Welcome to the SciARTI's first Kickstarter Project, Isosceles/46...

A PHOTO FRAME that allows you to swap your 4x6 inch photos instantly, without the hassle of fiddly clips and snips, supported by a quality and highly functional zinc alloy frame.  The age old photo frame is now completely remastered.

Landscape to Portrait

Isosceles/46 transitions between Landscape and Portrait format with ease.  Slide the Zinc Alloy stand to one end of the display panel and tip it on the side to get Portrait.  Simples!

Working Prototype

We have a working production prototype in hand that is being tested for design tweaks and small variations.

The production prototype allows us to understand intimately the challenges of manufacturing Isosceles/46, therefore any design modifications at this stage are minute and do no impact the overall manufacturing method.

Design Story

My first project as a Year 1 Industrial Design student (18 years ago!) was to design a photo frame.  No biggie right, but still challenging to push the boundaries and create something new, something different.  My submitted design back then was well received, but has since always sat in my mind begging to be sold as a retail product.

18 years, really?? Why now?

I recently came across a quote by the late great Barry Sheen.  He said -

“Don’t wait for your ship to come in, swim out and meet the bloody thing”.

So, with your help Kickstarters, I’m going to swim out and meet the bloody thing!

Customer Experience

How do I want people to perceive Isosceles/46?  Creating and defining the customer experience had a profound effect on every aspect of the project.  I didn't realise it at the start, but these values influenced design, manufacturing, packaging, costings and the Kickstarter rewards levels.

Ultimately, I wanted my customers to see Isosceles/46 as:

  • Simple
  • Easy to Use
  • Beautiful
  • Quality

With constant reference to these values, the design evolved quickly, which influenced the manufacturing method, which in turn affected project costings.  In fact, every challenge and hurdle of the project was refined, enhanced and resolved by these values, resulting in a well made, easy to use, beautiful, quality and competitively priced photo frame.

Design Refinement

There are two elements to Isosceles/46.  The Frame Stand and the Display Panel.

Frame Stand

The design I submitted at University (Version 1 below) looks a bit different to the version that is now retail ready.

Version 1
Version 1
Version 2
Version 2

Version 2 is almost unrecognisable from Version 1.  Customer experience values guided the design; Version 1 went through 12 variations to reach Version 2.  However, key functional elements between them have been retained; namely the 8 deg lean angle in both landscape and portrait format, important for aesthetic and physical balance.

The frame stand is made from Zinc Alloy because of its:

  • Quality
  • Weight
  • Dimensional stability

The manufacturing process of zinc alloy forced Version 1 to go on a crash diet.  With Version 1 starting out at a portly 936 grams, Version 2 weighed in at a lean mean 164 grams.  Savings were immediately realised on tooling, material and shipping costs.

Display Panel

Version 1’s solution for the display panel wasn't resolved for retail purposes.  Referencing my Customer Experience values, the Version 2 display panel gained a:

  • Photo border
  • A slot for inserting/removing photos quickly
  • Effective means to be supported by the frame stand

I chose silicon rubber for the border that provides:

  • Good friction with the zinc alloy frame stand
  • An easy manufacturing method
  • An easy assembly of the product in production
  • Low cost tooling options
  • Moulding ability of a slot for inserting and removing photos

Future Plans

Upon successful funding of Isosceles/46, I intend to expand the range of photo frames to include

  • Isosceles/57 - 5 x 7" photo size
  • Isosceles/68 - 6 x 8" photo size
  • Isosceles/81 - 8 x 10" photo size

Thanks for reading/viewing.  All photo frames will be delivered in time for Christmas, so get all your Christmas shopping done in one go and pick up a few Isosceles/46 photos frames for your friends and family!

Big thanks to:

Georgina Dias Thomas - My amazingly beautiful wife for giving me a kick up the backside to stop talking and start doing!

and finally...

YOU GUYS, Kickstarter Backers!! - Without you, Isosceles 46 would probably still be sitting in my mind, not swimming anywhere.  Thanks for providing your support and belief!!

Risks and challenges

Working with a prototype from production tooling enables us to understand where the weak points exist in the design transition from 3D computer modelling to real life tooling. To ensure these design upgrades are managed effectively in production, Peter & Brendan at Production Partners understand the manufacturing process intimately and can pin point where the changes need to occur and how to implement them.

We are also running against the clock in terms of getting the project successfully funded, tooling made, production completed and delivered in time for Christmas. We are aiming on getting production finished by mid to late November with logistics taking over immediately for delivery in early December. We understand some backers will receive large quantities of Isosceles/46 and will make sure ALL BACKERS get their deliveries with time to spare for Christmas.

All the timings on tooling and production are worst case, so if we miss any of these deadlines, we'll update the project page accordingly to set expectations.
