About

You can now download the free pre-alpha demo on IndieDB, Itch.io or Steam!

"I’m a 90s kid who didn’t get the chance to know the fantastic 80s. Starxium 20XX is a tribute to those fantasized years when everything seemed just fine, with lots of vibrant colors, bright neons and dreamy synths."

Sunset over the sea
Sunset over the sea

Starxium 20XX takes place in a retro futuristic world with an 80s aesthetic, neon vibes and dark blue nights. Did you ever dream of driving fast on the highway, leaving a big tron-like light trail behind you, listening to good old synth music such as synthwave, retrowave or vaporwave? This is the place!

Dashing through the night
Dashing through the night

Starxium 20XX is a capture the point (your team needs to stay on a point and repel your opponent), where the point is a moving convoy that runs at 200km/h on the center of a big highway. It's not a racing game.

Starxium 20XX is a multiplayer game made for esport. The main game mode is played with 4 players versus 4. You'll need some strategy and good communication to fight the enemy team. Or if they're just next to you on the couch, just push a random button on their controller!

Gameplay

The way you play Starxium 20XX may be a bit different from your other car games. The goal is to be agile and play with your teammates, not to be the fastest and take close turns. Here’s some of the controls of the car.

Manufacturers

Everyone gets the same car but what you do with it is your business. And you can totally customize it, not only the skin, but everything from the wheels to the motor, from the chassis to the battery, and so on.

Vaillant - French Transmissions Company

Every time you play a match until the end, you get the chance to drop an equipment crate. Crates are free to obtain and free to open! Every crate comes from one of the 21 manufacturers of the game.

Burning Meteor - USA Wheels & Tires Manufacturer
Burning Meteor - USA Wheels & Tires Manufacturer

Each manufacturer represents a country. The current planned ones are: USA, Canada, Germany, Australia, Russia, Japan, Italy, France, China, United Kingdom, South Korea, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Poland, Portugal, Swiss and Belgium. 9 are missing.

Yunitsuko - Japanese Electronics Provider

Each manufacturer works on a specific field. For example, the German manufacturer produces motors, the Spanish one builds suspensions, and the Japanese one creates electronics. Every components worth the same! You can get a battery that can store more energy but takes longer to charge, for example.

Tuijin Wu - Chinese Suspension Corporation

There are 9 components that can be changed: motor, battery, wheels & tires, chassis, brake, electronics, gyroscope, transmission and suspensions. For each component, there are 3 different manufacturers. Be sure to build a consistent combo with your team.

Kobra Tech - Australian Chassis Builder

Here are all the 18 manufacturers logo already done. Try to recognize the countries, it shouldn't be too difficult!

Modes & Map editor

Starxium 20XX is developed with the intention of making it an easily moddable game. Tools are available for you to create your custom map effortlessly and share it on the Steam workshop. For now, two modes are planned, and a script language for you to invent your own mod should come up after the beta.

Here's an overview of the map editor. It will come with its own interface once implemented in the game.

Stuntman - Solo mod where you need to perform as many aerial tricks as you can in 99 seconds, in a very small map that looks like a skate park.

Apocalypse - Battle Royal where every player needs to stay in a very big zone that gradually shrinks around the moving convoy.

The soundtracks in Starxium 20XX are electronic music heavily inspired by 80s movies and video games. The genre is called synthwave (also retrowave or outrun). These tracks are especially composed for the game, and there should be at least 12 of them in the final game.

Starxium 20XX is planned to be exclusively on Steam. The beta will be released only on PC, but the final game may be available on MacOS and Linux if there’s enough funding. The game won’t be ported to consoles like Playstation, Xbox or Switch. (Well, it’s not a definitive "no". Why not if the campaign is exceptionally successful, but let’s stay realistic for now)

Even if there’s a solo mod, Starxium 20XX is mainly a multiplayer experience. The game servers will be hosted by the players: either directly in the game, or on a dedicated server. But you will still have a game rank based on your skills and your friendship (as well as a trust factor) for matchmaking.

Here are the main rewards you can get! Yes, there’s not all of them, but you get the idea. Keep in mind that the VHS, the audio tape, and the skin booster are just for design purposes. The soundtracks, the game and the skin are digital content. (But you already know that VHS are for videos and not games, don’t you?)

