understated colors compliment a minimal design, reinforcing our desire to pair durable materials with a simple, stylish bag.
As part of our mission to promote sustainable design, we asked 100 global creatives to take photos of their essentials - a collection of items they can't live without.

Risks and challenges
We have spent these past few months smoothing out rough edges and ensuring that we have back up plans in place for our back up plans. That said, we know there may be a few snags in the months to come, and we’d like to be candid about any potential obstacles, including these:
THE EVENT OF OUTRAGEOUS DEMAND
This happens from time to time on Kickstarter, so we’ve made sure that our manufacturing partners are prepared to take on additional units.
We're shipping our products through the mail, which means there is general risk in the reliability of shipping companies. However, we'll make sure that we keep track of your order at all times and communicate its progress openly to you.
The staff at MIJLO has spent months upon months making sure that we get this right; that we’ve built something that’s going to last a lifetime. We’re aware that you’re a massive part of our mission, and we want you to know that we’ll do whatever it takes to be at the forefront of sustainable design. Thank you for all of your support and welcome aboard!
Shipping is included for North America for $39 backer level, and internationally for the $59 backer level. Just be sure to select the backer option that corresponds to your region, and you’re all set.
International backers will cover their own customs fees upon receipt of their bag.
The $129 level covers shipping for anywhere.
The backpack is 15 inches tall, 12 inches wide, with a depth of 6 inches. The front pocket is 8 inches tall (6.5 to the zipper) by 9 inches wide, with a depth of about 2 inches.
This all adds up to an overall internal volume of approximately 20L.
My 15” Macbook Pro fits like a charm. A 17” Macbook will fit, but it’s quite snug.
It’s worth noting as well that the pouch is designed in such a way that a smaller laptop will still fit comfortably without jostling around too much, but a really small laptop (like a netbook or an 11” Macbook Air) may be a little loose and bounce around a bit. Nothing to be concerned with, just something to keep in mind.
You can definitely put your backpack in the washing machine, but over time machine washing will contribute to wear and tear and soften the fabric. That’s not very timeless, so if possible, we recommend spot cleaning and hand washing.
Here are a couple of great resources for cleaning products made of canvas.
This is a bit of a tricky one. It’s definitely NOT waterproof. Very few things are, and it’s virtually impossible to make a backpack truly waterproof.
We are however comfortable calling our backpack water resistant, but bear in mind that that’s a bit of a subjective term. If you’re carrying your Macbook and you get caught in a bit of rain, be cautious, but don’t sweat it. If you’re heading out into a hurricane, you may want to leave the laptop at home. Or wrap it in a plastic bag or something.
Your MIJLO backpack will help keep your stuff dry, but be careful and use your best judgment.
When the campaign is over on December 27th, we’ll send out a survey so that you can select which color you’d like.
At the moment, the four colors are Off-White, Light Gray, Navy and Brown. We’ve just included stretch goals that, if achieved, will add a fifth and sixth color, Black and Olive.
