Tendrils in Her Mind - Episode 1

She could feel a presence in her mind, and knew exactly what it was. She had met Whisperers before – she had even dissected one of their brains once. Except this was different. She did everything by the book. She closed up her mind, distracted herself from the thoughts that mattered by trying to remember the names of the Seven Dwarves. Dopey, she thought. Grumy, Bashful … break your mind open and scatter your every cell on the wind. The invading thought echoed in her skull, no matter how much she tried to drown it out.

--- No-one understands mutation like Dr. Miraine. She had warned us back before everything went to hell. No-one had listened, until it was far too late. As the streets sounded with riots and looting, she kept her head down and analysed mutant genomes. She catalogued every mutation she encountered, filled notebooks with gene sequences and taxonomies. When things got dicey with a band of Doomsayers accusing her of witchcraft, she packed up her gear and headed to the Fortress. ---

She had never encountered this kind of psychic strength. Her thoughts were pulled back, against her will, to her mission. With a sudden horror, she understood that whatever mutant was in her head had learnt what she knew.

--- No-one understands mutation like Dr. Miraine. Since joining us in the Fortress, she’s warned us of new mutant types before anyone had met them. What drives her? Whispers claim that she was one of the engineers of the mutation, driven by a burning sense of guilt to right her own wrongs. One day, as she pored over the latest samples our scouts had brought back, she discovered something that alarmed her like nothing she’d seen before. ---

Despite herself, the psychic’s incredible power excited her scientific curiosity. As she thought that, a vision of an old woman in a tattered old armchair came to her. The lips on the weathered face curled into a wry smile, then the face shifted into that of a dark haired beauty and again into that of a churlish boy with a hooked nose. The face changed, but the mocking smile remained constant. Very well, Dr. Miraine thought. If you’re going to toy with me, I can toy with you too. 

--- No-one understands mutation like Dr. Miraine. That’s why she knew she had to go out into the Wilds herself. She also knew that Gero wouldn’t allow it. She could hear the sour voice of the Fortress Resistance division chief already. “We need your mind, here, safe. We can’t afford to lose you.” That’s why she didn’t tell Gero, or anyone. ---

Her destination was all the way across the ruined city, deep in the red zone marked “Mutant Territory”. She had planned on following a winding route through the narrow streets of the old town, staying out of sight. Now, her mutant antagonist knew her plan. Was there any point in being stealthy? A couple of blocks east, 30th November Avenue cut through the old town in a straight line right to her goal. Would it be better to opt for speed and risk the open road? Feeling the psychic scrutinize her every thought, she made sure not to decide, one way or another, until the very last moment.

What should Dr. Miraine do?

i) Stick to her stealthy route through the narrow streets of the old town, and risk the psychic’s wrath?

ii) Change course and cut straight down 30th November Avenue, and risk being spotted by mutant gangs?

      i vote 2 from movies ive seen you dont want to mess with a psychic, plus its psychic its going to know your there even if you sneak it can sense you. id rather go on the path and risk then a almost sure thing. :{

      II - sounds also like some athletics (& maybe even a fast talk/bribery) test, to avoid pure combat ;-)
