This is a book about how to make friends with your brain again. This book is essentially all about trauma. And our traumatic responses, life bullshit, and other-people dickitude that gets in the way of us kicking ass at life. It’s also about how we create coping strategies that deal with this bullshit that fancy doctor people like to label with words like anxiety, depression, addiction, anger, etc.
These strategies are part the whole complicated process of your brain responding after shit goes down in your life. The brain is really just trying to do its job by protecting you the best way it knows how. But the brain often ends up being a not-particularly-helpful asshole instead. It’s like your friend that offers to beat the shit out of anyone who upsets you. Gratifying, but not helpful in the long run.
This book is also about general life bullshittery and other-people’s dickitude. The shit that might not be traumatic but gets in the way of us kicking ass at life. The ways we manage stuff that isn’t full blown trauma…but sure as fuck isn’t kittens, rainbows, and teddy bears. Like with trauma, the coping skills we create for THESE situations tend to be less and less useful over time and downright exhausting.
The good news is, no matter how long you’ve been stuck in this quicksand you CAN rewire your response and unfuck your brain.

About the Author
Dr. Faith G. Harper, PhD, LPC-S, ACS, ACN is a bad-ass, funny lady with a PhD. She’s a licensed professional counselor, board supervisor (that means she teaches therapists to be therapists), certified sexologist, and applied clinical nutritionist with a private practice and consulting/training business in San Antonio, TX. She has been an adjunct professor and a TEDx presenter and proudly identifies as a woman of color and uppity intersectional feminist.

Risks and challenges
We've been publishing books for more than two decades, and we're pretty good at it by this point, if we do say so ourselves. There are always some unavoidable risks in the process—books can be late from the printer (or printed upside-down!), errors can be made in data entry and shipping, pallets can be spectacularly dropped in the parking lot—but we have enough practice handling those kinds of challenges that communicating and making them right with you comes easily. And learning not to beat ourselves up over normal stuff like this is a key factor in unfucking our own brains.
