Rollecate: a fast track-laying game

€5,696

202

Kees Neve is a famous Dutch engineer. In 1967 he built his third and largest steam locomotive. He called it Rollecate. It’s been in use ever since. That is, until a few years ago. Right now it’s sitting in an old barn, waiting.

But not for much longer. You’ll get it moving again!

In this clever, quick to play game, you’ll be laying new tracks for Rollecate. But this steam locomotive has a mind of its own. It won’t wait for the tracks to be finished. So you’ll have to work fast.

The game starts with a short bit of track and Rollecate eagerly waiting to get moving. Every turn, you’ll get a chance to extend the tracks. You’ll draw a card and choose what track you want to add from your hand.

The rules are simple:

  • The track will have to fit;
  • You are not allowed to directly block the next player;
  • And the number of the card should match that of the last card, or be one higher or lower.

Once you’ve laid the track, the train will move. The points on the card indicate how fast. Three, for instance, means rolling three dice. Rollecate will move one track forward for every wheel you roll.

But be careful not to let it derail. That will cost you points! Every step Rollecate would have to ride past the end of the track, you will have to take one card from the start of the track and put it on your discard pile.

The game ends when the draw pile is depleted. You’ll count the points on your discard pile and in your hand. The player with the least points wins.

You are allowed to lay multiple tracks with the same number at once. And when putting cards on your discard pile, creating pairs with the same number allows you to elimate them. And there are ‘Rubble’ cards: they won’t allow you to extend the track, but when used the right way can help you to get rid of penalty points.

Rollecate is a fast game. It will typically only take 15 minutes. The game is different every time. And thanks to the included white metal train miniature, you’ll really feel the pressure. Enjoy!

Rollecate will come in a small but pretty box that measures approximately 11.6 x 8.4 x 3.5 cm (ca. 4.6 x 3.3 x 1.4 inch). Inside this nice little box, you'll find 55 top quality playing cards (in the standard bridge format, 56x87 mm / 2.2x3.4 inch) and four dice. The game itself is fully language independent. The box contains text in Dutch and English. Rules are included in Dutch, English and German. Great opportunity to learn a new language.

And of course, the crown jewel of this game will be the included...

The Rollecate is an actual steam locomotive. So we wanted to give this game something extra, something that would make it feel more real. That's why we decided not to use a wooden game piece, but rather an actual scale 1:87 miniature of the historical Rollecate locomotive!

This miniature will be expertly made by hand by the renowned Dutch white metal caster Ramon Jahn, founder of DTR spincasting. His shop has created hundreds of thousands of high quality miniatures for various games in the past. So we are honoured his shop is willing to hand craft this beautiful little miniature for us.

We used the popular 1:87 scale for this miniature, which happens to be an ideal size for this game! It is 55 milimeters long (about 2.2 inches) and weight approximately 50 grams (ca. 1.8oz). The tin used for the miniature is lead free and is enriched with copper and antimony. For those that like to paint their miniatures: that will be entirely possible!

The original goal of 2,500 euro was met within only 3 days. Honestly, we were a little surprised, so it took us a while to come up with some nice new stretch goals!

As the Rollecate is an all Dutch locomotive, we felt the game would have to be all Dutch as well. That's why it will be produced and assembled in The Netherlands. That is, the printing, the box making and the metal casting.

The game box, for instance, will be made by the famous Dutch Kilsdonk company. This company exists for over 100 years and still uses some very impressive, historical machines to hand craft the boxes. From what we've seen, the quality will be excellent!

The Rollecate is an actual locomotive. It is not just made up for this game. There is a foundation that is currently working hard to get Rollecate back in driving condition and restore its original rails.

So, the theme of the game is not just a theme, it is what is actually going on with the train, right now! Currently, on some yard in Nijmegen, there is a big heap of rails, waiting to be used again. Just try and envision that when you play this game. It will add a lot of fun.

A game is never a one-man-enterprise. A lot of people are involved in the process of creating a game. For Rollecate, that is no different. Author and designer of the game is Michiel de Wit. He has been 'inventing' games for as long as he could hold a pencil. Rollecate is not his first game, although it is the first to hit Kickstarter. Michiel knows his way around when it comes to producing games. He has a keen eye for quality and knows how to keep expenses low.

Associated artist for Rollecate is Miša Jovanović. He is an illustrator from Serbia. He graduated Belgrade’s Academy of Applied Arts and since then collaborated with multiple authors from across the world. While he’s mostly known for his work on children books, his illustrations are often featured in magazines, comic books, music album covers and computer and board games.

The people from DTR and Kilsdonk have been major contributors as well. They certainly went the extra mile to support Rollecate. And of course, there have been many play testers. They had a significant impact on this game. Through them, this game turned into an exciting filler that appeals to both starting and seasoned gamers alike.

All artwork and designs for the game are ready. At the moment of writing, the moulds for the white metal miniature are being made and the cutting dies for the box are being prepared. All that's needed right now is the green light to get this project going.

As everything is produced and assembled in The Netherlands, production is going to be fast and uncomplicated. There are no hard to manage external dependencies. We currently have no advanced shipping options, meaning that shipping to the US will be expensive. Shipping out several copies (through the Group pledge) should help.

There are a whole lot of different reward levels. In part, that is because we currently don't want to invest in a pledge manager. Perhaps we are being cheap, but hey, we're Dutch. The two main flavours of pledges are:

  •  The actual game

Well, this one makes most sense. Of course you'll want the game. We offer some different pledges here, mainly to do with shipping. If you're in The Netherlands or Germany, shipping will be much cheaper. You might even want to come and collect the game. Otherwise, we offer options to send 6 copies at once to reduce shipping overhead. For Dutch retailers, we offer a retail package. This includes 6 copies of the game and shipping costs.

  •  Print-and-play copy

For those that want to try the game, but find the high shipping fees prohibitive, we will provide a P&P-copy of the game. It consists of PDFs for 55 cards, the rules in Dutch and English and instructions on how to play with regular dice.

Since the game is entirely produced in The Netherlands, it will be shipped from The Netherlands (and thus the EU). That means shipping is going to be really inexpensive for backers from Holland. But for other backers, for instance from the US, shipping is going to be more... challenging.

We chose not to subsidize shipping, but rather be honest about the actual costs. So unless a reward specifies 'Free shipping', we will apply the following shipping rates:

  •  The Netherlands: 5 euro (and when you live close to Nijmegen, you could even choose to pick the item up yourself)
  •  Germany: 6 euro (Nijmegen is really close to Germany, so we can ship to Germany domestically as well)
  •  The rest of the EU: 12 euro
  •  USA: 20 euro (but we are currently looking into some way to reduce cost by bundling)
  •  The rest of the World: 20 euro (sorry about that)

Risks and challenges

We have made games before in the past. The fact that all designs are ready, contracts with producers have been signed and we are sourcing everything locally, means risk is really low. Shipping overseas will be fairly expensive, but Dutch parcel services are very reliable. Production and shipping should be done by the end of July.
