Final hours for the Death of Dulgath Graphic Novel Kickstarter

Hey all, we are just a few dollars ($615 to be exact) from our $35,000 stretch goal for The Death of Dulgath Graphic Novel Kickstarter. If you like the Jester comic you recently received as part of this Kickstarter, you'll really want to get in on the graphic novel adaptation of the full novel. There will be a special limited edition cover for the Kickstarter backers that won't be available when the graphic novel goes off to the retail chain. We are fully funded so the book WILL be made, so no worries there. But if you want to get some of the bonus stuff, now's the time. Project closes at 9:00 Eastern so less than seven hours to go!

Another Kickstarter worth considering

I've backed a good number of Kickstarters over the years and one of the organizations I've bought the most from is Silence in the Library. This is a small press that has been producing high quality anthologies, graphic novels, and fiction projects through Kickstarter since June of 2013. Their projects include:

  • $21,008 - Pride and Prejudice Illustrated by Janet Lee
  •  $ 8,740 - YA Fiction from Silence in the Library
  •  $19,881 - Athena's Daughters, Volume 2
  •  $12,197 - Silence in the Library Publishing Fall 2014 Releases
  •  $16,270 - HEROES! A Diverse Superhero Anthology
  •  $ 6,087 - Elected - A dystopian novel by author Rori Shay
  •  $15,884 - Icarus: A Graphic Novel
  •  $44,350 - Athena's Daughters: Women in Science Fiction and Fantasy
  •  $ 8,191 - War of the Seasons, a fantasy trilogy by Janine K. Spendlove
  •  $ 8,349 - Children's Illustrated History of Presidential Assassination
  •  $28,431 - Time Traveled Tales: A Speculative Fiction Anthology

They just launched their latest project: MONSTERS! the anthology and I'm confident it will be as successful as their other projects. This anthology of horror short stories both traditional and unconventional are coming from a fabulous line up including: Aaron Allston, Michael A. Stackpole, Timothy Zahn, Maxwell Alexander Drake, Addie J. King, Aaron Rosenberg, Janine K. Spendlove, Bryan Young, and many more.

Silence in the library has a long standing tradition of well-run Kickstarters producing high quality books. I hope you'll check it out and if you like what you see, please consider backing it.

Another Kickstarter opportunity

Hello my wonderful Kickstarter backers. As you know, I'm so thrilled with all the amazing support you showed in backing Hollow World.  Well, I'm back with another Kickstarter. This one for the next Royce and Hadrian Riyria adventure!

Unlike the Hollow World Kickstarter (which was used to fund cover design, editing, and other book production costs), I'll be covering those those costs myself.  What I am doing  instead is to fund a print-run for a bunch of hardcover copies. This will, hopefully, allow me to get the books in the bookstores and libraries.  If for some reason the Kickstarter doesn't fund, the book will still come out, it'll simply be in ebook and trade paperback only.

Here is the back of the book marketing blurb to let you know what the book is about:

Three times they tried to kill her. Then they hired a professional. She hired Riyria.

When the last member of the oldest noble family in Avryn is targeted for assassination, Riyria is hired to foil the plot. Three years have passed since the war-weary mercenary Hadrian and the cynical ex-assassin Royce joined forces to start their thieves-for-hire enterprise. Things have gone well enough until this odd assignment to prevent a murder. Now they must venture into a forgotten corner of southern Avryn—a place whose history predates the First Empire. As usual, challenges abound as they try to anticipate the moves of an unknown assassin before it’s too late. But that's not their only problem. The Countess of Dulgath hides a dark secret she's determined to keep hidden. Then there's the little matter of Riyria's new employer...the Nyphron Church.

If you've only read my Hollow World story, no worries. You don't need to have any prior experience with Riyria to enjoy this book to it's fullest. It's written in such a way as to be a great starting spot, so great for new or veteran fans.

I hope you'll consider backing this, I'm very excited to be doing yet another Kickstarter. You guys made the first one so much fun, I just had to do it again!

Just wanted to let people know about the Blackguards Kickstarter

Hey all,

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know about a Kickstarter that you may be interested in. It's called Blackguards, and it's an anthology of thieves, assassins, mercenaries, and rogues.

