Stretch Goals Map
Darklands: Monstrous Mounts is a fantastic little Kickstarter project from Mierce Miniatures designed to fund at least one 30mm scale miniature that provides you with a mighty warlord riding a huge monstrous beast, such as Erebius on his Behema, below!
Backing Darklands: Monstrous Mounts is a great opportunity to grab one of these fantastic centrepieces for your Darklands host (or indeed any fantasy army or miniature collection), one that will dominate the tabletop both visually and in game terms as well as introduce imaginative new miniatures to flesh out the various kindreds of Darklands - giving you further variety of choice as well as providing an awesome miniature to assemble and paint up!
Darklands is a tabletop skirmish wargame in which YOU command the hosts of man and beast that your ancestors once did for glory, power or simple survival.
You can play Darklands with all of our amazing miniatures, including our incredible monsters and anything produced by this project, in a wargame designed specifically for them in a setting that you already know a lot about... for the lands of darkness, the "dark lands" as we call them, are in fact the north and west of Europe and of course the sunken lands still remembered, yet no longer seen, from ancient times.
Intrigued? Have a look at the bottom of this project's page for more information on Darklands the wargame!
There's only one reward to go for on this project, thus making things very easy indeed - and that's "MONSTROUS MOUNT", of course!
Fairly obviously, only one monstrous mount is available at the start of the project, but we do hope to add a couple more, and possibly other miniatures too, if that total progresses well.
Further stretch goals will be unveiled as the project progresses beyond our initial goal. Keep checking this project page and our updates as time goes by - there's bound to be more stretch goals!
Erebius on Behema
Ciniod on Aurogg
Ágriosávra on Sávrakh
Beb on Pig-Bog
Blunt-Claw on Goz-Horror
Birna on Fellhrafn
It must be noted that you MUST NOT pay for shipping as part of your pledge for this project. Shipping will be charged in the project management phase, which will occur on the Mierce Miniatures website after the project ends. This ensures that shipping fees are charged correctly for everyone.
It's worth re-iterating this in big letters:
DO NOT ADD SHIPPING COSTS TO YOUR PLEDGE!
We will be continuing our use of shipping waves from the Darklands: First Edition II project, for some miniatures produced by this project can be sent in earlier waves.
Your rewards will be shipped in Shipment Waves, as indicated under each stretch goal or reward. Here's a rundown of what is shipping when:
- Shipment Wave 0: As soon as possible, depending on how many orders there are. This shipment wave includes existing miniatures - those that are already available from our back catalogue - when you manage your pledge.
Shipment Waves 1, 2 and 3: Included for completeness' sake; these were for items from Darklands: First Edition, and some waves have now been fulfilled.
- Shipment Wave 4: November 2014.
- Shipment Wave 5: February 2015. Erebius on Behema, Brontull, Ciniod on Aurogg, Oso, Ágriosávra on Sávrakh, Krekkek, Blunt-Claw on Goz-Horror, Back-Cracker, Beb on Pig-Bog
- Shipment Wave 6: April 2015. Birna on Fellhrafn, Vaenhildr
This list will be updated as each stretch goal is unlocked.
In the post-project management phase, in the Kickstarter category on our website where you select the items you want, there will be Shipment Wave Items that correspond to the Shipment Waves outlined above. You MUST purchase at least one of the Shipment Wave Items - usually the Mandatory Shipment Wave item. The Mandatory Shipment Wave for this project is Wave 5.
The first goal of this project, Erebius on Behema, is scheduled to ship in February 2015 - Wave 5 (the Mandatory Shipping Wave); and then each stretch goal after that could be shipped as part of Wave 4, 5 or 6.
SHIPPING TIMES MAY SLIP
Please note that shipping times do depend on how much this project is funded. If we get a lot of money from this project, it's very likely that shipping dates will be shifted further back simply because of the time involved in casting miniatures and packing them.
Thus, shipping times will be fairly dynamic throughout the course of the fulfilment period - but we'll keep you all informed throughout, of course.
The most common shipping questions for Darklands: First Edition II are answered below.
- Can I have everything sent in one package? Yes. If you want to wait for EVERYTHING you've pledged for to be sent to you in one shipment, you ONLY need to purchase the Mandatory Wave 5 Shipping item. For example, if you have a Wave 5 item and two Wave 6 items, purchase the Wave 5 shipping item; the Wave 5 item and Wave 6 items will be sent in April.
Can I get existing stuff as quick as possible? If you want already available items to be shipped as soon as possible after the project ends, purchase the Wave 0 Shipment Wave item. You still have to purchase the Wave 5 Shipment Wave item if you have items from Waves 5 and 6, however.
What if I've only purchased Wave 0 items? Then you don't need to purchase the Wave 5 Shipment Wave item. Just purchase the Wave 0 Shipment Wave item.
What are Waves 4 and 6 for? So that items from particular waves are sent when they become available. For example, if you have a Wave 5 item and two Wave 6 items, purchase one Wave 5 Shipment Wave item and one Wave 6 Shipment Wave item; the Wave 5 item will be sent in February, and the Wave 6 items will be sent in April.
