It is 221 BC, and Emperor Qin has done the impossible - he has achieved a united China. While he was in power for a relatively short period of time, he managed to enact policies, reforms, and projects that remained impactful for centuries. In Hisashi Hayashi’s Emperor’s Choice, 2-5 players will seek to spread their own personal power and influence, while making sure that their status in the eyes of Qin Shi Huang does not falter in the process.
Over the course of 6 turns, players will use a unique bidding system to claim Qin Dynasty tiles that will be drawn randomly every turn. They will also recruit new followers, claim tributes and Imperial Treasures, add soldiers to their armies, and if they are lucky enough to have the favor of the Emperor, get to choose the Imperial Decree for the turn, which will be scored by every player.
Emperor’s Choice is a deep strategy game, filled with different paths to victory for the players to utilize. Strategies used in previous sessions will not necessarily be available for players in subsequent plays, keeping everyone engaged with the flow of the game, and making the game a challenge each and every time it hits the table.
You may have noticed that we do not have a Retail edition of Emperor’s Choice as a pledge option. Tasty Minstrel Games started Deluxifying their games with the release of Orleans in 2015. Since then, we have continued to give Kickstarter Backers the option to enjoy our games with upgraded components, and this has worked very well for both us and our customers.
However, we have seen the Board Game industry change from an era when satisfactory components and presentation were commonplace into a time where Deluxe games are now becoming the new “normal”. We see this and recognize it, and that is why for this release we offering only a fantastically upgraded Deluxe version of Emperor’s Choice. However, because of the higher cost of these games, we expect there to be far fewer copies than normal present in retail stores, and for any future printings to also require crowdfunding.
We have also been working hard to try and avoid unnecessary delays, including working on early sampling for some of the trickier components, like the tiles!
A game of Emperor’s Choice contains 6 rounds. Each round has 4 phases. After the completion of the final round, the player who has scored the most points will be declared the winner.
During the auction phase, each player will submit escalating bids comprised of cards and soldiers. After all players but one have passed the turn order for the round will be determined.
In turn order, each player will claim Qin Dynasty tiles from the display. These tiles will grant both immediate and long term effects.
On their turn, players will collect income and then recruit new character cards, hire more soldiers, and move up the palace board]
The player with the highest level of Emperor’s Trust will choose an Imperial Decree that will affect all players, and then flip the card.
At the end of the round, new Qin Dynasty tiles will be drawn to prepare the board for the next bidding and auction phase.
Dan King also did a Rules School video to teach you Emperor's Choice!
This is the rulebook from the original version of the game. The final one will be updated and expanded, including images of the Deluxified components, clarifications, and a 2 player variant not in the original!
Emperor's Choice Deluxified™ is expected to weigh a whopping 4.5kg. Shipping is going to be more than our previous Deluxified™ projects. Also, given the packaging of our Deluxified™ games in their individual boxes, they are shipped in singles and so there is no discount on shipping for multiple copies. These decisions were made so that we could offer the best Deluxified™ product possible and make sure that it arrives to you in the best condition possible.
We will be using CrowdOx as our pledge manager for this campaign. Once surveys have been sent, we will allow a reasonable amount of time to complete them, and reminders will be sent throughout that time.
If a Backer fails to complete the survey before fulfillment and the fulfillment center in your region does not have any more copies, you may be subject to additional shipping fees. In the extremely rare case, we may have to refund your pledge if the item is no longer available.
Friendly Local Game Stores are an invaluable part of this hobby that we love, and we appreciate everything they do to bring value to the industry. TMG recognizes that the brick & mortar store is not only a place to buy games, but a location for people to enjoy their hobby with a welcoming community.
Emperor’s Choice is an extremely expensive game to make and thus we cannot afford the risk of production without collecting all funds for anything more than 4 copies per physical store. There will be no editions from TMG which are not Deluxified™. Mr. Hayashi produced non-deluxe versions for Okazu Brand in 2017 prior to licensing all rights outside of Japan to TMG.
In an attempt to maintain the high price of $100 USD, but also to ensure that interested retailers are able to buy at a full 50% off, our Deluxified™ games do not go into standard distribution channels and TMG will not be selling for less than $100. TMG will be making only what is ordered plus a very small number of extras for replacement of damaged copies and future sales.
The individuals who own and run game stores are some of the most informed people within the industry, and the knowledge that they have shared with TMG has proven to be most insightful. We invite all Retailers to join our Facebook Retailer Group so they can be part of the conversation between publisher and retailer, get any questions they might have answered, and be involved in future projects. The group is available now, and not just for backers. You can find it here:
Please use our TMG Retailer Facebook Group for specific pledge information forEmperor's Choice. The retailer reward tier will require you to be able to provide proof of your business, and you will need to be located in the United States. It will allow you access to our pledge manager and retailer rates.
Risks and challenges
Tasty Minstrel Games (TMG) has delivered numerous games throughout the world. Some that were funded on Kickstarter and some that were not. As an established games company, the real question is making sure we manage potential sources of delay and communicating clear expectations throughout the campaign and after the funding ends.
TMG is a small team of individuals that are managing all aspects of the business which has helped to mitigate all of the various risks and challenges. After the Kickstarter funds, it's best to contact us via email at support @ playtmg .com, with any questions or concerns. The actual KS page will be monitored only periodically post funding.
One risk that is associated with shipping is that of damaged game boxes. We do have custom packaging made to minimize this issue. However, it is still a risk. We do not have replacement boxes or sleeves to replace these damages. If there is a problem with in game components these can be replaced by emailing parts @ playtmg .com.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
