Hello friends and fans! Let me tell you what in the world I'm asking for and why I'm asking for your support. This will be my second album, but it feels like my first in so many ways to me. My first album, Portland Rain, was recorded and released in 2008, and so much has changed in the past 10 years. I have changed immensely.
CAN I BE VULNERABLE FOR A MINUTE?
In an effort to keep it real, I want to tell you the story behind why it's taken me so long. I have been an active performer in the Portland area since 2007 in Jazz/Neo-Soul/Funk etc, but I truly struggled with a lot of internal self-doubt. I didn't write music or when I tried, I threw it out, or couldn't find anything about it that I liked. It didn't matter how much encouragement I had, I still didn't believe I was capable to write. I also had this view that legitimate artists wrote 100% of the songs they perform FULLY, with no help from other people. If you got help, it meant that you were a poser or something.
It all began to change for me when I got the nerve to quit my day job in 2012 to pursue music full time. That was when I began to change my foolish mind, and said to myself, "Self, you haven't written anything on your own, so there's no harm in doing this with your awesome buddies that are awesome at music." So I decided I wanted to begin co-writing, and the first person that I did that with was my good friend, Swatkins. One of the songs that will be on my album is the first song he and I co-wrote together, and it's GOOD.
I still hesitated for some years about what to do and still battled a lot of the same doubts. Then in 2015, I saw my friend Alex Milsted out at a show, and he approached me about wanting to write with me. I think I asked him a few times to repeat himself to make sure he was serious. So we started writing, and a lot of music came from these sessions. I still doubted, but I began to enjoy the process. I began really liking my own music. Then we finally had enough for a solid set by the spring of 2017, and I decided it was time to play these songs at a show. I wanted a no pressure kind of gig, so I picked to debut these at a very friendly dive bar, "The Starday Tavern" to do this. I have played so many larger venues, and have had not the slightest anxiety at those, but THAT NIGHT??? I was more nervous than I'd ever been.
Fast forward... in the past year and a half, I have had multiple shows featuring my original music at some great local venues, the 1905, Solae's, the Mission Theater, Jack London Revue, and what do I say about it all?? There is more joy and fulfillment in this than I've EVER had on stage. The doubts are gone, the nerves are gone, and my friends and fans are digging it. I am so thankful for the amount of true healing that has happened through this process! Also, I'm using a harmonizer at my shows, and I'm nerding out a bit on that (see videos of nerdiness below).
WHAT AM I MAKING?
I am making a full length album with only original music that I have written or co-written. It'll be soulful, funky, deep, joyful, fun, and probably some other things too. I am truly PROUD of all the music and I am hopeful to be able to share that to a wider audience through this process.
WHAT IS THE MONEY FOR?
So here we are, we have the music, we have made demos of all the tracks and are ready to take them to the studio! As you probably know, making an album is expensive!! Here's where the money will be going:
- Studio Time
- CD Duplication
- Album Art
- Kickstarter Fees
WHO'S ON MY TEAM?
Alex Milsted - Keys/Producer
Trent Baarspul - Guitar
JP Downer - Bass
Tyrone Hendrix - Drums
Plus I'll have more musicians than this on the record (BFox I'm looking at you!)
WHAT'S THE TIMELINE?
As soon as this campaign funds, we would begin scheduling our time slots in the studio. I am hopeful that we can fully track the album in October & November. Then comes the other stuff, mixing, mastering, duplication, and getting all the info to all the places it needs to go (CDBaby, iTunes, etc). I am planning to have this finished no later than February of next year.
WHY DO I CARE?
I care so much about this album because it has been truly a labor of love, trust, and emotional energy to get this thing finalized. I also am really looking forward to having an album released that I feel truly represents who I am as an artist currently. Lastly, one of the most fulfilling things to me as an artist and performer, is having that moment of connection with the audience. When the stories in the songs become a point of familiarity and understanding with whomever I cross paths with, I couldn't ask for a better reward. Connection to each other is important, and it is a privilege I get to do that with my listeners. This is also a great thing for my career, as you can probably imagine. Having a current product that represents me and my music well will give me the ability to go further than I ever have before, and I know that it will open many doors for me.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for checking out this project and supporting me!
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenge we are taking on with this is to fully track everything in the studio within the budget. We estimated conservatively the studio time that we will need, but you never know if things end up taking longer. What we are doing to reduce this risk is to get our demos as close to the final sound as possible to greatly reduce the number of decisions that we make while clocking in studio time. We have a clear focus and direction that will drive our studio time to make it a streamlined process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