I have a Riyria short story in this anthology and the line up is quite impressive:

  •  CAROL BERG, "Seeds"
  •  RICHARD LEE BYERS, "Troll Trouble"
  •  DAVID DALGLISH, "Take You Home"
  •  JAMES ENGE, "Thieves at the Gate"
  •  JOHN GWYNNE, "Better to Live than to Die"
  •  LIAN HEARN, "His Kikuta Hands"
  • SNORRI KRISTJANSSON, "A Kingdom and a Horse"
  •  JOSEPH LALLO, "Seeking the Shadow"
  •  MARK LAWRENCE, "The Secret"
  •  TIM MARQUITZ, "A Taste of Agony"
  •  PETER ORULLIAN, "A Length of Cherrywood"
  •  CAT RAMBO, "The Subtler Art"
  •  LAURA RESNICK, "Friendship"
  •  MARK SMYLIE, "Manhunt"
  •  KENNY SOWARD, "Jancy's Justice"
  •  SHAWN SPEAKMAN, "The White Rose Thief"
  •  JON SPRUNK, "Sun and Steel"
  •  ANTON STROUT, "Scream"
  •  MICHAEL J. SULLIVAN, "Professional Integrity"
  • DJANGO WEXLER, "First Kill"
  • ANTHONY RYAN, "The Lord Collector" (novella)
  • PAUL S. KEMP, "A Better Man"
  • JEAN RABE, "Rashida"

It's already fully funded and hit a number of stretch goals including:

  • Adding three authors: Anthony Ryan, Paul S. Kemp, & Jean Rabe
  • Illustrations for each story
  • Additional per word rate for the authors
  • Open submissions for new authors to be included
  • A poster of the cover
  • T-shirt availability
  • Blood coin upgrade

It's put out by Ragnarok Publishing which does a really nice job and has experience rolling out a prior successful Kickstarter. So if you are interested in stories of men and women who walk on the wrong side of the law, check it out.

Wrap up and some giveaways

Robin and I spent the morning going through all the various backers and checking the messages. There are only a few (I think 4) who we are waiting to hear from regarding additional shipping instructions.  Please check your messages on Kickstarter to see if you are one of them.  All books other than those few have been shipped (although some still show that they are In Transit. If you have questions or concerns about your book, let me know and I'll email you the tracking number).

There still are some posters that need to be either shipped or reshipped because of damage or additional money sent for extra posters or overseas shipping. Robin and I have a trip to New York for some business stuff for me, so she'll be going through those on Monday when we return.

A few other things:

  • I had some extra copies of the signed &  numbered limited edition hard covers, and I'm holding two giveaways for people to receive them (a total of 4 will be given away). Even if you are a Hollow World Kickstarter backer, you can participate in these giveaways. The books will be shipped in time for holiday gift giving if you would like to give Hollow World to a friend or family member. Here are the links to enter and you can even enter both if you like: Goodreads Giveaway | My Parallel Giveaway. There are far fewer entrants in my giveaway so your chances of winning are much better ;-).  Also please spread the word about the giveaways to people you know who might like the book.
  • Tachyon Publications and I are working hard on preparing for the official release of the book for the general public. Originally this was supposed to occur in January, but they couldn't make that deadline, so on April 15 the print, ebook, and audio version will be available to everyone.  I'm really hopeful that it will be a big success, especially given the great feedback I've received from people in the Kickstarter.
  • Speaking of the general release, if you have read the book it would mean a great deal to me if you could post a review Amazon (Here is a link). It doesn't have to be long or involved just a few sentences is fine, it's really about the "number" of reviews more than anything else. The most important thing is that it is honest. Don't inflate your rating or your comments, and feel free to leave a critical review and ranking if that's how you really feel. In many ways, a book with mixed reviews will be looked upon more positively by potential readers because a review with all glowing reviews doesn't look realistic.
  • If you know people who you think might be interested in the book, please let them know that there is a FREE extended preview that they can get from Amazon, ibookstore, and Kobo.  It has the first four chapters and after reading those they should be able to determine if the book is right for them.  I can't get Barnes and Noble to make the extended preview free for nook, and it may be a small price outside the US, but please don't have them buy it.  Just tell them to send me an email ( and I'll mail them a copy in the format of their choice.
  • I still plan on doing a Kickstarter primer that other people can use when planning their own Kickstarter. I'm going to start working on it in December and I'll post here when it is done. This will be available for free to anyone (those who were in the Kickstarter or others).
  • Also I'm doing a write up on "a guide to professional editing" that will give writers some pointers on where to find good editors, what to do when hiring them, and will go through the professional edits that occurred for Hollow World. My intention is this should help authors in their own editing and also give those that are interested a little "behind the scenes peek" at what went on during the editing of this book. Like the Kickstarter primer it will also be given away for free as an aid to writers both aspiring and published.  I don't have a release date for that yet, but I will let people know.

I think that's it.  It's been a lot longer process than I had anticipated but I learned a lot and if I do one in the future, I'll do a lot of things differently and more efficiently.  Once again I want to thank everyone for the amazing support of this project. You made it possible and I hope that it will be a beacon for other writers.  I've already heard from some who are doing their own Kickstarter based on how this one came out. I hope you feel like your support was well rewarded and if any of you need anything in the future - please drop me a line.

My sincerest and heart-felt thanks