Post-project shipping costs will be fairly simple, for they are tied to waves. Each Shipment Wave - including the mandatory wave - will cost you:
- UK - £3.00
- EU - £7.00
ROW - £10.00
Note, here, that NO shipping is free (including to the UK) for any shipment wave.
Also note that NO shipping costs can be combined with earlier waves from previous projects. Whilst we can combine items from this project with items from previous projects into one package or shipment, combining shipping does not reduce the extra weight in items from this project (or existing items), nor reduce the amount of packing time and packaging material expended!
Now, you can wait for all of your purchases to be produced before we ship them, of course, as this will only incur one shipping charge. If you don't wish to do that - i.e., you want your stuff as early as possible - we must ask you for the shipping cost of each wave.
Thus, if you have purchased miniatures from a stretch goal produced after the units, it will cost £3 to ship any or all of the miniatures from that stretch goal within the UK separately from another wave.
It is the year 650, as the Christians note it, and the darkness that has engulfed the world since the Romanii betrayed the lands of the north and west only intensifies with each passing year. Established kingdoms and ruthless overlords war with each other even as they are raided by murderous pirates, once-slaves and northmen, and the brooding threat of the ice devils of the sea is matched only by the malevolent power of the inheritors of the ancient realms. In these lands of darkness only the strongest prevail in a never-ending struggle for survival against the bestial horrors man both brings to war and creates for it, and yet the greatest threat of all is perhaps the nature of man himself...
The amazing Darklands: First Edition rulebook cover artwork by Stefan Kopinski!
Darklands is a 30mm scale tabletop skirmish wargame set in the year 650AD of our own world, in and around the north and west of Europe, in which YOU command the hosts of man and beast that your ancestors once did for glory, power or simple survival.
Created by some of the best artists and sculptors in the world and manufactured in the finest quality polyurethane resin in-house by Mierce Miniatures, the Darklands 30mm scale miniatures range enables you to play a skirmish wargame with all of our amazing miniatures, including those incredible monsters, in a wargame designed specifically for them!
The lands of darkness are in fact the north and west of Europe and of course the sunken lands still remembered, yet no longer seen, from ancient times; for Darklands is set in the year 650 AD, where civilisation was very different to what it is today...
The Albainn represent the people the Romans called the Pictii, the Painted, who inhabit the far north of modern-day Scotland. The Angelcynn are the Angles that settled the north and east of Britain and eventually gave their name to that kingdom, England. The Brythoniaid are the original Britons, pushed back by the invading Anglo-Saxons to the north and west of the land, and now called the Welsh. The Byzantii are the remnants of the Roman Empire in the east, the Byzantines, who have allied themselves with the enemies of the one god - the Infernii - to reconquer the lost lands of the western empire.
The Fomoraic represent the evil Fomorians, the devils from the sea bent on conquering the lands above the water at any cost and whose leader, Baalor, has based himself on Toraigh, the Tory Island of the north-west Irish coast. The Khthones are the once-slaves of Atalantia, a race of lizards and reptiles bound by cold blood to destroy their enslavers, the Atalantes, and to find lands of their own in Europe. You will know Atalantia as Atlantis, situated off the coast of Ireland and Britain in the dark lands. The Norse are our own northmen, vikings if you will, come to conquer the soft lands of the west in their longships from scandinavia. The Ysians are the Cornish (Kernow) and Breton (Ys) peoples who have turned their backs on their fellow Britons to follow their own path.
Darklands is played by two or more players who each control an army - called a host - of units containing warriors with varying capabilities and functions.
Each host is commanded by a general, who represents the players upon the battlefield, and each unit is commanded either by the general himself or by the general's commanders.
To play Darklands with our fantastic range of miniatures, you need rules of course - and whilst the full Darklands: First Edition rulebook is not yet available until later on in 2014, you can still play the game with our Darklands QuickStarter Rules, which you can download right here!
As well as the QuickStarter Rules, you'll also need the Muster Rules (which show you how to build a host) and the various Kindred Musters (which give you all the warrior profiles for every single miniature we have produced or will produce).
The current PDF version of the Darklands QuickStarter Rules - v10.6 can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.
The QuickStarter Rules are living rules and do change when necessary, and if they change during the course of this project we will update this link.
You can download the current PDF version of the Muster Rules, v2.3, by clicking on the link below.
The Muster Rules will always be available for download and will always be living rules.
A Kindred Muster, what we call an army list, gives you the blocks you need to build a host of a particular kindred for Darklands. It includes all of the different unit types available to you as a general wishing to create an army, in the shape of warrior profiles.
The kindred musters given below include all of the warriors unlocked by our projects (apart from this one) so you can check exactly what you're getting for your money in game terms.
- ALBAINN MUSTER v1.6
- ANGELCYNN MUSTER v1.11
- BRYTHONIAID MUSTER v1.7
- BYZANTII MUSTER v1.2
- FOMORAIC MUSTER v1.9
- INFERNII MUSTER v1.1
- KHTHONES MUSTER v1.5
- NORSE MUSTER v1.6
- VRAS MUSTER v1.5
- YSIAN MUSTER v1.8
- SELL-SWORD MUSTER v1.4
No doubt there'll be a few errors or typos - feel free to tell us about them!
