MIGHTY BOSS MONDAYS: Making Mighty No. 8!
Hola, Mighty Beckers!
Have a good weekend? Sure you did -- we all did: we shot past another stretch goal late Saturday, adding a Challenge Mode to Mighty No. 9! Our congratulations and thanks to each and every one of you!
But now, here we are on Monday. Ah Monday, you bittersweet mistress -- you bring a return to work or school, but also the return of our daily Mighty No. 9 updates, starting with a brand new Mighty No. boss reveal!
Once again let’s turn it over to game director Koji Imaeda and lead character designer Kimo Kimo to give us the inside scoop on our next (and final!) Kickstarter Mighty No. boss debut: Mighty No. 8!
PHASE 1: UNDER THE RADAR
Imaeda: The theme for Mighty No. 8 was set as "radar and optical camouflage" -- or I suppose you could also say "espionage and assassination."
If you’ve been following the boss designs up to this point, you might have noticed that the Mighty No. boss powers can be divided into two broad categories: One is elemental attacks like fire and water, and the second is more conventional technology like No. 5’s Gatling gun, or the radar and stealth you’ll see with No. 8 here.
This goes back to the premise that the Mighty Numbers were designed to compete in a robot gladiator tournament; we always had that in mind as we brainstormed -- what attacks would they use against their opponents? So we looked at each Mighty boss' offensive capabilities in one of these two ways:
1. Attacks tailored to destroy other robots; melting their internal circuitry, shorting it out with water, etc.
2. Attacks intended to cause damage in general; Gatling gun fire, sniper shots, etc.
We tried to come up with as many variations on both of these themes that we could -- which is how we came to the "radar and optical camouflage" theme for No. 8. We'd also initially planned for two of the boss robots to be female, and for one of them to have unusual or unexpected traits. It seemed like a perfect fit for No. 8, so I requested “it” be a “she.” Then I got the first artwork back from Kimo Kimo...
The conversation that followed went a little something like this:
Imaeda: I said to make it female!
Kimo Kimo: It’s just, from the description you gave me, it felt like this design just matched it so well...
Inafune: Whoa, hey, Mighty No. 8 is looking great!
And with that, the basic concept for No. 8 was decided, leaving No. 3 as the lone female Mighty No. boss. I'll let Kimo Kimo take it from here:
Kimo Kimo: Mighty No. 8 was actually the first boss that we had a theme set for. The initial description said it would be female, but when I saw the word "radar," I was really enamored with the idea of attaching an E-2C Hawkeye-like dish (as a hat). Then the other note about optical stealth-camouflage had me thinking of a sniper, so I added the feeling of a brooding gunman, like something right out of an old Western. He has weapons built-in all over his body -- this design even had a detachable leg cannon he could give the other Mighty Numbers to use as a bazooka!
PHASE 2: INAFUNE WOULD GIVE HIS RIGHT ARM FOR...
Upon seeing the design above, Inafune sketched his own general outline and chimed in with some ideas:
Inafune: For a design like this, let’s have him wearing pointy Western boots with spurs. Also, in the initial Kimo Kimo design, his right arm is obscured, but that gives me an idea: let’s add a little more detail to the upper part of it, and make it clear that the arm has been blown off, but he's chosen not to repair it. It’s a sign of his total confidence -- he’s saying he can fight just fine even with only one arm!
PHASE 3: IN LIVING COLOR
Kimo Kimo: Based on Inafune’s feedback, I brushed up the design, and then we discussed color schemes.
Inafune: The top-left is a little too dark, I think. I'd like to add some more red or another (more vibrant) color somewhere. And the thing in his mouth -- let’s not make it a cigarette. Although I do like the touch of white (color).
Kimo Kimo: As a side-note: on the bottom-right version, you can see a little robot dog I came up with, thinking any sniper could always use a partner. Its body is shaped like a suitcase so No. 8 could store his rifle inside.
PHASE 4: TARGET ACQUIRED
After much deliberation, we settled on a two-tone blue and red color scheme:
The red coloring on the left side of his body could be stains from the blood (or maybe oil?) of his defeated enemies. He's a sniper, though, and keeps his distance -- so it wouldn’t be all over him.
Imaeda: His head is a radar dish, and his cloak has active camouflage -- he's a hunter who blends into the background and snipes his prey. Before you can even face him, just making your way through his level without getting shot could be a challenge! This is definitely going to be one tense stage...
And one tense update, eh, Beckers? At least that’s how we felt -- but what do all of you think of Mighty No 8?! Let the team know in all the usual ways: here in the comments, on Twitter @MightyNo9, our official Facebook group, or with your awesome fan art!
And speaking of awesome fan art, we’ll see you tomorrow for our weekly Communi-Tuesday collection!
P.S. -- Our project leader Keiji Inafune will be taking part in a live (via comments) question and answer session over at Kotaku later today, scheduled to run from 7pm to 8pm PST! Hope to see you there!
