About this project
The Banner Bag Project - Why?
Gyda and I have been living in China for almost a year now. China is a fast-paced, constantly growing and changing country. Because of this, many things are coming and going, businesses are born and disappear shortly after all the time. Many of these businesses use large vinyl or woven polypropylene banners for their advertisement, which are discarded after the campaign. All those materials are often re-used for various purposes (storage facilities, "home made" barracks or stripping of the vinyl or polypropylene from its woven threads) although loads of this material once a campaign is over is disposed of or recycled using methods that pollute. More often than not these materials will be around after the businesses they were advertising are long gone!
We want to take a small step towards a cleaner tomorrow by making something useful out of these materials. Disposable plastic bags (especially for grocery shopping) are slowly being rendered illegal in many countries (the entire state of Hawaii just banned them), and new re-usable bags are more and more popular to substitute our old horribly polluting methods.
The Banner Bag wishes to provide unique, attractive and trendy tote bags that also give a helping hand to cleaning up our precious planet.
We are living in Ningbo, China. Here we follow up a printing business in charge of putting up the new banners around town and taking down the old ones. There are many kinds of advertising on these banners, which allows our bags to have a large spectrum of colors, patterns and Chinese characters.
We started sowing the first Banner Bags ourselves. We have consulted with manufacturers who could help us make The Banner Bag on a larger scale at a GREAT price, but we need a minimum order for it to be worth it. Following our instructions they have already made some samples for us, and passed our strict quality standards.
The Banner Bag's reclaimed material is very resilient, and our simple design has sown it in to a very sturdy, strong and cool tote bag. Specifications on size and weight limit for the small and large version of the bags can be found below.
With your help of course! We need to spread the word, we're certain there are people out there interested in our cause and our idea. All we need is to reach a minimum number of bags to be produced and we are set to get them to you as soon as possible!
Here you can see one of the first banners we cut up and the very first basic bags we made. Essentially this is how it's done.
An Overview of the newer Banner Bags
Here you can see what the bags will look like. Once we get funded and can get our hands on more different banners, the colors will be in a rainbow of greens, blues, yellows, reds, oranges... you name it.
Go grocery shopping with them, go have a picnic with them, use them as book bags on your way to class, or if you want to be SUPER-environmentally friendly you could even carry plastic bottles and cans to the recycling bin with The Banner Bag!
The Large Banner Bag
Our larger bag is 40 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm (height, width, and depth) and can carry up to 10-12 kg (22-26 lb.)! Our tests bringing the bag to its limits held 30 kg (66 lb.) before it busted!
The Small Banner Bag
Our smaller bag is 32 cm x 35 cm x 12 cm (height, width and depth) and can carry up to 10-12 kg (22-26 lb.)! Our tests bringing the bag to its limits held 30 kg (66 lb.) before it busted!
Fold and store easily
Our bags can be folded and secured with a small velcro strap, so you can store them easily. Here is how they look:
Testing the bags
We've tested out our bags for weight limitations, durability and to see how cool we looked carrying them around. All greatly successful tests of course :)
The bags are made of materials that can easily be washed or simply wiped clean for a wide variety of uses. We filled the bags with glass beads to test its limits,
Where the funds go
Your help pre-buying the Banner Bags will go towards acquiring the banners, setting up production and quality control, and reaching the minimum order requirements to make this project a reality. We are so thankful for all of you out there supporting this cause and to reach our project goal!
Environmentally Friendly Transport
A friend of ours is having clothing recycling bins manufactured here in Ningbo, and because they are shipped to California as is, inside them there is plenty of space to ship our Banner Bags as well. This way we will not be generating extra pollution for the shipping, and will have our bags traveling with a product that is made for the same cause! Here is a picture of one of the bins and a link to their website. http://7grecycling.com
- Can I pick and choose the bags I will be getting?
Not really, we make sure each package includes a diverse range of colors and patterns, but each bag is unique and there will be many, so that'll be a bit of a surprise as to which bags come in your package.
- Are the materials in any way toxic?
Certainly NOT. The banners are thoroughly cleaned, and the materials are perfect to carry anything including food just like the old plastic bags you got at the supermarket, only ours won't end up choking a poor seagull somewhere in the future.
- How strong are the bags?
We pushed these bags to their absolute limit, until they busted open. Unless you are carrying a bag full of gold bars (good for you if you have them to carry!) any amount of groceries, books, bottles or whatever you like to carry can fill up the bag and won't bust it. They can carry 10-12 kg (22-26 lb.)! Our tests bringing the bag to its limits held 30 kg (66 lb.) before it busted!
- Can I get a larger order of the Banner Bags than the ones listed in the pledges for a better price?
We will be monitoring our project constantly and making sure all your needs are met. We may add pledges for larger quantities if need be, or we can work something out - so YES.
- When will I receive my Banner Bags?
We calculate that upon successful funding we can produce the bags and get them out to you around July.
- What are the shipping rates?
USA domestic shipping is included! International shipping is not logical for small orders as it will cost at least 50% of your purchase price. If your not worried about the cost, then we can do it for you at the cost it is. For most European locations, you will pay about $26.00 extra for shipping on the $50 - $60 pledge size. If ordering at least $3,000 worth of bags, please contact us directly for details about exact costs and logistics information to ship ocean freight direct from China. Shipping this way will be significantly lower.
- The reward for $35 says 4 banner bags, 4 small and 4 large. So how many bags is it exactly?
We're very sorry for the mistake there, you will get 8 bags, 4 small and 4 large.
Special thanks to Matt Galat for his great photography, Sarra Smith for modeling, and the city of Ningbo for our walkabout!
