True Colors offers something new and fresh to the teen drama genre, something that makes it more than just another patchwork of interconnected coming of age stories: a centralized, long-term arc. Running underneath all the smaller, personal tales of self-discovery, rebellion, disillusionment, and young love is the larger story of a suburban underground of LGBT kids and the unexpected ripple effect their actions had on the rise of queer teen culture in the 1990's.

But before all that, before they were a community, they were just a handful of lonely, isolated teenagers. They had different friends, different interests, and went to different schools. For all each of them knew, he or she was the only queer kid for miles in any direction, which is why the pilot features three separate storylines which, with the exception of one scene, do not intersect.

THE A-STORY introduces our hero and narrator, Corey, a snarky sci-fi/fantasy geek whose family is coming undone in the wake of his rebellious sister's recent (and possibly permanent) departure. As if that weren't enough to deal with, Corey's aspirations of his own Han and Leia romance are derailed when his sex drive kicks in and it turns out the only classmates he's checking out are other guys.

THE B-STORY follows Stephanie, a straight-laced Catholic schoolgirl who finds herself drawn into in unexpected flirtation with Quilla, the androgynous lead singer of an all-girl grunge band. While Stephanie swears her interest is completely innocent, Quilla knows better. So does Kacy, Quilla's girlfriend.

THE C-STORY spotlights Ian, a charming young actor attempting to nudge his new boyfriend, Vinny, toward both the closet door and his own Broadway dreams. However, Ian's got a secret that could end this idyllic college romance before it really begins: he's not in college. In fact, he's just young enough to make Vinny a felon.

MICHAEL S. MAMMANO (Writer/Director, Producer) is a freelance author for Den of Geek US, contributing episodic reviews and in-depth essays on TV and comics. An erstwhile production assistant for Space Command Studios, he has also been mentored by its co-founders, seasoned television veterans Marc and Elaine Zicree.

SCOTT BAKER (Director of Photography) has written and directed dozens of short films that have won awards and played in festivals around the world, including The Diary of Anne Frank of the Dead and Rationed. Most recently, he funded his own Sci-Fi/Horror film, 5th Passenger, right here on Kickstarter.

LAURA MULLIGAN (Editor) has nearly a decade of experience in editing for shows like NBC's Community, 30 for 30, and Outsider's Inn. Her resume also boasts an impressive record of freelance projects.

One of the first questions often raised about this project is "Why is it set in the 90's?" And it's a fair question. Given the time, effort, and money required to create a convincing period setting, why bother?

We're at a point when LGBT representation in the media is at an all-time high. Not only are LGBT characters more popular and more common than ever, they're far less likely to be a punchline or a token. They get to have fully fleshed out characters, their own storylines and relationships, and they can be of any age. Shows like Degrassi and Glee have helped teen viewers acclimate to the presence of a few queer characters amidst an otherwise straight, cisgender cast. These viewers know these characters. They root for them and want to see their stories told. And that kind of acceptance just goes to show that while there are still many battles to be won, the world has changed for better.

But what of all the stories of a less tolerant time, a time when queer youth didn't have much of a prayer of integrating into even the smallest groups of straight kids, when all they had was each other (if they could even find each other)? There was no Trevor Project, no It Gets Better, no role models in the media to look up to and emulate, no social networking... and the internet? The internet was still a mysterious new frontier where there be dragons. And that was if you even had an internet connection.

It's ironic that such an accepting social climate in which these stories can finally be told is, by its own nature, one in which they can't believably take place. LGBT kids certainly still have problems and plenty of them, but their circumstances are just different now, and a little too much would be lost in the translation. But turn back the clock a couple of decades, and suddenly those "dated" stories make perfect sense and become the greater story of how we got from there to here.

And that is why our series opens in 1993.

That and the soundtrack will freakin' RULE. Who else misses Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, and 10,000 Maniacs? I know I do.

This is a cast-heavy project featuring an ensemble of no less than eighteen speaking roles. It's also a teen show, which means renting time with two different high school campuses (we already have LA Valley College locked down for the college sequences).

Lastly, to put it bluntly, period pieces aren't cheap, and the cost of securing all the props, costumes, and music required to make it really feel like 1993 will be one of our chief expenses.

Our main goal of $50,000 would fund the A-Story featuring Corey's hormonal jumpstart and ensuing identity crisis.

Our stretch goal of $75,000 would greenlight both the B- and C-Stories, featuring Stephanie's walk on the wild side and Ian and Vinny's jailbait romance.

These goal amounts factor in all the production costs mentioned above plus the cast and crew's wages, Kickstarter's cut, taxes, and reward fulfillment for our backers. Speaking of which, check out the sidebar to the right for a list of those bad-ass rewards.

Keep in mind that you can pledge any amount of money you like. The listed dollar amounts merely denote where each reward level begins. Every little bit helps, so please donate whatever you can to not only help bring a fun and interesting series to life but to be a part of something truly unique that could have a lasting impact on people and the ever-shifting cultural landscape.

Together, we can do this. Thank you!

Risks and challenges

Every production has its share of unforeseen complications but we've gone to great lengths to identify any potential bumps in the road and adjust accordingly. So, what obstacles might we encounter during production?

TIME - In striving for realism, we cast as many of the teen roles as possible with actual teen actors. And while it really does add a degree of authenticity to the piece, the downside is that there's a limit to how many hours a day a minor can work or even just *be* on set. In addition, they're required to have a certain amount of classroom/education time.

Naturally, this affects scheduling, which scenes we can do at which time, and even how many days it will take to shoot the entire production. Fortunately, a few of our younger actors (including Luke Darga, who is stepping into the role of Corey, played by Beau Classen in the trailer) are being home schooled so that they can get their education while having the flexibility to work around a production schedule. This is especially helpful in the case of Luke, as he would have the most lines and overall screen time.

We've also arranged the shooting schedule to specifically accommodate this practical concern and to avoid anyone's clock running out in the middle of a scene.

LOCATION - Since we're going to require the use of schools for several sequences, our ability to shoot in those locations will likely be limited to nights and weekends (unless we're fortunate enough to book them during holiday breaks), but there are several schools in the LA area that are accustomed to film shoots and have a standard procedure for making themselves available. In addition, we already have access to LA Valley College, where we shot the trailer.

TRAVEL - While most of our cast and crew are local to the greater Los Angeles area, where the pilot will be shot, two of our actors would be traveling long distance, one from the east coast, another from Vancouver. However, both have already made arrangements to be present in LA to shoot as the production schedule requires.

There are other minor hiccups that may occur, but all the major issues have been addressed so that we can, for the most part, proceed unhindered to deliver the best product possible.