Upon each profile is a handy pronunciation guide (based on the Wikipedia Pronunciation Respelling Key) under the warrior's title and, at the bottom of each profile, a suggestion on which miniature from our range to use as that warrior on the battlefield.
Whilst all of our kindreds have at least one Darklands miniature to represent the general and at least one to represent a commander, very few have miniatures representing powerful warlords riding monstrous beasts. This is where Darklands: Monstrous Mounts comes in, of course, for the miniatures produced by this project combines those powerful individual miniatures with the ability to command hosts effectively, either as the general himself or as a commander.
The structure of a host in Darklands is quite different to many other wargames, you see, for whilst the general can command some units by himself, once a host becomes quite large it proves to be very difficult for him to control all of them. Thus, generals can call upon commanders - individual warriors, perhaps nobles, princes or other champions of stature - to command more units for him in commands of their own. By issuing orders to those commanders as he does his own command, the general can control much larger hosts than he would be able to on his own.
So, by combining your general or commander with a monstrous beast, your host has become more efficient in terms of how it is built - for a ridden monstrous beasts' Ubiquity is ignored, and this may enable you to include some very different Rare warriors!
Fought between Tim Fisher and Jamie Wright, this 499 gold Encounter shows off the various strengths of infantry and those of monstrous infantry and monstrous beasts as they clash upon the battlefield. As you can see, it was pretty close!
Note, here, that both Tim and Jamie are using a quicker version of the "Shooting into Combat" rules which were used during demonstration games at Salute 2014, and are not the same as those in the QuickStarter Rules.
As well as the interview, Tim also took the time to work through a few rules and general Darklands principles on video so that people get a good grasp of what's going on.
The video is extremely helpful to a Darklands beginner, so if you fancy playing Darklands, have a watch!
We already have a huge amount of miniatures in our Darklands range, which you can see in full (and purchase) on the Mierce Miniatures website.
Even so, we think it's worth showing you a few spectacular miniatures from our Darklands range, simply because you'll see immediately what Mierce Miniatures and the artists, sculptors and painters we use can achieve!

As you can see, our miniatures are simply stunning works of art!
As most of the miniatures you are pledging for are just concept art at the moment, it's worth showing you what you can expect after the project's funding has been fulfilled, and how close the resulting miniatures are to the concepts themselves.
Take Qaano, Srónax Untain, for example, funded by our first Kickstarter project, Darklands: a World of War. It began as a superb concept by Des Hanley. We gave the concept to master sculptor Allan Carrasco, who produced an amazing sculpt matched only by the paintjob provided by Sébastien Picque - not forgetting, of course, that he painted one of our own resin casts!
The progress of every miniature funded by our Kickstarter projects follows a similar path. We update our projects every Friday with work in progress images of sculpts as well as painted versions of the finished miniature (not to mention project fulfilment news of course).
We care about the cast that you get - just have a look at the detail held on Carrowek of Carn Dhu, shown at 72mm - approximately three times the size of his actual cast height!
IMPORTANT: all miniatures are supplied unassembled and unpainted, and each comes with a bespoke round plastic base of appropriate size, ranging from 30mm for infantry through 40mm, 50mm and 60mm for monstrous infantry and finally 80mm, 100mm and 120mm for our larger miniatures.
A good friend to us, Ryan Smith, has compiled a fantastic article on his website that shows off the scale of our miniatures!
Here's a comparison of our humans:
...and our monstrous infantry:
...and our largest monstrous infantry:
...and one of our smaller monstrous beasts:
...and one of our larger monstrous beasts:
...and finally, our biggest miniature yet (at least, in terms of bulk), Krull:
There's much more, of course, so head on over to Ryan's blog to see the article in full: Ryan Smith's Scale Article
So if you're wondering quite why our larger miniatures are so expensive, now you know!
Risks and challenges
With three highly successful Kickstarter projects concluded, one of which having fulfilled 99% of its rewards and another around 33% through, we believe this project has virtually no risks attached to it. Just ask the backers from those three projects, many of whom believe they were the finest Kickstarter projects they had ever been involved in! We keep everybody in the loop with project updates every week, too!
The team behind Mierce Miniatures have been creating and manufacturing miniatures for a number of years now and have produced tens of thousands of resin miniatures - some of which are incredibly complicated to make - over that time. Long experience in the wargaming industry coupled with an in-depth knowledge of the logistics required to bring miniatures to market ensure that we will be able to deliver on every single pledge exactly on time - if not earlier!
All that being said, sometimes those gremlins work as hard as we do too, but if there are unavoidable delays anybody who pledges will be the first to know about them via an update to the project. Many of the miniatures you can pledge for are already being manufactured but for those that aren't, it must be noted that the artists and sculptors we work with are genuine professionals and work very hard to meet their deadlines.
We are not dependent upon another company in a country on the other side of the world to manufacture our products - they are all made and packaged on our premises and so we are very confident we can deliver on all of the pledges with no problems whatsoever.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
