About this project
PRE-ORDERS AVAILABLE NOW AT WWW.MOHINDERS.COM!
At mohinders, we make shoes. We keep it simple and we source it right. Our minimalist design reduces the number of components in our shoes and allows them to be constructed by hand. We make purposeful sourcing choices when selecting our India-based suppliers and our high-quality materials. The fruits of our labor: the mohinders Men's and Women's City Slippers.
The mohinders Founding Adventure
Hey Kickstarter...I’m Michael, and I used to be a corporate lawyer. About a year and half into corporate law life, I started daydreaming about doing something more creative. I wasn’t sure exactly what I had in mind, but everything became clear a few months after I purchased a pair of hand-woven leather slip-ons from a street-side shop on a trip in Mumbai, India.
Once back in the Bay Area, I began wearing these shoes every day. I wore them literally everywhere - work, nice dinners, watering my loquat seedlings. I received an embarrassing number of compliments on my shoes from total strangers (which doesn’t usually happen to me). It didn’t take long to come to the realization that everyone needs a pair of these well-made, versatile shoes...now known as mohinders.
To do this, and do it well, I knew I wanted to source the shoes right. Visions of traveling to India, searching for the location where they were produced, trying to track down the craftsmen and craftswomen who specialized in making them, and meeting interesting people along the way - well, it sounded amazing! So amazing that I quit my job and immediately booked a flight to Mumbai.
You can watch our video for the whole story, but, to sum it up I went back to India and zig-zagged across the country by train, where I encountered bright-colored loincloth-clad juvenile wrestlers, was spontaneously interviewed by local press (article below appeared in several local papers), and hopped off a moving train (it wasn’t going very fast), until I discovered an amazing shoe-crafting cooperative in a village in Northwestern Karnataka. This cooperative is now mohinders’ primary supplier.
Since the initial sourcing trip, I’ve been back to India two more times to personally source additional materials and build relationships with new suppliers to complete the supply chain. On one of these trips, I crashed the International Leather Fair in Kolkata and met a World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO) certified non-profit that now puts the finishing touches on our shoes. On the same trip, I dropped in on a pioneering leather tannery on the outskirts of Kolkata, which became our heirloom-tanned leather supplier. And I stumbled upon an amazing shoe shop on the Colaba Causeway in Mumbai where I struck up a friendship with a local shop owner who’s now running our India operations.

Now, we reach the part of our journey where you come in! We’re raising funds so we can bring this good-looking, versatile leather shoe to the people.
Our goal is to raise $15,000 which will be used to:
1) Place a bulk order with our principal supplier
2) Develop the infrastructure to bring these shoes to you (product packaging, shipping, and other costs)
3) Turn a dream project into a dream full-time job!
Okay, Tell Me More About the Shoes!
Our shoes are comprised of just a few high-quality leather components:
These components are hand-woven together by highly-skilled artisans to create the City Slipper.
They're "sourced right"
We didn’t just find our suppliers and materials on a website...we’ve traveled to India three times in the last year to find the best!
We do our best to find materials that are high-quality, from India, eco-friendly and have a great story.
We purposefully source our suppliers. We look at the following criteria when selecting suppliers: India-based, have expertise and passion for their craft, pay fair wages, and take responsibility in their communities.
You can wear mohinders anytime, anywhere
You can get up in the morning, slip-on your mohinders and know that you will be dressed appropriately for anything you might get into.
Okay, I’m sold. What styles do you make?
We're offering 4 different models as rewards for your contributions. The Men's and Women's City Slippers are available for a $65 contribution. The Men's and Women's Heirloom City Slippers are available for a $95 contribution. Check 'em out...
What's up with the stripes?
That's our branding! Each pair of mohinders is hand-painted with a turquoise and red stripe (colors may vary slightly). I was trying to remember where the inspiration for these colors came from, and then came across some photos I took while in India...
Thanks for checking us out!

Risks and challenges
We have all the necessary pieces in place to make this happen and have already managed production and shipping of several hundred pairs of mohinders from India. We know our suppliers well and have visited our production sites during three different trips to India.
Still, we know that a perfect plan won’t guarantee on-time delivery. We’ve scheduled our campaign to avoid the rainy season in India but unexpected monsoons could still delay production timing. We’ve set a limit as to how many shoes we will sell according to our production capabilities to make sure we can deliver what we promise. As soon as we reach our Kickstarter goal, we will begin the first run of production.
We’ll get you your shoes...not even an Indian monsoon could stop us!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
They are...but no need to worry about that just yet. You don't have to select your size until the end of the campaign (Dec 11!). At that point, we'll send you an email with information on sizing and ask you your size and shipping address.
