UPDATE: AUGUST 29, 2014 - We Sold out the Special Edition, so that means $10,000 for the Semper Fi Fund. Thanks!
UPDATE: AUGUST 25, 2014 - If we pre-sell all 75 collector's edition books, that will total $7,500 to Semper Fi Fund. If we make this goal, I will add an additional $2,500 to the donation to make it a total of $10,000 to the charity. The Kickstarter is going well. I added a new tier, a collector's edition of Bare Strength that will benefit this charity that supports wounded warriors. So far we've raised $5,600 and our goal is $7,500. With each pre-sale of this $295 tier, $100 goes to this worthy charity, and if we pre-sell all of them, I add $2,500 to total $10,000.
UPDATE: AUGUST 18, 2014 - Kickstarter Update: I have added a new pledge level that will benefit The Semper Fi Fund, a charity organization for injured US veterans of war. This will be the only addition to the project. Remember you can always move your pledges around, upgrade or downgrade anytime before the Kickstarter closes. 1) A collector's edition of Bare Strength in a special cover, clothbound with foil stamped lettering in a slip case also clothbound with foil lettering. Only 100 will be printed. 2) Hand stamped, hand numbered, hand signed by Michael Stokes. 3) Hand signed by Alex Minsky, Chris Van Etten and Brad Ivanchan, all USMC amputee veterans. 4) Your name printed in the acknowledgements section of the book. 5) $100 from each pledge will go to Semper Fi Fund, a charity for US injured vets. Sorry, but we cannot make this tax deductible. Limited to 75 backers. Only available within the US.
UPDATE: AUGUST 8, 2014 - In less than 48 hours we reached our goal, so any additional funding at this point, will go towards the printing of more books. The initial Kickstarter launch-goal finances 1,100 books. I would like to see a print run of about 2,100 books, similar to the print run of my first book, Masculinity which is now completely sold out. Thanks!
AUGUST 4, 2014 - The goal is to fund the publishing of a large scale, hardcover, coffee table book titled, Bare Strength consisting of male, erotic images and figure studies. The images are already photographed, edited and only need to be organized and published. This hardcover photo book with dust jacket will be approximately 128 pages and will measure 13.5 X 10.4 inches, consisting of both color and black and white images. The full retail price will be $99.99, printed on heavy stock, high quality, photo paper. I have already made contact with experts in design and have quotes from a reputable printer and a distributor. I have spent many hours with each hashing out every cost, every detail, and we are now ready to commence with this project. Please know that if a project does not meet its goal, no one's credit card is charged. The cards are only charged when the project meets its goal and the pledging period ends.
For those of you who purchased my first book, Masculinity or follow my work will already have an idea of what the second book will consist of. In Bare Strength there will be a chapter of my amputee marines, but most of the book will be images of fitness competitors, personal trainers and body builders from around the world. I want to thank all the people who have supported my work and encouraged me to follow my vision. I simply want to continue to explore raw, male sexuality through images that are either unique or a homage to a masterpiece but always outstanding and fresh.
The photos in the Kickstarter video are just a sampling of what will be in the book. Many unpublished images will appear in Bare Strength, and I have been saving, not sharing on social media photos specifically designated for this book. I work with some of the most exclusive models in the fitness and body-building world, and some of the images I take of them we never release to the internet or social media. These are the most intimate images and these are reserved for projects like this, which keeps them exclusive and special.
Please continue to support the work by pledging. The Kickstarter time line is only 30 days. We estimate that the book will be printed and ready to distribute mid November to Kickstarter participants. In mid December we anticipate the book will be available on Amazon and through other distribution avenues.
Risks and challenges
The risk is relatively low. If we don't reach the funding goal, then your credit card is not charged. If we reach the funding goal, then it is just a matter of printing the book and distributing it. I have more than one bid for the cost of publication, and the funding goal will meet or exceed more than one of the printing and distribution quotes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
It will be the cover photo of the book, which has been narrowed down but not yet decided. The size will be 8.5" X 11", printed on archival paper using archival inks, museum quality, limited edition of 100, hand stamped, hand signed. I sell these images on my website for $100 each.
When you make your pledge, Kickstarter gathers the address that is connected to your credit card. They do not ask for a delivery address. When the Kickstarter closes, I will send out what they call a "survey" and this is where you will indicate the address you want your book sent to.
It's my understanding that the charges go through either the day the Kickstarter closes or the day after.
Yes, when the Kickstarter closes, I will send out what Kickstarter calls a survey. This is where you would indicate such a change, also you will enter your shipping address at that time.
