Have you ever lost your plants because you didn’t know how to take proper care of them?
We have and that’s what inspired us to come up with an innovative and fun solution!
The PlantSitter is a small portable device that makes sure your plants “stay alive” - no matter how exotic and demanding they are. It connects your plants to your smart device and basically enables them to “talk” to you every time they need something.
Our innovation will also enable you to check on your plants from anywhere at any time! Thanks to its additional features, it will also bring the relationship between you and your plants to a whole new level. With PlantSitter’s help, your plants will suddenly obtain a personality!
While it’s easy to buy a plant, it’s often difficult to take proper care of it. Questions like “how often should we water a plant, how much sunlight is enough, is the temperature okay?” go through our minds when we are trusted with taking care of a new plant.
The PlantSitter was designed to solve all those dilemmas for you. It achieves this with its 4 built-in sensors for measuring 4 values that are crucial for plants’ wellbeing:
- Soil Moisture
- Soil Nutrition
- Sun Light
The PlantSitter begins to measure all 4 values as soon as it’s inserted into the soil next to your plant.
The PlantSitter is then connected through Bluetooth to a nearby smart device equipped with our MiGrow app. A smart device begins receiving data from the PlantSitter shortly after its user has selected the type of plant. Our app starts monitoring a plant by interpreting the received data and making sure the values are within limits prescribed for that specific plant (based on MiGrow’s vast database on most plants known to mankind).
For example, if your plant doesn’t have enough water, our innovation will detect that and send you a message immediately, prompting you to act.
Besides interpreting data from a PlantSitter and displaying it to users, the MiGrow app is much more. It literally gives a voice and personality to your plants since every plant gets its own profile with a name and profile-picture!
It's up to users how they use our innovation when taking care of their plants. Users can set their daily schedules and tasks according to the MiGrow’s official database on plants; their own plant-growing experience; or other users’ practical experience published on the app.
Our app also enables its users to browse data in live mode as well as record mode. All the data collected from PlantSitters is stored on our BigData servers and users can browse it by hours, days and weeks. This makes our innovation a perfect research/learning tool as well as a fun accessory that makes caring for plants and gardening more interesting.
Furthermore, users can record their plants’ growth from the moment they have planted them into the soil and are even able to create a photo gallery that can be shared with other users from the community.
Imagine an online social community full of professional gardeners and typical plant lovers, sharing their experience and knowledge on growing all kinds of plants and always ready to help you with their precious advice.
Thanks to the MiGrow app's socialization function, gardeners and plant lovers are getting their own online interactive socializing place. Users will be able to share data, pictures and ideas with other users, make plant-loving friends worldwide，browse their plant's albums, post comments, and even follow the top gardeners to improve plant growing skills.
Moreover, we're currently building our vast database on plants known to mankind. This database will include all the information needed for achieving optimal habitats for plants and is essential for the PlantSitter to serve its purpose. All users will be able to update and contribute to this database!
Tracking every single plant in a room or garden full of different plants is entirely possible with our innovation!
Unlike the WiFi, Bluetooth is a short range wireless technology. It’s therefore impossible for your smartphone to exchange data with of-range devices. But, what if you would like to check on your plants from anywhere at any time?
To solve this problem, we have designed a PlantRouter! (Stretch Goal #1)
PlantRouter is a highly integrated device with built-in Bluetooth and WiFi transceivers. Once deployed, it constantly monitors all PlantSitters within range through Bluetooth while uploading data to the cloud server through WiFi at the same time.
With the PlantRouter, users are able to connect their plants directly to the internet through WiFi which enables them to check on their plants virtually from anywhere at any time!
Imagine going on a holiday for a week or two far away from your home and being able to check on your plants back home or in your office. Our innovation enables you to make sure your neighbor or colleague really is watering your plants as promised;)

The answer is definitely NO! The PlantSitter is much more than a simple gadget for gardening. Basically every person that owns one or more plants can use it. With our API, the DIYers and scientific researchers can easily put PlantSitters to a good use while tapping MiGrow’s database full of information collected by every PlantSitter in the world.
The PlantSitter is a highly integrated device which can measure several environmental parameters. DIYers can therefore use the REST APIs to read the data from our servers. This data can be applied to control other IOT devices in your house or garden.
For example, a Raspberry Pi computer can be programmed to get the illuminance readings from our servers and automatically adjust the light in a room.
Every bit of data collected by every single PlantSitter will be uploaded to our database. This data will be available to all users. For example, users will insert PlantSitters next to specific plants in one corner of the world and the researchers will be able to perform research of the specific plants’ natural habitats from another part of the world.
Like the Little Prince who loves and cares for his rose, your kids can also learn love & responsibility from taking care of a plant. We will offer a special version of APP for kids if our target of $120,000 is met (stretch goal #2). In this special version, the user interface will be more animated, and your plant will be more humanized while having its own voice. It will play with your kids through songs and stories to teach them how to take care of plants.
Currently, the PlantSitter and app are about 90% done. Our design team is investing a lot of time and energy into circuit design, software programming, data calibration and product verification. We have made our first prototypes with a 3D printer for research and testing purposes while we are already entering the early stages of cooperation with several high-quality manufacturers.

We are a group of young professionals who started the PlantSitter with no outside support and financial investments. Just an idea and strong motivation. All the resources invested in this project are our own. While the design and development does not take much to realize, the final stages - setting up the mass production and distribution will.
In order for the PlantSitter to see the light and reach its customers, we need initial funds to develop moulds, setup the manufacturing and testing environments, and start the mass-production. We have made the casings and a few other vital parts for our first few prototypes with the help of a 3D printer, but once we reach our target on Kickstarter, we will enter in a cooperation stage with a reliable manufacturing vendor to set up a high quality production line for our device.
We have calculated all the initial costs of manufacturing and have also taken into account any possible risks and unpredictable additional costs. All we need now for making this project happen are the funds.
Risks and challenges
We have verified all the functions and features of our solution, and already contacted some of the high quality manufactures in order to enter into a business relationship with them and make early preparations for setting up the mass production line. Considering that this is the first time for us to convert our ideas to products, we still face some uncertainties regarding the mass production phase (designing and initiating the standard manufacture process, verification process and quality control). Nonetheless, we will work hard on the manufacturing and production part of this project while keeping all our backers constantly informed about the progress.
