The goal is to fund the publishing of two large-scale, hardcover, coffee table books. This is my third Kickstarter campaign, and like last year I will produce a book featuring wounded veterans of the Gulf Wars, Invictus and a second book featuring male figure studies using fitness models from around the world, Adonis Blue.
Over the past year I have photographed fifteen severely wounded veterans from the Gulf Wars, all of them amputees who lost a limb or multiple limbs from IED attacks while deployed. Of these fifteen veterans, ten served in either the United States Army or Marines. Five served in either the British Army or The Royal Marines. The format and size of Invictus will be the same as last year's Always Loyal: hardcover photo book with dust jacket, 96 pages or more and measures 13.5 X 10.4 inches. Like last year I will include individual bios for each veteran. All the images are already photographed and only need to be organized and published. When the book releases, I anticipate a full retail price of $79.
For this project I have photographed over twenty male fitness models, non-amputee veterans, and a couple amputee veterans - who will appear in this book as well as Invictus. Adonis Blue is in the tradition of my previous male, figure study books, and it will be the same size as last year's book, Exhibition: hardcover photo book with dust jacket, 128 pages and measures 13.5 X 10.4 inches. All the images are already photographed and only need to be organized and published. When the book releases, I anticipate a full retail price of $89-$99.
Like last year, I will offer a collector's edition consisting of both Invictus and Adonis Blue; both will be clothbound with foil stamped lettering, in a special clothbound slip case also with foil lettering. Each book will have individual slip covers, and both books will fit into the one slip case. Only 200 will be printed. They will be hand stamped, hand numbered and hand signed by Michael Stokes. At your election, your name will be printed in a special acknowledgements section of the book, separate from the regular Kickstarter acknowledgement section. Below is a sample of last year's collector's edition.
In the past two years, from my personal funds I have donated over $32,500 to veteran's charities. Kickstarter does not allow funds to go to charities, but I plan on continuing my donations in some sort of proportion to the success of each campaign.
One last thing...
The photos in the Kickstarter video are just a sample of what will be in the books. Many unpublished images will appear in both books. These photos are specifically designated for the books, especially Adonis Blue. While working with many elite models in the fitness and body building world, I have selected images that have never before been viewed on the internet or social media. These intimate and exclusive photos are reserved for projects like this, in order to provide a truly special experience for those who support the books.
Please continue to support the work by pledging. The Kickstarter time line is only 21 days. I estimate that the book will be printed and ready to distribute early November to Kickstarter participants. In mid or late November I anticipate the book will be available on my website and Amazon US. At this time I am not sure if the books will be available through outlets like Amazon UK or Book Depository. I am currently working on methods to make this happen. International shipping is available on this Kickstarter, and because it is so expensive, I am only going to charge about 40% of my actual International postage expense. Thank you!
Risks and challenges
The risk is relatively low. If I don't reach the funding goal, then your credit card is not charged. If I reach the funding goal, then it is just a matter of printing the books and distributing them. I have more than one bid for the cost of publication, and the funding goal will meet or exceed more than one of the printing and distribution quotes.
Last year I did a Kickstarter for my books, Always Loyal and Exhibition. Everything went as planned and on schedule. I believe this year things will go just as smoothly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
