Midship Garage is a web-based small business, owned and operated from Southern California. Midship Garage has gladly served the MR2 community since 2016, re-introducing otherwise discontinued cosmetic styles. Producing a few first-of-their-kind products (made in USA) for the MR2 Spyder platform, such as a shrouded oil cooler kit mounted to the engine compartment, as well a dual fan with cooling shroud mounted to rear deck lid.
Introducing the MR-430 Headlight
A project spanning several months of R&D time, the goal was to upgrade the MR2 Spyder headlight to offer the style and functionality of an OEM headlight, for the modern age.
A few criteria were set in place for the project:
1. Include a true daytime running light.
2. Include a replacement projector low-beam with ancillary driving light.
3. Provide a user-friendly wiring solution.
After some initial brainstorming it was time to commit to a design. The Mark I design proved challenging due to the original turn signal and overall housing shape. The next viable option was to add a curve to the design. The headlight housing was scanned in to begin over the course of several weeks.
Coming back to the project after a month or so of switching gears for wiring research, the design was improved for the Mark II lens.
The Mark II lens felt closer to an OE finish and after fitting the prototype, the fitment was great, but still left a few minor improvements to make for the final Mark III design, such as smoother curve angle and a tapered backing to the lens for a better enclosure of the switchback and smoother diffusion of light compared to the prototype. The OE assembly (housing and lens) used will be furnished brand new from Toyota.
Retrofits are commonplace, however, this is not your standard retrofit. "But, can't I just hire the guy who does retrofits downtown?" Sure, but he (or she) will end up charging more after burning through a few days worth of hourly rates just to get started. Compared to those on the market, the MR-430 assembly stands out. The project as of now...
The MR-430 headlights are assembled in the US and have been tested to include all original functionalities. From daytime running and turn signal, to low and high beam, upper ancillary filler light and DRL dimming function. All necessary functions are retained, with the additional of a separate true daytime running light and a projector in place of the original turn signal, for an optional three-beam configuration. The supplied headlight assembly will be Brand new as well. After countless hours or research and design of the custom harness, the process has been made easy for you, with a total average install time of 30-45 minutes. That's it!

Risks and challenges
This project was not without its challenges. To provide a plug & play harness for both pre-facelift and facelift MR2 Spyder models was no easy task, and testing each produced kit for functionality will be time consuming, however this is necessary to ensure confidence in each set of headlights which will be shipped. The legality for the headlights was also a hurdle and the most important one to overcome. Ultimately, the configuration will use LED lighting for reliability and ease of replacement for the user. The low/hi beam projector along with ancillary light outputs at good amount of light over the original halogen used from factory, but does not impair oncoming motorists.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
