Portrait artist seeks funds to kickstart an exciting year long project involving YOU and film/produce fun educational drawing & painting tutorial video.
My name is Michael Shapcott and I am a full-time artist based in central Connecticut. Art, specifically portraits, are my life. I think more than anything else in the world, the human face expresses the most emotion, complexity, mystery, and connection to us as human beings.
Everyone is a unique version of the human spirit. By studying and learning about others, I found I was really learning about parts of myself. There’s something so intimate about sitting down and creating a personality, a moment, and most importantly an emotion.
It’s so fascinating to me that I can slightly alter the angle of an eye or the color of a cheek and the entire expression of the figure changes, changing the entire feel of the piece. The art of bringing emotion to a flat surface will always be a lifelong experience and learning process for me.
DRAWING A DRAWING 365
Drawing a Drawing 365 is a project where I create a daily graphite portrait for 365 days. I plan to start the project on June 6, 2012… my 30th birthday!
I'd like to bring Drawing a Drawing 365 to life in a huge series of portrait drawings that push my limits as an artist, allow me to develop my talent in a fun new way, and directly involve the people who inspire me most – you!**

Not only will this project be a way for me to improve my technique/productivity, but my hope is that it will provide me with the funds needed to create a series of Drawing a Drawing videos as well as better Painting a Painting videos and (perhaps most exciting) a TUTORIAL video for those interested in my process.
^ One of my Painting a Painting videos entitled Kierra ^
I want this tutorial to be like nothing the world has ever seen.
This isn't going to be an outdated boring instructional video by any means! I will go through my entire process from preparing the canvas to the graphite underdrawing, the acrylic stage, the oil glazing, and the finishing touches. Secrets will be revealed, tips and tricks will be highlighted, and there will be an explosion of music, color, and fun. I want viewers to not only explore a new way of creating portraits but also be inspired to enjoy and find meaning in the process.
REWARDS FROM ME TO YOU
In return for your pledge, you will receive rewards based on your contribution amount. These include:
+ A mailed postcard print of one of my paintings with a personal message handwritten on the back from me to you
+ FREE exclusive online access / signed DVD copy of the 1st full-length painting tutorial I create
+ A Limited Edition signed-by-the-artist Giclee print (my first LE print!) released to KickStarter supporters ONLY
+ And drum roll please… a personal portrait sketch, drawing, or painting of YOU!
For those who pledge to be one of the “days” in the 365 days, you will be assigned a specific day where I will create an original graphite portrait sketch of you (or the person of your choice) and feature your portrait on my Drawing a Drawing 365 tumblr blog specifically created for this project (http://drawingadrawing.tumblr.com/). Then I mail it out to you to enjoy forever!**
**PLEASE SCROLL DOWN TO THE FAQ TO FIND OUT EXACTLY HOW THE PORTRAIT PLEDGE WORKS! THANK YOU.
For those who want even MORE, I’m also offering two TOP-LEVEL REWARDS for a fraction of my original commission price: The first option is a highly-detailed 11 x 14 graphite drawing of you (or the person of your choice). This drawing will be different from the 365-day sketch as it will be larger, additional time will be spent on it, and it will be a more meticulous piece. And finally, for the top-level reward, I will create a 16 x 20 personal commission painting of you (or the person of your choice) exploding in full color.
The prices of my original paintings and drawings are out of reach for many of my fans so this is a great opportunity not only for them to own one of my pieces but to have a personal portrait to treasure forever.
If you're amped about this project, please help spread the word by sharing this page with others! Use the URL www.DrawingADrawing.com and it will redirect back to this page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
If you check out my artwork, you will see that I definitely don't discriminate against non-human species. Actually, I'm very fond of animals and would be happy to substitute a person for an animal or pet if that is your desire. :)
If you're not familiar with how Kickstarter works, here's a brief overview... Kickstarter is an exciting place where creators (like me) can post a project and get pledges from people who are interested in their ideas and want to help their project move forward. This gives fans (like you) the power to bring the projects they choose to life. Kickstarter is powered by a unique all-or-nothing funding method where a project must be fully-funded or no money changes hands. To make a pledge, supporters choose one of the reward packages (listed to the right). Their credit card or other account will not be charged unless the goal is met. If the goal falls short, no one gets charged and no fees are applied so there's no risk of putting up money for a project that never gets off the ground. (So I hope you are as excited as I am about this project because I can’t do it without your help!!) **For more details/peculiars on backing, please visit http://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/backing%20a%20project
Funding will be used for material and shipping costs for the drawings; print and shipping costs for the postcards and the Limited Edition release; a new video camera and computer so that I can produce and edit high-quality drawing/painting and tutorial videos; website work to offer my tutorial online; material costs for DVD production; and the time to do it all!
That would be incredible! More funds = more resources and that means better portraits and an even better tutorial for you!! If we go over the goal, I will be able to buy the absolute BEST materials for the portraits, get additional equipment for the tutorial like lighting and better sound equipment, buy props for fun and helpful skits throughout the film, and offer bonus rewards to supporters!
There has been a little confusion so just to be clear… I will not be drawing your portrait in person. Due to the high volume of portraits and the fact that participants are from all over the world, it's not possible for me to draw from life. And I actually prefer to work from reference photos. Let me explain how the portrait pledge works in a little more detail...
When you pledge, I will ask you to reserve your day. That’s all I need from you until the project pledge time is over (April 28, 2012 at 11:59PM). At that point, I will begin messaging everyone asking for reference photos. That's when you email me a photo or picture of yourself or whoever you'd like to have drawn. Then you wait until your day. So if your day is March 21st, I will draw your portrait on that day and post it on my blog. After I post, I will email you with a link to your portrait and then mail out the original to you (which you can expect to receive within 1 to 2 weeks from your day).
Hope that makes sense. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions :)
Yes, if you would like to reserve a specific day (like a birthday for example) I'd be happy to oblige. Please keep in mind though that reservations will be on a first-come first-served basis (those who pledge first pick their day first) so it might be a good idea to pledge sooner rather than later. If you don't request a specific day, I will automatically put you in for the earliest available calendar day.
Since there are so many portraits, I might want to shake things up a bit! Splashes and drips of color are certainly a possibility but there’s no guarantee. The answer to this question is possibly, it depends on the piece. Every portrait is unique to the person being drawn and so I will do what feels best for each one. :)
Great! Thank you! Select the $250+ reward and pledge for the amount of days you'd like. Please refer to UPDATE No. 4 for details.
Once the project is funded, I will send the postcards and LE prints out as soon as I can print them. To err on the safe side, I'm estimating that you will receive the postcards in July and the LE prints in September (but most likely it will be sooner).
This depends on your day of the year for the 365-day sketches. So if your day is August 10th, your portrait will be featured on the blog that day and you can expect to receive the original within the next 1 to 2 weeks. For those who order a highly-detailed drawing or a full color painting, delivery will depend on a first-come first-served basis as well. If you pledge first, I will draw your portrait first. I hope to have them all completed by January.
I want to make the tutorial as amazing as it can be and do it up right so that will take some time. There is a lot that goes into a film of any kind let alone a full-length educational art film. I will need to gather equipment, flesh out my tutorial content, create/produce original music to be used in the tutorial, film/produce/edit, make it available online, and design/produce/package the DVD. My goal is for a February release with DVD shipping shortly after.
This project is open to anyone and everyone WORLDWIDE!!!
Yes, all shipping is included with your pledge. :)