For pledges of 64€ and above, you'll get an awesome Starxium 20XX t-shirt! 4 colors are available: orange on blue, orange on grey, blue on white and blue on blue. The t-shirts are made of tri-blend: it’s a very soft texture with a “dappled” look, which makes it a super cool everyday t-shirt. It’s completely different than cheap basic cotton tee.

You’ll get to choose the size and color later
You’ll get to choose the size and color later

For pledges of 128€ and above, you’ll get an awesome 61 cm x 91.5 cm (24" x 36") poster (in addition to private beta access). And for pledges of 256€ and above, you’ll get a displate: it’s a metal print of 45 cm x 32 cm (17.7" x 12.6"). The designs for both are not done yet as I want to hear your suggestions on what it should be (there may be different designs). I’ll do my best to provide the posters and prints you’re dreaming of!

No speed limit

Oh, and the shipping is free internationally! You don’t have to add anything else, whatever the country you’re living in.

Getting the minimum funding allows me to continue the game until I can put it as a beta on Steam. My plan is to get money from Steam to continue the development and make Starxium a “Game as a Service” (let’s say “a regularly updated game”).

But if the funding goes beyond that point, I can securely add functionalities to the game and make Starxium an even better experience!

Be aware that I won’t receive 100% of your pledge for the game. Some will go to Kickstarter/Payment system/Taxes. Some will go to the rewards (depending on the rewards of course). And the rest to the development of the game.

The Midnight Team is a young game studio composed by… only one person! I do everything myself, from algorithmic to 3d modeling, from music composition to webdesign, from 2d graphics to marketing. I love to be able to do so many different things in so many different fields! I never get bored!

So, my name is Hugo Attal, and I’m a freshly graduated software and network engineer.

I started creating digital contents when I was 10. I used photofiltre and created some basic static website using netlor studio (a free software). Let’s face it: it was crap (like, really), but I was into it. I switched softwares, I learnt how to code, and before 18 I already had tons of digital projects, I made websites, graphic arts, communities, artificial intelligence, etc…

Long story short, I always wanted to create video games, not because I love video games (everybody does), but because it’s the most challenging thing to create, it combines huge freedom of creation, fascinating code optimization, the opportunity to build a whole universe, and everyone can try it!

And now is my chance, I got the skills, I got the time, and I don’t have bills to pay (yet). So, during one year, I created the basic shape of the game to show you guys and know if you like it. I’m at the point where I need to know if this could be my professional project or just a simple side project.

The website, where you can get some screens, some info on the game, and register to the newsletter!

I use it as a "devblog". I try to explain how I develop the features of the game for everyone to understand. You should check out older post, you might find some things very interesting!

The close community, where you can chat and ask anything on the game. You can also get early info on the game.

I know not everyone is on Facebook, so I try to keep twitter users informed. I'm not that active on Twitter, but I'll do my best.

If you want to be the first to know when a new video or trailer is out. Or even music, as I post music videos.

When I have some cool screens to show you! There will be a bunch of them as soon as I finished the multiplayer.

If you're into synthwave, this is the place where you can listen to all the music I compose for Starxium 20XX.

Risks and challenges

You probably have heard this before, but game development, just like any other type of projects, always carry certain risks. Some features that you planned at the beginning can happen to be impossible or much more difficult that you expected. You can run out of time or money because you badly calibrated what you needed. And most of all, the final result may simply not be as good as expected.

I’m well aware of all these risks and I already have a good experience in this kind of long-term projects. Almost every core and technically challenging feature are already done (custom physics, procedural generation of the roads, core gameplay, ...). The missing features of the game to be playable are network, which is known to be quite challenging (but the Unreal Engine should make it kind of simple) and polish (menu, sounds, feedbacks, steam integration), which is just time consuming. The rest is a bonus for the game and not so difficult (map editor, car stats, mod creation).

About the final result, keep in mind that what you see on the screenshots and on the trailer is just a small part of what the game will look like. I planned to add much more details to the world. But the current images should let you get the feeling of the game. The gameplay GIFs can give you an idea on how the car physic responds to inputs.

For the physical rewards, I already ordered some to ensure the logistic works and the quality is great. I use a service that prints and sends everything internationally for me, so I don’t have to manage large stock. I guess there’s absolutely no risk here. You’ll receive everything physical about 1 or 2 months after the end of the campaign.

I’ve lowered the risks as much as I could. Now, if you like the universe, the retro feeling, the gameplay, let’s take some risk together and see where it leads! Probably between dreams of the 80s and a virtual world...
