The play was inspired by the story of Gwen Araujo, who was a transgender teen killed when her gender identity was revealed to her (nominally) heterosexual lovers. It's a love letter to my mom and the queer uncle that she loved so much when she was little.
It was my thesis play for my MFA in playwriting from USC School of Theatre, it was a finalist for the 2011 Eugene O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, and it will be my first professional production in L.A.
Playwrights' Arena is giving me a wonderful opportunity, and I'm asking for your support. We have some money for venue rental and for paying the actors; we're applying for the few grants available to us; we hope ticket sales will make up the rest. I set up this Kickstarter campaign to help raise money for to pay the set, lighting, sound and costume designers, because we only have about a quarter of the money we'll need to produce this play, and I hope you'll help me make this dream a reality.

written by Michael Premsrirat
directed by Jon Lawrence Rivera
produced by Playwrights Arena and Latino Theater Company
in association with PAE Live!
April 19- May 20
Los Angeles Theatre Center - Theater 2
514 S. Spring St., Downtown Los Angeles
A Filipino-American boy wants nothing more than to be accepted for who
he is. Forget that he likes wearing girl’s clothes to school and
breaks out to do impromptu Christina Aguilera songs. That’s nothing
compared to the trouble he is headed. A funny, heart-wrenching, sweet
play about owning yourself.
